No.... Someone just made an asinine comment. Call me cray cray, but I bet most of the board would consider what sephora carries to be luxury. But YouTube is sorry for all of us? Well no thanks, I don't need your pity. I feel bad for anyone who was suckered into buying a Mercedes because an astin is far superior. Srsly? GTFO.
Thanks, @henderson1026 - I certainly can't afford any fancy perfume... and I consider fancy just about any perfume. I have a bottle of essential oil lavender that I dab on for date night. Other than that, I pretty much smell like horses, babies, old leather and dirt - and my DH thinks I smell awesome.

I appreciate you standing up to someone who is just being an elitist twat. :D

(edited because of type "oil" to old. No idea how I screwed that up.)
you might have a very sexy fragrance on your hands - not joking, I have seen some fragrances with stranger notes.

  • I don't think the fact that someone is family gives them any entitlement to being in someone's life.

My love for you just grew. I just said this to my Aunt because she insists my parents can be good grandparents despite their complete failing as parents. Uh, no. They will NOT be in the boys' lives. Period.

  • I am just about as Christian Left as one can get but think this hubbub over Phil Robertson's comment is fucking stupid. He's not discriminated or been hateful in my eyes. He expressed an opinion that was unpopular himself...and I think the Robertson family should take their high rating show to another network. A&E are a bunch of pussies thinking they're moral pillars when they capitalize off the mentally ill on Hoarders or addicted on Intervention. I apologize if this has already been hashed over. I never look at other UO's before I respond + I'm coming into this a day late.
he hasn't been hateful? are you stupid? saying blacks were happier when they worked in the fields and how could you be gay and prefer an anus over a vagina.  maybe your not stupid and just as racist and homophobic as he is.  seriously!?

Im not going to touch the comments about african americans with a 30 foot poll, but i dont think he was hatefull saying he didnt understand why a man would prefer an ass hole to a vagina. Hes an older straight male. He doesnt understand the appeal. He probably shouldnt have said it, but he did.

And that makes it right? I'm a straight woman to the CORE. However, does it give me the right to say I don't understand why a woman would prefer another vagina? Nope. Why? Because it's not my preference. Why discuss it at all? Yea, the freedom of speech is a powerful right but out of respect
For other feeling/opinions certain thing shouldn't be said. Especially by a "Hollywood star". It was homophobic, period.

IDGAF. Anyone who truly believes he didn't *say anything offensive* I have ZERO respect for you. Also, be prepared to get the shit flamed out of you because this mentality is disgusting.

I never said i agree with what he said, or that he was right in saying it. I know it was offensive. And i think the network was in the right to fire him.

Chatty, had he just said "I don't agree with homosexuality, but it's not my place to judge" then ok, I could agree that it wasn't that bad. HOWEVER, me thinks you need to read the article before commenting. Comparing being gay to bestiality wasn't even the worst of it.
Ok I just read the article, and I didn't see anything that I haven't heard from many many religious people. He doesn't compare gay to bestiality, he encompasses it along with those who sleep around, drink too much, steal, etc, as being sinful, which is what the Bible says. And to be fair, he's known apparently for being blatantly honest in everything he does, and the reporter asked him?
"What, in your mind, is sinful?

“Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there. Bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman and that woman and those men,” he says. Then he paraphrases Corinthians: “Don’t be deceived. Neither the adulterers, the idolaters, the male prostitutes, the homosexual offenders, the greedy, the drunkards, the slanderers, the swindlers—they won’t inherit the kingdom of God. Don’t deceive yourself. It’s not right.”

As a woman whose slept around I don't feel compared to bestiality, although all sin is considered equal. So in MY mind, someone who is gay shouldn't feel compared to bestiality either.  And for this comment,

“It seems like, to me, a vagina—as a man—would be more desirable than a man’s anus. That’s just me. I’m just thinking: There’s more there! She’s got more to offer. I mean, come on, dudes! You know what I’m saying? But hey, sin: It’s not logical, my man. It’s just not logical.”

Well as a woman a penis is way more desirable than a vagina or an anus, and like he said, thats just me. Its not a reflection on anyone else, nor should his opinion be.

But I'm just now reading about this because I generally don't concern myself with celebrities and have never even seen Duck Dynasty, so if I missed something in the GQ article please let me know.

He actually said "“I never, with my eyes, saw the mistreatment of any black person. Not once. Where we lived was all farmers. The blacks worked for the farmers. I hoed cotton with them. I’m with the blacks, because we’re white trash. We’re going across the field.... They’re singing and happy. I never heard one of them, one black person, say, ‘I tell you what: These doggone white people’—not a word!... Pre-entitlement, pre-welfare, you say: Were they happy? They were godly; they were happy; no one was singing the blues.”

and could that not be true of his experience, his perspective? What about this exact statement is racist? Is it all that surprising that the workers weren't complaining in front of the people who paid them?

