I think my whole irritation with the teacher conversation isn't the pay thing, it's the people who act like they know. I would NEVER claim to know that I know what it's like to do another job, other than the ones I've done. I wouldn't presume to say how much someone should be paid or if they should complain about how many days they have off because I DONT KNOW. So that's when I say FUCK THAT SHIT. I'll complain about going back to school on July 4th if I want. 8-X Also...my friend runs a daycare and she loves it. I could never do it, but she would never take my teaching job. Different strokes.
You know who REALLY doesn't get paid enough relative to the work they do? Day care providers. My aunt was the lead teacher in a day care classroom and made $11 an hour. Fuuuuuck that.
Can you imagine taking care of 4 nap ninjas at once?
That sounds like the worst form of torture. Or four teething babies at once?
The infant room currently has two teething babies, one 10 month old whose mother only brings him oyster crackers and two bottles for the day, so he's always hangry, an 11 month old who is just never happy and constantly cries and a 20lb 3 month old who is as happy as can be. A few of those babies, including my own, sleep for maybe an hour all day total.
You could not pay me enough to be in that room.
Why won't the mom of the 10 month old bring him enough to eat??? Sad!
I don't know. The DC workers feed him more when they have extras. She works close and nurses him twice a day, but he's been on a nursing strike, so hasn't had as much. She isn't from the US and doesn't speak English well. She does say in her country babies don't eat food till they are one.
Holy crow guys, there is a difference between working in an inner city school and working at a school like Sandy Hook. Yes, terrible things happened at both Sandy Hook, and at Columbine, but those are not daily occurrences. One of my friends taught in Brownsville, Brooklyn, where it WAS dangerous on a daily basis. To compare the two is simply ridiculous. Should we also start arguing about how much movie theater workers get paid in light of what happened in Aurora, Colorado?
And again, no one on this thread said that teachers get paid what they deserve; we simply said that the pay "isn't terrible", and that the constant martyrdom is irritating. As for complaining about going back to work, sure you CAN...just remember that you are annoying the shit out of those of us who didn't just have several weeks off (and if you are complaining about it, you obviously DID have said time off).

Um, nurses. I will start CPR and save your ass 3 minutes before your doctor arrives. I also will give your doctor suggestions about how to save your life before you actually go into cardiac arrest. Maybe I don't have all the schooling, but you are toast without me
My UO is Sophie is an overpriced dog toy... I mean seriously it is a rubber toy with a squeaker. We just got one for DD and she loves it but seriously it's a dog toy....

Honestly, I've said the same thing. I prob could have bought Oliver a rubber chicken and he'd have loved it the same.
You know what I'd like to know? How many figures @somerandomchick makes. I think you only manage to work it into a thread a least once a week...
Yes, snark. I'm missing chopped!

Loved my L&D nurse. Like want to kiss her. She is the reason I didn't have to have a c section when my doc said I doomed myself to have one. Not that they are bad, I am just terrified of giant huge needles going in my back. I want to send her a christmas gift but I feel like she wont remember me. She deserves all the money in the world though.

I hope so. Now to figure out what to send!

I dunno.. there are a lot of jobs that don't get paid appropriately, at least not based on importance to society. I'm not sure what goes into determining teachers' salary.. is it just based on how much income the state gets from taxpayers??.... @etoille? For some reason I just assume you know everything..
Often local property taxes go towards funding schools, which is why teachers in Bucks County (or Westchester or insert rich county here) get paid more than teachers in poorer towns/counties.
Oh, I forgot.. you know lots of fun facts too!
That seems like a bad set up.. It seems like poorer areas should have more funding and therefore (we hope) better education so that *maybe* the kids will be more likely to succeed??
I feel like I complete idiot saying that last thing because it sounds really duh.. but... really. It doesn't make sense!! I've never really thought of it in terms of tax dollars and lower income = lower tax = possibly lower quality education (not necessarily low-quality b/c of teachers.. but lack of resources in general). Merp.
Please excuse my ignorance.

Ummm yeah, there's a reason poverty is a cycle.
I'm kind of stoked you had this epiphany today! Life is not fair, at all. Yes well to do people work hard for what they have but where you come from very much factors into where you end up in life.
Unless you are little orphan Annie.
It's amazing what a difference there is between my fancy suburban high school (in one of the best districts in the state) and my husband's high school in a little mill town an hour away.
If I hadn't been born to middle-class engineers I probably wouldn't have ended up being a software engineer who (altogether, counting bonuses and stocks etc) probably made 6 figures this year at 24.
Even just having a mom who can tell me from experience that no you are not going to spend the next 40 years doing the terrible shit you're learning in Algorithms & Logic (ughhh proofs :-S )... I came close to joining the engineering attrition group and switching to a PoliSci major.
Oh yeah, I love aha! moments. I knew some schools/districts were "better" than others but I never really made the tax dollar connection.
Also, pass along some of your "got-my-shit-together", will ya? I so should have a degree and a well paying job by now. :'( Maybe if I didn't change my major 138471 times... >:(
@mermomo5 I actually kind of like members only jackets. Maybe I should save that for tomorrows FFFC. My grandfather still rocks them. Wish we were the same size because I'd totally gank them.

Gank! Bwahahahahahaha! I haven't heard that since high school.
The hipster queer scene in SF (and in Portland too but not as much) is basically full of members only jackets. It's a big thing. You're really just super fashionable!

Ummmm, no!
I used to work day care. I was a teacher in the 1 year old room. 26 toddlers, the majority of whom refused to nap. 26 diapers 11tymillion times a day. 26 crying babies. 26 needy parents. And I made $9/hour with no benefits. I loved those kids but I had to get out of daycare before I swore off having kids of my own.

JFC, it may just be that I'm grumpy as hell today, but I'm over this already.
