I think people traveling with children should be allowed to board (planes, trains, boats etc) first, or right after handicapped. I'm very surprised so many airlines are doing away with this. Makes me not want to travel.
eta. typo. cell phone keyboard yo

    having a child isn't a disability.

didn't say it was. but its to every passengers advantage if a child is content on a plane. If that means mom needs to board before the other passengers to make sure she can get the child comfortable, then so be it.

When parents wait until the last minute to board (for good reason) but then hit every passenger in the head with the carseat, take 20 mins to install it and throw off the whole plane because theres no room in the overhead bin by their seat for their luggage, that stinks for the other passengers.

eta: no trying to imply thats the norm, but I have seen it happen

  • I don't like Christmas. I can't stand Christmas music and I hate that it starts to be rolled out earlier every year in the stores. Soon we will start seeing Christmas decorations in July.

I like Christmas, but I like my Christmas in December not before! And for the record, I saw Christmas decorations out in July, can't remember which store it was.

Me too. I have successfully avoided Christmas decorations and all that for years, but now I kinda have to - for the kids.

The whole Christmas thing just bugs me - the fake happiness and the crappy music, all of it.

What  :-O I love Christmas! I am in no hurry to rush through fall but I love that Christmas stuff is starting to show up in stores. I feel like the excitement is already beginning.

  • Obviously a UO: I hate most kids on planes.  I hate the idea of having to take N on a plane next August and am still trying to persuade my DH to just drive to vacation instead of fly.  He will not give in.

Yes, That's directed at you Holly.

    1. don't hit people in the head with your damn carseat.
    2. learn how to install it in less than 20 minutes.
    3. don't bring luggage that can't fit under the seat in front of you.
I don't see pre-boarding as entitlement at all.  I see it as something to make the flight go smoother for all passengers.
and FTR, I don't hit people with my carseat, or take 20 mins to install and I prefer my bags under the seat in front of me.

I love Christmas. I'm not opposed to breaking out my Michael Buble Christmas cd....like today.
My CD is still in my car from last Christmas! I accidently played it the other day and had that moment of "Oh that's where it is!" I love Christmas just not in July. I've never flown with a toddler/baby so I'm not sure how I feel about early/last minute boarding. I can totally see both sides and I'm not sure how I would do it. Thankfully no flying for this chick anytime soon! I need to be more well versed in the ACA but you ladies have opened my eyes to both sides. Hashtags are ridiculously annoying and thankfully only a small handful of FB peeps you them. I'm annoyed by the "newlywed" couple (married over a year now) that always have "ILY" as their status along with stupid quotes and shit. We get it, you love each other now lets all move on! After all this my UO is: I'm not a fan of white sunglasses. I have no idea why but I think they look seriously stupid on anyone <-good one right? #ihadagoodoneandforgot

I totally agree. I think a lot of this depends on how successful they are in their respective field.  Our REA is very laid back and doesn't pressure us at all, which I assume is because he has enough business that he's not depending on us buying a house for his financial security.  And in turn his attitude is what would keep us coming back to him.

Meh, I do think that parents with small kids should have the option of pre boarding. Personally, I would not use it, but I know people who are incredibly anxious and it makes their life easier if they can have ALL THE THINGS done early. However, I agree on hating parents with entitlement issues. I just don't think this here is one.
I will admit it, I am this person. I usually pre-board. No one has ever given me a dirty look for it either. I don't really feel like it's a sense of self entitlement if I take advantage of it. We don't use a car seat, but I usually have my pump, his treats/a book/ etc. all kinds of stuff to arrange so I'd much rather get on the plane and have that done and him happy before everyone else boards. The thought of doing this last, with a plane full of eyes on me makes me break out into a sweat.

  • I strongly dislike shopping at most outlet malls/ stores. The deals aren't all that great and a lot of the stores make merchandise of lesser quality specifically for the outlet so they can sell it at a lesser price.
Take for example coach purses (oh yeah, I'm going there). I won't buy them at the outlet because they aren't the same quality of the full price coach store. Loft is the same way. I'd much rather wait for a big sale at the full price stores than shop at the outlet.
My one exception is gap outlet. I love that store.

I went to an Old Navy one a while ago and it was a hot mess. And the Columbia one I went to didn't have prices that were all that great. I just don't see the appeal.

I would be the happiest girl on Earth if we had outlet malls close to us. Closest is 3 hours away. As for the Coach thing. I have Coach bags from "normal" stores and I also have them from the outlet. I've had no issue with the quality from either. Both are identical to me.
I have another. No not sure if it's a FFFC or UO or something else but my coworker RSVP'd to B's party for 4 people, his wife, him and their 2 daughters. Come time for the party they are a no show. Ok no problem. Things come up whatever. So I get back to work he comes up with an excuse that wasn't even good and then says "but we have gift for him." Ok great fine. This was over 2 weeks ago. No gift. It's not about the gift but if you're going to tell me you have something then deliver, otherwise shut your face. We work together 5 days a week and see one another more than our spouses most of the time! This is also the coworker we bought a pull behind bike trailer from and after paying him and getting the trailer said he wanted more money for it. Umm....ok?