  • @LAMuehlan -  WTF is with the justification of "straight older man".  Please explain this b.c 1) being gay wasn't invented 20 years ago, there have been homosexuals for as long as there have been homosapiens.  2)  men don't stop being gay when they hit "manopause".

    Wow.

I'm saying that quote above mine that I included in my post was exactly what I read. That's what I saw in links I read last night and what DH read to me when we were getting ready to to out yesterday. I am also a fan of the show because I like the family. Maybe it's because I liked the family already I feel this way, but yes. That's what I based my opinion.

Have you watched it? He has a black grandchild. I still don't think that's what he was getting at based on what I read.
What does having a black grandchild have to do with anything. Clearly, you should finish reading the remarks regarding *the blacks*. He feels we were happier during the Jim Crow era.
But, saying those things are acceptable because people "like the family". Oh, and A&E are "pussies" for firing him right? That's what you said.

He has a Black Grandchild, so he can't be racist?

That makes no sense. It's like when racist people say they're not racist because they have a black friend. It's called tokenism and it's not right.

Additionally, there is a really ugly movement in the ultra-conservative fundamentalist community where adopting a child who is non-white is "saving them" and the darker they are the more "rewards God will give you." Old church ladies are adopting children from China and claiming they're saving them from "the heathens". And, if they're black, they're "saving them from themselves". It's really messed up.

I'm not saying that's what the Dynasty people are doing, but given Grandpa's views, you never know.

Better for him to look like the douche and not them because that's exactly what he is.

I don't see how HIS view that the people HE worked with were happy is racist.

Sheltered maybe, but not said in hate.

  • If I say, "Asians are good at math," maybe it's not hateful, but it IS racist and ignorant.

The fact that he thinks they were happy because they acted happy in front of him at work...well... he doesn't really have a right to talk about how black people feel/felt.

And if you act angry and upset at work most of the time, you're probably not going to have a job very long.

Thinking that black people were better off before they could dine in the same restaurants, attend the same schools, vote in elections, etc. makes me think he's racist.

I agree with people being surprised that this is his stance and beliefs. If you watch the show and/or know anything about the family - they're incredibly religious and have a history of being outspoken about their beliefs (well, Phil does, anyways). While I think those beliefs are
absolute and total bullshit and 100% wrong and completely offensive - it definitely is anything but surprising to me that he holds them. Many Christians feel this way, and again, while I think it's utter b/s - it doesn't surprise me.

The flipside to this, is A&E's perspective. I mean, come on - if a network broadcasts a show documenting red neck bible thumping hunters - you gotta think they've done their research and know exactly what they stand for. So, it's ok to broadcast their show knowing what they believe in.....until they say it out loud? That's basically what I get out of this.

As I stated earlier, I think they made the right choice---saying things that offend a completely innocent population of people is wrong. But I also don't think the network deserves to be shown as a hero of equal rights, either. I'd bet they knew who Phil was going into this whole business and now they have to cover their own a$$es.

tl;dr - network made the right choice, but probably not for the right reasons.

    edit: quote fail. sorry

If you say Asians are good at math, that's a stereotype, not racism.

I know not everyone agrees, but I am of the mind that stereotyping and racism go hand-in-hand. Professor Google arguing my side:

Yes, stereotyping is a form of racism

    .

When you assume that a person engages in specific activities, eats certain foods, and speaks a particular fashion simply due to that person's skin color, that is racist behavior. Automatically labeling a person just because the individual comes from another country or possesses a certain skin color is completely racist and unfair.

    Stereotyping can be considered racism

Although stereotyping is seen as "grouping" a certain trait, habit or behavior with a certain class of people, it can be considered a form of racism. Racism is a narrow-minded opinion of another person or group of people. Racist people often pay strict attention to other races or genders and deem them inferior to their own. Stereotyping follows the same type of "attention grouping" of other races or genders to be classified or considered as lesser or greater.

Professor Google arguing @Haunted Radio's Side:

    Stereotyping is not inherently racist

People stereotype because what is referred to as a "stereotype" happens so often as to validate the assumption. The simple undeniable fact is that different groups of people most certainly do behave in definable ways. To simply acknowledge this is not to denigrate anyone. In fact, many groups actually take pride in what is often thought of as stereotypes about them.

    Stereotypes =/= racism

Stereotypes are things you witness with your own eyes (and probably some amount first hand accounts) and are generalizations based on observable facts. A stereotype or generalization based on factual evidence is not a dogmatic belief that one race is superior or inferior. Making a generalization does not mean you intrinsically hate another race for no reason other than the color of their skin. It is not racist to notice variations in the way different types of people are. It IS racist to hate another race for no other reason than the color of their skin.
