Re: UO

  • You know who REALLY doesn't get paid enough relative to the work they do? Day care providers. My aunt was the lead teacher in a day care classroom and made $11 an hour. Fuuuuuck that.

I love you for this! I've got my four year teaching degree in early childhood and seven years of experience and make $11/ hr too! I love all my daycare kiddos like they are my own, snuggle them, play with them, and are their second mommy all day. I sometimes complain about my pay because let's face it it sucks but I love what I do!

Yikes,my dh is a union worker...
I understand this is a UO. I worked as a union healthcare worker and it was frustrating working with people that were incompetent but were kept due to union protection. In my job there was no incentives to achieve more because you were bound to the union salary increases based on time served not excellent performance.

Nope in dh 's line of work if you mess up you are out union rep or not. However they are handling million dollar transformers and supplying electricity to several states it maybe different..I have a deep love for the union and my medical benefits are top notch, being a diabetic and all I went through with brain injury we would have been broke.

I have great health insurance too. I don't work for a union now. In NYC in 2005 I made $18.00/hr as a union dietitian with a masters degree. My masters did not matter to my salary.
I made $20.00/hr as a make up artist. My wage as a union employee was barely livable in NYC. I move to a lower cost of living area (MD) to a non-union job and get a 20,000 pay increase. I was able to negotiate my salary based on multiple levels of experience and education.
I don't think there is a reason to have unions with the labor laws that exist today. It's no longer the days of Upton Sinclair and "The Jungle".
Ask Detroit, MI or Pontiac, MI or Flint, MI or Toledo, OH how the unions worked out. You'll trip over a bunch of crackheads and junkies with no jobs to try and find your answer.