  • I love boarding planes early with DD because it's quiet. I can take my time to look for my seat, get our luggage up where we need it and get out the things I need for her taking off. People are packed on airplanes like canned sardines... it's nice to be able to get on the plane with my baby when it's calm, not when there are 150-200 people all in the line trying to get to their seats, etc. And I think it would be SUPER hard not to hit someone with your car seat by accident. You would literally have to carry it over your head. My car seat is enormous.

Eh, I feel like there can be legitimate issues that aren't entitlement based--I can imagine that, were I flying by myself with a toddler, I'd find maneuvering up the aisle with a carseat and kid in tow difficult.  I'd try to be careful, but in the hustle of everyone scrambling on (and very few people are happy to be on a plane to begin with, so aren't really helping one another out) it would be hard to avoid bumping into people.  I'd probably want early boarding not for myself, but to avoid inconveniencing anyone else.  I am TERRIFIED of flying with E, not because I'll be frazzled, but because I know kids on planes are annoying and I hate knowing I'll be bothering other people.

I feel like this is the airline's call--if they think it's easier to get parents with small kids on board first, they should do it.  If they feel it's a bigger inconvenience to have kids already on the plane when passengers are boarding, they should skip it.  If it comes out in the wash, so  be it.

  • I think all salaries within an organization or even an industry should be known to everyone in them.  I get not wanting your neighbor to know what you make, but your coworker that does the exact same job (possibly better) than her cube-mate should know if he/she is getting $20K less for the same or more work just because they didn't know the higher salary was an option.

Keeping salaries a secret within organizations only benefits management.  There have been plenty of studies on this and workplace happiness satisfaction and productivity goes up when its out in the open.
I agree. I would love to know how I rank compared to some of my colleagues. Especially when I know I can change companies and make more right off the bat.

  • I wish people were more on board (SWIDT?) with helping out those in their communities. I have no issues with having a social welfare safety net but IMO that doesn't exempt me from helping someone out. "I pay my taxes so I don't donate" irks me. See a need? Have the ability to help? Do so. Be a decent human being piggybacking off @nita2603.
I don't think this happens, though--I mean, I'm sure it does, but widespread, people tend to donate, too, at least in the US (I'm sure elsewhere, too, I just don't know as much about it).  Americans are actually really good about making charitable donations.  In fact, I remember that America as a nation got flack that the government donated less per capita than many other countries after the Asian tsunami years ago, but failed to take into account that American individuals donated far MORE per capita than any other country.

And I guess I do see a valid reason for not donating as much were my taxes to go up significantly--I'd have less money in my budget.  We budget for charitable giving--less take home pay = lower budget = government is deciding who to help and where that money goes, not me.  (UO: I think the government is inefficient and stinks at this, compared to many nonprofits.  I'd rather have lower taxes and higher personal giving to create an effective social safety net between govn't assistance and nonprofits filling in the gaps.  But I get why others disagree on that point.)

    Oh.
  • UO: I'm glad they didn't pass yet another rushed CR.

I think it's absolute bullshit that they pulled a shutdown, and I really wish both sides would stop acting like fucking toddlers.  But I also think it's incredibly stupid to just keep putting bandaids on our fiscal crisis in the country.

FTR: I'm not a fan at all of the way ACA has been implemented or a lot of facets of it. But I think the Republicans are stupid for playing chicken with people's paychecks just to prove a point. BUT I also don't see the Democrats budging at all either. (Not on the ACA stuff, but on all the other requests.)
It shouldn't have been a rushed CR. The fiscal year ends on Sept 30 every year. This should have been worked out months ago. The ACA was passed in 2010, not last week. They are holding hostage unrelated legislation in order to cause pain and force the issue. The ACA still went into effect on Tuesday, but now 800,000+ people are furloughed for what? A pissing contest by grown ass adults. Edit: Also, the president submits their budget to Congress in the Feb timeframe. That's right- Congress has been sitting on their hands and doing nothing with this budget since March 2013. I'm done now. This topic makes me stabby and feisty.
I totally agree! Budgets are worked on years in advance and approved by OMB. If Congress didn't like them they should have been working on a fix, not waiting until last minute. The only reason there should ever be a new CR is the first year of a new President's term. Even then, he should just work to change it for the following years, not the current year.
I am in Finance and the only people here right now are those closing the books for FY13. It is craziness.
