Why even chance it? I think it's incredibly ignorant and selfish to drink while pregnant, no matter how much. I'm pretty sure there hasn't been a study conducted on pregnant women to conclude whether it's safe to drink during pregnancy.
Who the actual fuck are you?

Honestly, I think you go with whatever your midwife/OB recommends. Personally, I have been sniffing the open bottle like it's my job--and that's about it. I'm a better-safe-than-sorry kinda woman, so I'm just going to wait until spring. But I do know plenty of women who feel comfortable with a very small glass on special occasions.

Yeah, guys! What about super high infant mortality rate in countries where women continue to drink a glass of wine through pregnancy! Or their through the roof FAS rates!!!! Oh, wait...
DH tells me I "huff the smell of wine like spray paint". Zero self control over here so I'm doing without. But if I could keep it to just one glass I'd be all over it! (And probably all over the floor since it's been so long!)

They can't do a good study where they can control all variables and see what the safe alcohol level is. It's unethical.
They can look at data and extrapolate things from that, but maybe the mothers they look at did drugs and drank so what really caused problems with the pregnancy?
We have many choices to make as mothers. And everyone is going to have different oppinions on what is best.
Have you had tuna? Lunch meats? You arnt supposed to eat a lot of tuna because of mercury, does that mean you should abstain completely because a risk is a risk? If you eat a sandwich from a reputable place are you irresponsible for taking the risk of listeria? Are you a bad mother?
Should you get shit faced drunk while pregnant? No. You shouldn't really do that anyways. But a small amount here and there is not reason to declare a woman an unfit mother.
Tons of European women keep on drinking with no adverse effect. Our mothers probably drank when they had us (if we're old enough). My mom told me that the no drinking idea was just coming around when she had my older brother.
That being said, my crazy acid reflux and heartburn do not allow for wine. Last pregnancy I had a sip at Christmas and spent the rest of the night battling fire coming up my throat so it's not worth it to me.

My mom did the wine a week routine..Crazy hipsters. Good thing I still turned out 110% awesome.

"I'm pretty sure"
You seem to have based your incredibly narrow-minded view on a PLETHORA of research and information. Please, tell me more oh wise one! Share your wisdom with the masses!
Narrow-minded? Nah. Has nothing to do with that. It has to do with the fact that alcohol is known to cause many birth defects but who really knows how much alcohol was consumed during those pregnancies. Have you ever worked with a child with FAS? I'm assuming not. I, on the other hand, have. These children wouldn't have had to deal physical, behavioral, and/or numerous learning disabilities if their OPEN-MINDED mothers would have passed on the alcohol.

Jeez, who peed in your Cheerios this morning?
You did!! Came in here with a whole mess of pee in all of our Cheerios!!
Kindly go gather "facts" from the interweb and let us be.

Umm? Do you want my real first and last name or...? I'll pass on relinquishing that information. However, I'll extend a "hello".
Was something I stated that offensive that you needed to be so vulgar?
Vegetables have not been proven safe. I'm sticking to Doritos.
Yeah, that makes sense, because vegetables have been linked to known birth defects and life-long health problems. You make a seriously valid point. Thanks for sharing your "knowledge" and shedding some light on such a serious topic.

Considering most listeria cases actually come from contaminated vegetables...

Just out of curiosity? Have you met a majority of the parents of the children you worked with that had FAS? I have met a few. At the risk of over-generalizing, most of them had substance abuse problems and weren't the type of women who just casually had a half a glass every couple of weeks at a nice dinner.
I, too, have met a few on more than one occasion. I can't be certain of their drinking habits, but my point is, why chance it? I mean, is it really that difficult to give up wine for 9 months if it means that your child's risk for disabilities is significantly reduced. I don't think I'm a terrible person for disagreeing with people who think it's absolutely fine. I'm not going to try to defend my opinion, nor should I have to. OP wanted to know our thoughts, and I offered mine up. Don't like it, too bad.

Actually a lot of the mass produced vegetation in America is also processed in close vicinity to mass production animal farms causing it to be contaminated quite frequently. @AcaAwkward and I watch the same documentaries.

Oh and I assume you are breastfeeding for a full year since it's best for the baby and that you will never touch alcohol while you are breastfeeding. So its really 21 months. Just sayin'.
See, the real trick is to start your drink as you start nursing. Then you look like a super awesome mom!
I had that trick down pat. I was paranoid at first and got those test strips but it took a lot more than I drank to make those test strips positive.
One of my best friends had her son 3 weeks before DD was born. We used to send each other selfies of ourselves drinking a nice glass of red while nursing. NURSING LADY BOOZIN' IT! It seriously never got old.

You know what else is super fucking ignorant? Calling others selfish and ignorant themselves because they make choices that aren't in line with yours. OP may have asked you for your opinion on drinking, which as you stated you answered, but nobody asked you what you thought about people who did.
Moving along to your next terrible point-you are indeed narrow-minded. You state your opinion as fact, but word it as 'I'm pretty sure' which tells me you've done little to no research whatsoever on the matter. Are you a doctor? A research methodologist? An expert on alcohol consumption? I'm assuming not. Neither am I, in fact. This is why I turn to scientific research, medical papers and the like in order to form MY opinions, instead of forming a blanket one based on nothing and then putting others down who don't see things the way I do.
Lastly, working with a child with FAS does not make you an expert on the effects of alcohol consumption whilst pregnant, just as my brother having a mental illness does not make me an expert on Psychiatry. The 'links' that you speak of regarding alcohol and FAS have been documented in cases where women consumed 5 OR MORE *consecutive* drinks in one sitting, and even in those cases, most of the women had children without FAS.
Unless you can show me irrefutable documented cases where small (read: occasional) amounts of alcohol have a proven CAUSAL effect of FAS, kindly gather your facts before you come here spewing your uppity bullshit.
You can trust me, I work with Doctors so I pretty much am one by your standards.
BAM!!!!! You just got served.

Dollface, your "knowledge" has no more scientific studies backing it than mine. Like I've had to throw out here twice already, the studies to back up either claim can't happen in our country or most countries of advanced medicine because of the ethics involved in exposing subjects who are unwilling to consent. Your point is moot.

Re: Wine?

Or, um, because beer and wine in small quantities on occasion pose a lot less risk to a fetus than a bad bag of lettuce.
(Maybe Rando McGee has a bagged lettuce problem?)
