  • @kwrecks I think people that are public figures do have a responsibility to at the very least not be hateful in their speeches/interviews.

Maybe it doesn't affect me directly, but I'm not gay. I'm not a person of color. I am Muslim, so those comments just made me roll me eyes because he said there's no Jesus in Islam. And well, Jesus does exist in Islam, so that just proves he doesn't know what he's saying.

People sometimes see celebrities as representatives for the culture. If I were a southerner, I'd be pissed he was portraying the ignorant redneck stereotype. If I was gay, I would be bothered by him telling me I was going to hell and sinning by simply existing. If I was black, I would be angry that he thinks my life would be better if I didn't have equal rights.

As an American, I certainly don't want this old moron representing our culture.

As a follow up to the whole Phil Robertson thing....I will never understand why everyone thrives on words said by "celebrities".  Good, bad, whatever.  Someone famous says something and it sends everyone in an uproar.  Does it change your daily life? probably not.  You don't like what they said? Don't listen to them.  You don't know them, so it shouldn't be a big deal.  You can't change everyone in the world.  I agree what Phil Robertson said is wrong, and he should realize that being in the public eye, he can't say things like that and not see some sort of repercussions from it, but it doesn't change how I live my life.  Also, there was that whole thing with that mom that posted the "what's your excuse?" thing.  It caused this huge issue from people.  Who cares if she thinks that she's better because she's skinny with kids?  I know my daughter is taken care of, I know that I'm not at my best weight, but her words aren't going to affect me.  People should focus more on what is going on in front of them, and stop paying attention to what the media is saying, and I think everyone would be much happier.

I am with you on the celebrity thing. However if something makes the news and it reflects on an issue that I feel is important, I'm going to talk about it. I'm not in an uproar and it doesn't impact my daily life, but it's something to talk about that I have opinions on. Plus, aside from diapers, an adorable baby and dirty dishes, my daily life doesn't have a lot going on.

  • @LJUTCMommy, I agree that they do have a responsibility because they "represent" the culture and whatever.  And I agree, he shouldn't have said those things and I definitely lost my respect for him.  I have plenty of gay people in my family, including my MIL, and I think what he said is gross and ridiculous.

What I am saying, is that I hate how much energy people put into celebrities. I don't know how to word what exactly I mean.

  • @janneann1127 don't go to Disney around Christmas. I'll be there. All most always wear Disney. And may have a matching outfit with JT on ;). No shame :P
  • @CourtJack (and to everyone else) I'm definitely not saying that I think it's dumb to talk about. I think it is fine to be discussed. I'm more meaning the people on my facebook that have been arguing all morning about it.  It's become more of a fight defending the person, instead of a fight defending the issue. Does that make sense? I feel like I may have come across wrong in my rant up there.

My point is, I just think that people in general put too much energy and spend too much of their time idolizing celebrities.

I hadn't heard about the Phil Robertson thing...aside from his asshat comments...am I the only one wondering why he had an interview with GQ in the first place?

I  knew what he said but I did not realize it till this thread that it was in a GQ magazine.  I am seriously trying to wrap my brain about why he would be somone that would appeal to their target market.

Like someone said on my facebook, freedom of speech is cool and all but not when you use it to spread hate.  You can totally disagree with something (I am not saying I feel the same as him because I DO NOT) but just keep it to yourself.  Of course this does not apply to this board at all

Haha, of course you can have it! We have like 300 boxes in our cupboard that we've been given. H is slowly making his way through them. This is totally how I pictured you being mad at my UO:

So while we are on the topic of celebrities, I could not believe the news coverage in California of Paul walkers death. It's tragic yes and I'm sorry for his family but he had more coverage than Nelson Mandela's death. It was fucking ridiculous.

