Mucus Plug Question... A Bit TMI

A bit of a TMI post but I'm trying to figure something out... So although I'm dilated to a 2, I've never noticed any loss of a mucus plug... Well I just went to the bathroom and when I pulled my underwear down to go there was part of my mucus plug and it was blood tinged... I'm kind of confused on the whole thing because you'd think I would have started losing it or lost it completely since I'm already dilated to a 2? You'd think with this being baby number 5 I'd know more but nope lol

No, actually, I wouldn't think that because being dilated to a 2 means just about as much when you're pregnant as your actual due date means. Sure, you could be near labor, but you could also have another 6-7 weeks to go.

Being a FTM, I asked my OB about it and yes, it was super uncomfortable..but I rather ask her than a bunch of ladies here. She told me the more dilated you are, the chances of it coming out..but just like the your amniotic fluids, it is constantly going to be replaced because it's purpose is to protect the womb from germs. That is all I know about the plug and I hope I helped answer your question?

  • Yes there have been a lot of mucus plug posts, but I like to help where I can:) so @AshleyDoll I would say yes it's entirely possible to be a two and just now losing it. I lost mine in the in the pre L/D area at my hospital with DS dilated to a 3 1/2. Even then they said I had to be at a 4 to keep me. Hope that helps!
  • I'm not asking if labor is near and yes, I used the search feature before I posted, didn't answer my question.

What I'm trying to find out I guess the way I asked it was kind of confusing... I'm trying to figure out why I would just now be possibly losing it as opposed to when I started dilating days ago. You would think that when you first started dilating it would come out, not wait until you're 2cm dilated and then start. Just confused on how it's possible for the thing to stay in when you're already dilating. It just seems a little ass backwards to me. I'm not completely f*cking stupid, I used the search bar before hand, I'm not asking if labor is starting, I've already had it confirmed that I'm in the early stages of labor but it is stalled at this point. I've never lost my mucus plug this dilated in my past pregnancies... My past pregnancies I lost it when I started thinning and dilating and at 1cm, not 2. Does that make sense AT ALL? And I'm sorry but I have been here for a few years now and really don't care about what people don't like others posting about... If I have a question, I don't care if someone else doesn't like it, I'm not asking it for them, I'm asking for me. If I have a question about contractions, you bet your ass I will post it. Especially if searching the board AND google isn't answering my question.

And thanks to those who answered... It answered my question completely. :) I didn't know about it growing back or that you could lose it at 3 1/2cm.

Edited to finish what I was saying...

  • @ashleydoll. if your doc told you that you are in your early stages of labor than that goes with out saying that loosing ur mucus plug goes hand in hand. It can regenerate. You can be dilated. Not be dilated. You can be 5 cm dilated and not loose it. Every pregnancy and every women is different. It is a question to ask ur doc bc you will get 12 million answers here and none of it will really help
  • I will humor you and provide you my experience from my daughter's birth.

I never saw my mucous plug. I was checked at an appointment the morning I went into labor & was not dilated at all.

12 hours later, I was 6 cm when I arrived at the hospital & still, no mucous plug - that I am aware of.

So, I think it is perfectly normal for the plug to fall out any where from no dilation to never seeing it.

In all honesty, to answer your question, my guess as a FTM is because it is MUCUS it stretches and sticks to your cervix. Ever have that super stubborn snot bomb that refused to come out of your nose? I doubt it matters if you're 2 cm dilated or not, which is nothing.

That said. We're not doctors. If you can't find your answer on Google, you can't find it using the search function, do you really think a bunch of random internet women are going to have the answer? And if you have been around for years, you know how posts like this will be met. Ask away, but don't expect anybody to take you seriously unless you've got a real problem.
Oh I knew how a post like this would be met and that's the thing, I don't give a crap. And yeah I thought that maybe SOME would know something because not all of the  people on this board are FTMs, SOME of the people on this board have given an answer... So out of all the of the women in the due date club, yes I thought someone would have an answer. If I didn't think someone would have an answer, I wouldn't have asked. And WOW LOOKY HERE, my question was answered!!!!!!!!!! AMAZING!

Well, shit, if all you were looking for was a "Sure, it's possible to lose your mucus plug at 2cm," why didn't you just call your doctor?

Whoa...burn..I'm a STM and I lost my mucous plug at 0 cm dilated and 29 weeks and I would've told you the same thing these ladies have told you...you can lose it whenever, half the time people don't even realize they've lost it or they lose it in the middle of labor. Just because you don't like the answers you've received doesn't mean you have to be snarky.

That's why I said if you're a FTM and don't know, I'm not asking you. Just because I don't know one thing doesn't mean I don't know anything. But I didn't know I had to clarify that if you don't know an answer, don't say anything because it's pointless. This is the most immature and stupid post on this thread. Mmmmkkkk? Also, reading involves figuring out what the author implies. And you definitely implied that FTMs don't know crap.

We're not the ones who have had 4 kids and were unaware (until today) that you could lose your mucus plug at 2cm.

  • I'll bite.

I lost my MP with #1 when I was 3cm and NEVER lost my MP with #2 or #3 (I guess until I was in active labor? IDK.)

Anyway, I dilate really early too.  With #2, I was 4cm by 34 weeks and 6cm dilated at 37 weeks and it was still in there somewhere. I was induced at 39w.  And with #3 I was 5cm dilated at 37w and same thing.  Never lost it.

@ashleydoll. It's one thing to be snarky it's another thing to act the way you are. Did you seriously say we are stupid? Immature? And illiterate? You have the mentality of a high school girl....who the eff name calls???? I did know the answer to your question and even though it was snarky i still answered you and didn't "spew stupidity". You on the other hand are spewing a hell of a lot more than stupidity.

Hmmm I wonder why I don't know.... Maybe it's because like I said, I've always lost it when I first started thinning and dilating.... I haven't lost it days and days after.

  • Been waiting for someone crazy to bring out some drama on our board. I'm a FTM and I know the answer to this. But the search function could answer your question as well as Google. I suggest if you don't want to get flamed you don't ask questions that have been asked before and learn to use the search function.

Um, you are 2 cms, you are just first starting to thin and dilate.
