Wow, I didn't realize what a horrible mother I am/will be as I sit here thinking I'll enjoy a few sips of my favorite wine over the next six months, especially as I daily pop my -GASP!- baby aspirin, prescribed by my doctor for my clotting disorder so I don't have yet another miscarriage! Guess I'll go lock myself in a bubble til June...

This is ridiculous! It all just seems like a few people calling others alcholics & child abusers & the rest a bunch of people trying to justify their stupid decision or guilty pleasure!
Not exactly - it's pretty much one person actively giving her very specific opinion on drinking (and, let's be honest, taking it all a bit out of context... ie one half glass of wine every so often is NOT alcoholism), and everyone else trying to explain why she's over reacting.

Why are you having a child if you hate them so much? Wouldn't it be eaiser to just run some kids over in your car? Esp. since you're clearly an alcoholic who probably drives drunk all the time.
Anyone who reads this thread needs wine. Fact. I'm pretty sure being a huge twat waffle has a much more negative effect on your fetus than a few oz of wine.

Agreed... all this post has made me want to do is pour myself a big glass of wine. And I have maybe 2-3 glasses of wine in an entire year. But all this talk of "wine, wine, wine" - it's like Ron Burgundy going all "scotchy scotch scotch" - the power of suggestion!

This. I'm not opposed to small amounts of drinking while pregnant, even though I likely won't partake myself. But going to the extreme of saying CPS should be called and crying over people "poisoning" their kids is such an unfounded overreaction that it's comical.

And "literally crying." That was the best part. Her rising stress hormone levels actively effecting her unborn baby as she weeps uncontrollably over the damage someone will do to their child by having a 1/4 glass of pinot noir with their Thanksgiving meal.
No, but I'm not a big wine drinker. I've had sips *gasp, yes in 1st tri!* of DH's beer a couple of times. That's what I've done before and what I'm comfortable with.
1) Yes, there are studies, lots of studies. Lot's of legitimate large scale, decades long studies published in reputable medical journals across the world. Where do you think your doctor got the "an occasional glass is ok" from? A unicorn did not whisper it in their ear. They read the research.
2) I also read the research and made the informed decision based on scientific evidence that an occasional glass of wine will not harm my child. My doctor also came to the same conclusion. I had one the other night. It was lovely.

I drank 1 glass of wine during my pregnancies with my girls. It's not some I necessarily plan for, but I also don't feel guilty if I do choose to enjoy a glass of wine.
I'm with @BrightEyes112. Although I do like the taste of wine and beer, generally when I drink on the weekends with friends it is to acquire a buzz. Also, I am definitely a lightweight and would be slightly buzzed off of one beer/wine. This is why I will not be drinking at all during pregnancy.
If alabamawhatever thinks I have a problem because I like the occasional buzz-on, I don't care. Thanks
As I said, there was a marijuana thread a few weeks ago, LITERALLY the same story, not enough evidence, etc etc, but no one says "yeah lets blaze up some drugs while preggo!". Not a single person.
Here we have a somewhat similar situation, with one KEY difference, while still not that many studies exist, it is known beyond a shadow of a doubt that alcohol causes FAS, as well as many other KNOWN problems.
Two situations, both unknown, one can be proven to cause problems, one cannot. But since Alcohol is SO engrained into today's society, MOTHERS are willing to put the lives of their children on the line just to get A BUZZ???
Let me say that again: the only positive thing you are getting from the drug known as alcohol, IS A HIGH. A recreational HIGH. How on Earth can that EVER be worth risking your BABY?!?!
1. I'm late, and I agree with PPs--you're a bad person (not for this quote, for the one where you said that people who drink 1/2 a glass of wine deserve and/or don't care about miscarriages, etc.)
2. NO ONE SAYS "LET'S BLAZE UP SOME DRUGS" while pregnant or not. Please stop. (I just really wanted someone to call her out on that one.)
"And all the house elves came to help, and THAT was the day Voldemort was defeated!"
Well crap, the best night of sleep I got when C was a newborn was a night I had a glass of wine and she got hungry early. Didn't even occur to me the next morning as to why she slept so well...and it still could have just been that she had a good night because she was at the point of being on the verge of sleeping through the night!
Drinking a 1/2 glass, or heck, even a whole glass, here and there, not going to kill a baby. My mother was PRESCRIBED a Guinness a day when pregnant with all four of her children because she needed more iron. Except for the part where I'm ok drinking in moderation while pregnant, I turned out ok!
Just have to get this out--this thread has completely made my afternoon.
I've been so miserable with MS that even though DH has offered the occasional sip of wine from his glass, I haven't been tempted. BUT when that finalyl wears off (hopefully soon!), I have no problem with the occasional drink. Besides, with twins, whatever I consume will be divided by two, right? I mean, that's just common sense...
I know they say that it's OK once in a while, some even say a glass a day. But I have an aunt who did drink a glass of red here and there with her son and first he was a preemie and now he has all kinds of physical issues. There's nothing that directly links all that to the wine, BUT it's hard not to think that way when everything else with the pregnancy was somewhat normal. I will not be having any alcohol at all until baby is around and I'm done breastfeeding....it's not worth the risk.

