I'm not really a fan of the whole premise of using Santa to blackmail your kids to be good. I know everyone doesn't use elf on a shelf like that, though. The actual elf is just creepy looking. If we do anything as my daughter gets older it will be elf magic, which I think is much cuter and I like the message better.
Mama to a little girl born July 2011 and a little boy born April 2014!
I think it's kinda creepy in a sense. As a kid I was always kinda got creeped out by the Easter bunny lol. I still think the elf can be used for good, though.

Is that what people use it for? I just thought it was a fun way to give your kids an exciting Christmas countdown in a creative and interactive way :-??

I need fideo =P~ I've been thinking about my grandma's cooking for days. She makes both Mexican dishes AND traditional Thanksgiving dishes. I'm sooooo excited for that now that I'm thinking about it!

I thought the same. Like...its a surprise each day to find out where the elf is! Of course, I've heard people say "the elf is watching to make sure you're being good"...but, I don't consider that blackmail. Santa is watching all the time and knows anyways!

We are starting a new tradition this year. I got a red velvet Santa bag, and on Christmas eve I will have DS put some number of toys (thinking 2 now - he doesn't have a ton of toys) that are still in good condition in the bag. That way Santa can pick them up when he delivers presents, take them back to the elves, fix them up and give them to children in need who aren't able to get presents from both Santa and parents. If he does that, Santa will leave him an extra special present. Goal is to tie giving with receiving, as opposed to a naughty and nice list.
I love that, @poru!
@mrscrcalli We don't have one so take what I say with a grain of salt, but I think part of the schtick in the story is that the elf is "reporting back to Santa". I'm sure a lot of people don't do that part.

My in-laws are having their first traditional thanksgiving at my house this year. They are bringing some traditional Mexican dishes. Should make for an interesting meal! I just hope I can make a delicious turkey and sides!
Mom to 10 year old DS and 7 year old DD. Twin girls coming soon!
I want to kill both of my dogs right now. One of them chewed a hole in our brand new rug that we bought two nights ago. I seriously feel like crying right now.
I'm trying to make a cheesecake!! The re'cipe says to cook my crust and "Wrap bottom and sides of springform with 2 layers of foil" WHAT DOES THIS MEAN!! Do I wrap the outside of the pan? The inside? The crust? I DONT KNOW!! (
It's telling you to wrap the bottom and sides of your pan with 2 layers of foil on the outside, so when you put it in a water bath, the water doesnt get between the cracks of the pan and sog your cheesecake.
Haha! I gave up not farting around DH a couple weeks ago. He apparently didn't notice until tonight. He was like, "Woah, was that a fart? I'm IMPRESSED!"

I've been farting around DH for years, we call them barking spiders. This is a typical conversation in our house:
I fart
DS - What was that?
Me - What was that?
DS - Barking Spider! (dissolves in giggles)
DH - That was a good one!

Soooooo we pre ordered our turkey.. There were no prices when we did.. Who know turkey's with no chemicals were so GD expensive! Wtf?!
Hahaha @Mrscrcalli I remember the first time I switched to heirloom turkey after becoming a food snob locavore. That price looks about right!
I've hosted Thanksgiving for eight years, and have spent more than a week's worth of groceries on one day. Totally worth it, but I'm soooo happy my newlywed little sister is hosting this year!

I hate going to other boards. No one interacts with me on any boards. I have gone to 3 different places and I get zero love. I'm exclusively seeing A14 and nothing else.
DH's truck just slid alllllll the way down the driveway. Lol. We only have about 4 inches so far... Maybe next time your wife says 'babe, you look like you need some tires' you listen to her.. since she's the car person in your family. Sigh. Oh DH.. I parked it in the side yard, figure the grass will be more sturdy? Lol. Just don't want a totaled 4Runner in the street in the morning!

DH won't let me say barking spiders, cuz he's terrified of spiders. The farting started at work lol. I used a LOT of scented lotion at my desk today....

April 14 August Siggy Challenge- "This time last year.."
FINALLY caught up from the good ole 1K days...which was...yesterday.
Two things:
1. DD & DS felt their baby sister move for the first time today!!!! Both of them laughed and told her to stop hitting. Lol. I've got a second set of parents on call, apparently. :-D
2. Our elf, Clancy, doesn't report to Santa. He reports to us from Jesus. Clancy does do some fun(ny) things, but his main job is to remind the kids (and us) about those less fortunate. One day, he'll leave a pic of a dog or cat. The kids figure out that we're supposed to buy stuff for the local shelter and go walk as many dogs as possible. Another day, he'll be sitting reading a book, and the kids know he wants us to donate books. Things like that. We don't own the elf book. Our elf came from my mom right when they came out, and DH and I came up with our own story. In the same vein, Santa in this house is explained via religion too. So for those of you who are religious/spiritual, there are other ways to use the elf. DD has already asked who we think we'll be helping this year.

I've never heard of barking spiders. We blame farts on the dog.
