Also, when did we start hating on Pottery Barn and Williams-Sonoma? I must have missed that. If loving PB, W-S, and Crate & Barrel is wrong, I don't want to be right.
Just bought DD a sleeping bag from PB for christmas.

    Best mom ever. I know.

Oooh which one -  I am thinking of getting the sherpa one but haven't seen it in person and having trouble pressing buy since its so expensive for a sleeping bag!

Holljade cause I really want to know which one you got and how you like it!
I got this one in snow leopard:  https://www.potterybarnkids.com/products/fur-sleeping-bag/?pkey=e|sleeping%2Bbag|18|best|0|1|24||3&group=1&sku=1901057&cm_src=PRODUCTSEARCH||NoFacet-_-NoFacet-_-Bottom_Marketing_Rule|Top_Marketing_Rule-_-

I like it, its big and soft and comes with a pillow already inside! DD is OBSESSED with blankets and things that are soft. I am excited to see her fact when she gets this!

Ugh of course it's on sale now!

    Oh, I have another!

I don't think kids under the age of 12/13 should have their own tablet. Be able to play on one sure, but one that is theirs, can't do anything without it. Not necessary. I didn't even have a cell phone until I was 16.

I thought the same thing but I just bought DD a leap pad for Christmas. We travel a lot so it will become very useful during the times we are in the car for hours at a time.

I don't consider that a tablet. Lol. I mean like getting kindle fires, iPads, etc. My cousins who are 9, 7 and 4 all got new iPads for Christmas. They are actually theirs and can be played with whenever their homework and chores are done. I'm 25 and don't have an iPad.

My 2 year old has his own ipad.  Flame away.  It's nice that I don't have to worry about getting into my apps and deleting my email. His is all locked-down, kid friendly apps with a big rubber cover to prevent breaking.  I just gave him my old when I upgraded.

Disclaimer, my husband works for the company, so it's hard not to trip over an apple device in our house.

ETA:  DS was playing a spelling/puzzle game this morning, and got really excited when he successfully spelled the word pig and ran around the house saying "P - I - G, pig!".  So I don't consider it a waste at all.

DS inherited his "own" tablet after he shattered DH's screen.

I love massages because they hurt. After, I feel like a million bucks! Pedicures, I'm so-so. I don't find them relaxing. My feet are very ticklish.

  • Add me to the toddlers and preschoolers don't need their OWN tablet. Using a family one? Sure. Buying my 2 year old a kindle, ipad, ipod touch, other tablet? No freaking way. I think it's ridiculous and I don't care how UO it is.

If your toddler is using your device so much you miss it, I think your toddler is just using the device too much. Again, probably super UO.

I'm not sure when I'd buy them their own device - upper elementary maybe? I think I'll know if & when it's time. Then again there are no tablets in the house and that's not changing any time soon (purely b/c we don't need one).
Agreed. And, as adults, we like our tablets and laptops...but we don't really share or use them when DD is awake. We have 2-3 kid apps on our phones / iPad and those are really just used for travel. There are just so many other ways to learn / cool toys to play with at the toddler / preschooler age. There will be plenty of time for technology addiction later in life.
See this kind of thinking baffles me. It's not all or nothing. Just because a kid is playing with a tablet it doesn't mean they are addicted nor does it mean they aren't playing or learning from other cool toys. I think technology absolutely can have a very beneficial place in a child's life.
  • I hate when people call their children stinkers or anything gross like that. That is not cute.

I already call my kid a stinker. And a jerk. And annoying. And trouble. And loved. And precious. And funny. So much personality in this little fetus!
I seriously have so many weird names for my son. Most of which aren't even real words. Kind of a random assortment of consonants and vowels that make him laugh. His nickname is Bug though- and I think it's freaking adorable.

  • I'll say, too, that my daughter is supervised with our iPads and will be with her kindle. It won't just be like loose in her you box. She also knows there are rules and she has to be careful with it.
Yea at the rate my son is going, he'll be lucky to be given anything to be responsible with before he's old enough to buy it himself.

This. Both of our careers involve technology and as a result it's a big part of our lives.  It would be unreasonable to try to expect DS to not be interested.