I've been fascinated with this topic ever since it started. I found a few interesting articles - even one from an economist, who had some interesting graphs about how kids who had a mother who had the occasional drink even ended up with IQ scores a few points higher than those who abstained from alcohol totally.
"Hey if this one spontaneously aborts or comes out fucked up who cares! We'll just get drunk and forget about it. No big deal."
Comes out fucked up?!? Sorry I missed this earlier but as someone who works with children with disabilities and their families this is SO OFFENSIVE
I obstain from alcohol while pregnant but to call a child fucked up who has disabilities is pretty dreadful.
No one here is going to give their kid FAS or FASD from 1/2 glass of wine.
And maybe you should take some time to be a little more empathetic towards persons who struggle with real addiction in the face of pregnancy and half to deal with a life time of guilt if tragically their child does suffer the effects.
FASD is not an issue of someone who doesn't care about their child. It's a dynamic and complex problem that touches on addiction, education, health, socio-economic struggles, and/or mental health. Please read more than your google headlines and do real research
Also if you want to change people's opinions I promise you'll do more with an empathic and compassionate approach. I've never really been inclined to be like " hmmm that person just made a bunch of assumptions about me, called me names & lectured me in a condescending tone!... I will totally listen to them"......
I really encourage you to do what's best for your child, your pregnancy but please don't throw such harsh accusations towards people. And please please try to be more compassionate when talking about those who live with disabilities. I promise you they don't want to be referred to as "fucked up"

I might need a couple sips of champagne to get through the holidays with my mother in law.... X_X
WORD. I'm sitting beside my husband listening to his mother loudly spew through the phone like the rage of Pompeii. I'll be staying with this belligerence in a few days.

Agreed. Being a twat waffle could pose serious health risks equal to if not more severe than the occasional sip of wine. Can someone call a scientist?

Who makes statements like that? Seriously when you have no clue what you are talking about don't make blanket statements.
lol when I checked this thread earlier it was downright funalicious. Now there's 119 new comments and someone thinks a glass a wine = lifelong alcoholic? That'll teach me to clean my house for an afternoon.

What??? There are lots of reasons a baby can end up a preemie. And being a preemie is more likely the reason for his issues than her drinking a few glasses of wine.
I have had exactly one sip of alcohol in my entire life. My son was 14 weeks early and has lots of physical issues. Your reasoning = invalid, FutureMrsW9
Wow! This thread is great. I missed all the fun. I think alabamapink ran away. We flagged her a few pages back for interpreting drinking wine to causing a miscarriage. Definatley not cool in a thread full of loss ladies that probably never touched wine and still lost their babies. She's not worth our thoughts anymore.
I'm so sorry if anyone else was hurt by that comment. And all you ladies taking baby aspirin for the well being of your pregnancy, she obviously has not been as unfortunate as ust o loss a baby and have to resort to baby aspirin or sticking a horse pill up her twat to increase the chances of success. Some comments are just off limits.

Yet another one dives off the deep end without taking a second to think (coming from a woman who doesn't drink).
EVERY yes response here was, "yes, occasionally, half a glass. I love the taste." Nobody went, "yeah man! I used to go the bar every night and get drunk off my ass! I've been counting down the days til my second tri to get mah drank on!"
no. These women are all very concerned with the well-being of their children and you crying for their kids and saying they shouldn't even have them is way over dramatic, naive and, frankly, disgusting.
They are all clearly being extremely cautious. My doctor even said it was okay if, after the first tri, I would like a glass every now and then (though, I don't drink, it's clearly something that gets asked by other cautious mothers since he just offered it up).
You really have no right to say things like that to women who are using their judgement, probably have gotten the go-ahead from their doctors and are probably excellent parents.
While all my fellow winos are here...when I was breastfeeding DD, I actually bought test strips that will test the alcohol in your breast milk. I mainly pumped but they were pretty awesome.

So you might be harming your kid by not drinking a bit here and there! :-)
And to answer the question, I will probably have small glasses at Christmas and New Years, and then on occasion in the 3rd tri. Nothing has ever tasted as good to me as red wine did while pregnant with my daughter.
oh, right - OP's question. I won't be drinking but I don't drink when not pregnant BECAUSE IT'S THE DEVIL'S KOOL AID. I kid, I kid; the devil's kool aid is probably pretty tasty. But for realz I won't be drinking.