I'm sure this will rile a few people:
I am suspicious of women who I meet who say, "I don't have any close female friends. All my really close friends are male." Don't get me wrong I have a lot of close friends of both genders, but my female friends I can relate to in a way I can't relate to a man. And if you claim it is because women are always jealous of you... you may need to do a little self examination - In my experience, women who claim this usually have their own issues. I know there are some mean bitches out there, but there are plenty of amazing women on this planet. Meet them. They are better friends then the men who just want to do you.

I'm one of those women who get along better with males. I'll admit that I hate the "competition" aspect that I've always experienced with my female friends. I have two girl friends that I've known since I was 3, but we RARELY talk. Maybe once every couple of months. I love connecting with them, but I always feel a little judged because I'm not a girly girl like them. I'm definitely a guy's girl. I just feel more comfortable around them. I do of course, sometimes, wish I had a least one really close girl friend, but I married my husband because he's my best friend and I can tell him anything. I think you're right though, where some of those women you speak of have serious attention issues and just want guys to be all over them. That's just trouble.

ETA: For the record... I moved 3 hours away from my friends, so that's why we rarely see each other or talk, not because I don't like women :P. That and the baby takes up all of my time, and I'm totally okay with that :)

If it makes you feel any better I LOATHE anything mint. It grosses me the eff out. I can tell if DH has had any even after eating other things when I kiss him. Blahhh. Grossss.

I also hate mint. It actually makes my life that much more difficult. I have to bring my own bubblegum flavoured toothpaste everywhere. Whenever someone offers gum it is always mint and I have to turn it down. Restaurants always give mints with the bill. Last night my hubby got me the candy cane flavoured hot chocolate from Timmies instead of the gingerbread and I almost cried.

We went to Olive Garden last night and they always give out Andies candies. SO GROSS! I always have some Trident tropical whatever gum (I'm drawing a blank) with me, just in case people offer me something else :D. Also, DH LOVES to tell the story about how he got peppermint stick ice cream when we first started dating and I almost cried (he swears I did cry. Liar!). Ughhh. So awful.

    I'm glad I'm in good company :)

Please call Christmas, Christmas ... I hate the term X-Mas. It doesn't even make sense!
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xmas -  I read a really interesting article (that I can't find for the life of me now) about how the X comes from the Greek translation of Christ.I had always been irritated by X-mas too, but this article gave me another perspective. I hate Wikipedia, but it was the best simple explanation I could find.

Is that how Christina Aguilera went from that to Xtina? I never understood that name change.

  • I'm a total perfume snob.  I can pick out who's wearing the likes of Alien, Flowerbomb or Viva La Juicy in a crowd & just feel sorry for the gal who's succumbed to the perfume wall at Sephora.  Booooring.  Give me a Montale, Amouage, or Kilian any day.

This is a good perspective, and I suppose now it does make sense. But I still don't like it. It's Christmas, there is no reason we need to abbreviate it. This might stem from my disdain for the letter "X". It's just NMS.
Agreed. I also am still not a fan, and will never use it myself - I just don't get all ragey when I see it anymore.

I don't even know those words. I feel super lame.
  • I don't think the fact that someone is family gives them any entitlement to being in someone's life.

I agree with you. I also don't think that if I keep someone out of LO's life I am doing him a disservice. If they are not in my life for a good reason I think it is fair to keep them out of his life.

You need to earn the title of family member.

  • I hate when people type "squeeeee" on online forums and Facebook. It weirds me out. I just imagine grown women running around shrieking the word.

  • I'm all for women's rights but seriously were still underpaid and at least in most families I know still have to do the cooking cleaning shopping taking care of the kids and work 40+ hours! So maybe they should of pushed harder for men doing more home-work rather than just adding to the list of responsibilities for women

way to insult 98% of the board.  Yes, there are some very over played perfumes, but are you really bashing every single scent they carry?  Plus many women simply do not have access to the more rarefied companies.

I hope you get nothing but bath & body works gift cards for christmas and get stuck in an elevator with a bunch of teenagers and strippers wearing Love Spell.

    Whoa, someone struck a nerve!
