    I have a food one (what's new, eh?) - I hate doughnuts.

Also, I hate pedicures. I don't want my feet touched by ANYONE!

But.... All donuts? They're so delicious! That makes me sad!

I'm with you on the pedicures though.

  • This is more of a FFFC but it's all I've got. We regifted a gift card to a very nice restaurant to our daycare provider as a Christmas gift. I don't want to use it until I can drink wine again, and we've had it for years. I'm going to get her some flowers too but I feel like a cheapskate!

  • I LOVE our Elf. Suzy brings great joy to my children.
yep same here. People way over think the elf. And please tell me how and elf is creepier than a fat man coming down your chimney, a man sized bunny, or a fairy who steals your dead teeth.

I think they're all weird and we'll be doing doing none of them.

WORD, Maelic! We'll do "the tooth fairy" but won't pretend it's not us making the swap.

Did you not grow up doing any of them? At least none is consistent, I guess. Not that the elf is necessary, I just don't get the elf hate.

I grew up in Italy. Santa's a clearly fictional character in the Christmas mythos but not an important one, the Easter bunny isn't a thing, and the tooth fairy was always my parents giving me some change in the middle of the night.

And the elf on the shelf is, as far as I can tell, a recent American thing that costs 30 bucks and stalks your kids for the month of December.

The elf has actually been around a long time, it just grew in popularity in the last 5 years or so. Question will you tell your kids that others do believe as to not ruin it for kids that do?

That's a good question. We'll handle it pretty much like we'll handle religion, ie: other families believe in things we don't, be respectful of their beliefs. If someone flat out asks our kid if they believe in Santa (or Jesus for that matter), I would fully support our kid saying no.

  • I hate the Santa charade. And the Easter bunny. And the tooth fairy. If it were up to me we would do none of them. But everyone else got my kids all pumped up for Santa so we're doing it. I've decided I just won't lie when they ask, regardless of what age that is. My 3 y/o and I had a candid discussion about weddings and marriage after he saw me watching a wedding video the other day and I'm pretty sure he understands marriage equality better than half of Kentucky now.

And I don't like the elf on the shelf. It does creep me out. But I think we're going to do it next year because I think my kids would really enjoy it and that's what matters.

  • At first I agreed with the "no weight discussions" on A14 but yesterday I was told by my Doc I'm gaining way too fast. I have all kinds of anxiety about it and now I feel like I have no one to talk about it with.
I think it's more of the OMG I gained this much and how much have the rest of you gained threads that are making us coocoo.  Please post about what your doctor mentioned especially if it gives you anxiety.

One apt in my pregnancy with K, my doc told me to watch my weight because I had gained 6-8 lbs in two week or something like that and it completely took me off guard and made me cry and question and analyze my weight.  What really helped was being told that babies (even in the belly) all gain weight differently so your babies are probably going through a bit of a growth spurt in there.   Please try not to worry too much (easier said than done I know) until your next apt and then you can see what doc says then.

  • I am sure we will do Elf on the Shelf, even though he wouldn't be my first choice (at all) in "traditions." I do think it's obnoxious that many moms I know go completely overboard with it ... Their elves bake midnight cookies, have TP fights in the house, etc. JUST MOVE THE DAMN THING AROUND! Why are you making more work for yourself? And stop taking photos of it every day and posting them on FB - THATS obnoxious. Also, the elf was introduced in 2005. I guess it grates that now we're all either forced to enjoy this "Christmas tradition" or we're Scrooges for not participating, while the enterprising creator laughs all the way to the bank. I realize new traditions get created all the time, but I can't think of one that so many people do that was 100% created as a money maker (as opposed to Santa who has been a cultural icon for centuries in many different cultures that many people have more recently capitalized on). TL:DR... Elf annoys the heck out of me but I'm a sucker for making my kid smile, so I'll move the little fucker around in a year or so.

This particular brand has been around since 2005 but I had a friend that did it when we were kids and her elf was really creepy looking.

I don't like maternity photos either. I mean, 10 years from now do you want nice pictures of your pregnant self framed on the walls (do people do this? That's odd to me), or pictures of your child as a baby? Baby pictures hold up. Belly pictures do not.

But the book is what popularized it. It has not been a "widespread American tradition" until the last decade or sooner. My grandmother has two elves (very similar looking to "the" Elf) that are over 50 years old - I asked her about them, and, at least around here, they used to come in poinsettias with some little message about elf magic. She doesn't recall anyone ever moving them around, and I don't know anyone who did that growing up.

ETA: obviously not saying NO ONE did this but your friend is the first person I've ever heard of who did before the book.

@Ooopsbaby14 my mother let me help set up Christmas, Santa stuff for my siblings, on Christmas eve in my late teens. It was a lot if fun and some good bonding time for my parents and I.
    Edit spelling.

  • @KendraColeslaw years ago they played "how the edge stole Chirstmas" here in Dallas. The singer (forgive me I suck at names) broke his ankle on stage and still finished the set with gusto and enthusiasm. They have had my respect ever since.

My UO to piggy back off of the maternity photos - I don't understand people that have big photos of themselves up in their house. I mean, family photos, sure (though I'm not into the staged JC Penny family photos either). A small photo of your wedding that you really like? OK, I guess. But I know some people that have BIG professional photos of themselves alone or with their SO and it just seems super strange to me. I don't want to stare at a huge photo of myself in my house.

For our wedding one of our friends who is an artist painted one of the photos I posted on Facebook of DH and me. I think it's really beautiful and cool looking (it's black and white with some hints of dark blue), but I hate having it on display! It makes me feel like a creep staring at my face in my living room. DH loves it so much I can't make him take it down.
My hubs really wants me to paint one of our wedding photos as zombies... I can't bring myself to do it for this reason.
  • oo I thought of an UO I HATE chobani yogurt! Don't get my wrong, I LOVE Greek yogurt its tangy and savory and delicious. But it should not be mixed with fruit or granola just yuck! I prefer to eat it plain, on its own or with a spicy Pakistani/Indian/Mediterranean dish