And for FWIW -- my 2 year old knows not to throw around (or jump on!) his ipad.  Just like he knows he is not allowed to play with mama and papa's ipads. Or knock Christmas ornaments off the tree.  Or play with fragile things in the living room.  I think it's reasonable to expect an older child to understand that things need to be taken care of.  He also knows that there is no iPad at meal time and that he is only allowed to play with it certain times of the day.
Can we trade kids for a while? Cause mine sure as hell knows those things are unacceptable behavior...yet he's a defiant little shit and does them anyway cause he thinks it's fun. He has been told time and time again (and punished with time out!) not to play with my phone/DH's phone/the laptop/the remotes to the TV/mouse & keyboard to the TV/climb up on shit to get things way back on the counters/get in the dishwasher and pull shit out/etc...but rather than put it down gently when reminded not to touch it, he runs with it and throws it on the floor. He also jumps on and stomps all over his other electronic toys, even though he's been taught not to do that either. He gives zero fucks. I'm at a breaking point with him now cause I just don't know what to do anymore. This is why my child cannot be trusted with anything of value. It's awesome that you have such a well mannered, well behaved 2 year old that comprehends rules and boundaries, but some of us still have little heathens that refuse to listen. I want what you have.

I didn't have a cell phone until I was already in my 20s...and that's because when I was 16, pagers were the go-to method of outside-the-home communication. Hell, the internet in the home was still a fairly new endeavor (and you really only had AOL as a choice) when I was in high school.

    Holy shit I'm old.

YES @Jennypenny1014 143!!! LOL, cell phones were massive machines that had battery packs that you had to carry with them when I was in high school. My dad totally had one of those.

Lol- my first one came in a bag. I had a pager and thought i was awesome.

  • My mom wouldn't let me get a pager. She always thought it was a drug dealer thing. hehe. (Which oddly reminds me of my high school sweetheart, which then reminds me how LUCKY I am not to have married him. LOL. NOT a good match.)

My dad still calls me Stink. We all had weird nicknames, and I guess my foul diapers inspired him when I was a baby. I'm not disappointing him with my pregnancy farts either. Hahaha

  • Sometimes it's just easier. They obviously don't need it. I spent 80 dollars on a kindle fire and it can get kindle free time for it, which has great parental controls as well as unlimited content including videos, books, and apps. Plus I don't have to worry about her messing up my stuff or having a fit when I have to take it to leave for work.

  • To be clear my comments weren't anti-technology at all. They were strictly referring to buying toddler or preschool their OWN device.

I think it's kind of silly to say "oh, we have tech jobs, it's unavoidable." I just don't see what that has to do w/ buying a kid their own device. We have plenty of technology and they do have some access to it. I have kid apps, DD1 can get on the laptop and go to certain sites. All totally fine. I just can't figure how how the heck a 2 or 4 year old needs their own thing.

To be clear here too my kids don't have their own devices. They will one day but not now. I am also of the mindset that if they get an iPad for Christmas what the hell will they want next year? I do however let the, play on our devices whenever. The have free access to them and literally use them max an hour a week. More if we are traveling.

  • Ha. Yeah. Good luck with that. My kid has like six of them a day from everything over putting the iPad away to buckling her car seat. I feel ok about avoiding the ones I can.

  • No. I gave a list of several reasons I got her a kindle, of which that was one. The main one is that it's my preference that she has something of her own instead of using mine, again for several reasons.

This.  Just because my child has an ipad doesn't mean he doesn't play with 800 other things.  Most of his ipad use is in our bed on saturday or sunday morning for 30 minutes with mama and papa (weekend snugglefest!).  On weekdays he is allowed to watch TV or play with his ipad (not at the same time) while he drinks his smoothie and we get dressed for work (30 minutes).  He is screen free at school, and not allowed screen time in the evenings on "school nights".  On weekends he has access to it all day if we are home, but usually we are playing outside on bikes or drawing, or playing with play-dough or obsessing over trains, or doing puzzles.  Usually he opts for it when he wakes up from his nap for 30 minutes.

Moderation is never a bad skill to teach early.
Coming back to this late as I've been away all day...

Didn't mean to imply that every kid who uses a tablet is addicted to technology.  Nor did I say it's all or nothing.  NOR did I say kids who play with tablets don't play with other things. D-A-M-N.

I said at such a young age (my DD is 22 months -- I'm pretty sure y'all's kids are older, yes?), OUR FAMILY doesn't see the benefit of using apps and such on a regular basis.  There are tons of great apps that are fun and educational, but I can't really think of a skill or lesson an app can teach that can't be taught another way without the screen time. At this point, I'd rather stick to the latter -- I anticipate that will change in the future, especially since our ISD starts tablets in kindergarten.

And, uh, this all is not to say screen time is outlawed in our house -- DD loooooves her some Daniel Tiger and Curious George.

  • Yeah, not getting my 2 yo an iPad when I don't even have one myself. We both like to play with DH's, though (really, she just likes to watch What Does the Fox Say 5x in a row). I can teach her self control, respecting others' belongings, limits, and everything else without her having her own technology.
