UO Thursday

Re: UO Thursday

  • I have already purchased Ds's winter coat. It is large and puffy. I will not put it on him for car rides, but we walk him to/from daycare each day, and therefore found it to be a necessary purchase. I've yet to figure out how I'm going to do the whole car thing. I guess just lots of layers/blankets?

Preheat the car. Put jacket on. Walk to car. Take Jacket off. Put in carseat. Give blanket.
I get that, obviously. I just mean you can't preheat your car all of the time like when you're running errands, etc.

I guess I need to resign to the fact that it's just going to take a lot longer to get in and out of the car for stuff.

  • Most financial advisors/car salesmen/real estate agents/people whose job is solely commission-based make me uncomfortable. High-pressure sales make me totally shut down for some reason. I'm probably in the wrong industry.
I used to make commission off of the insurance policies I sold and it was so awkward. I also hate high pressure sales, so I didn't, but that also meant I lost out on some revenue.

Don't even get me fucking started on agents selling people Humana plans. Preying on the elderly who don't know.
My agency didn't do health insurance - that is an area I could never sell for.

  • I think people traveling with children should be allowed to board (planes, trains, boats etc) first, or right after handicapped. I'm very surprised so many airlines are doing away with this. Makes me not want to travel. eta. typo. cell phone keyboard yo

Completely disagree. They should board last. Keeping a kid in a seat longer than necessary is not a situation I want to deal with EVER.

And we do that for most trips. However, at -40, I'll not take the jacket off at any point in time if we have to run errants and have multiple stops along the way.

We can preheat at home no problem - once I am out of the car at a store or something, that doesn't work any more. I will avoid the winter jacket if I can, but it is not always doable. And frankly, I am ok with that.

  • I live in Canada and I will probably layer DD with an undershirt, shirt and sweater with mittens and a warm hat and then run her out to the car and cover her in a warm blanket.
I say that now though, because it's only October and it's about to get nasty cold. Probably by January I am going to be saying "eff it" because it's -20.

Fuck me, there goes my plans for moving to Canada

And -20 is not even that bad.

My kid is going to wear a big winter jacket in his carseat this winter.  I guess that is more of a FFFC than a UO.

    Why?
    My kid will too.
The short answer to why is 'Canada'.

Yup, exactly.  There is no way I am carrying my kid around without a jacket on in the cold.

We really tried this last with Alastair last year...nope. Doesn't work. As long as we were still in the bucketseat, it worked out ok, but after that? No.
And now with two kids who are mobile, it's not doable.

OMG I hate that feeling!  When your boogers start adhering to each other in your nostrils.

Northern Midwesterner here.  My kid is getting a squishable coat and wearing it in the carseat for errands.  I'll do this crazy thing called "properly adjusting my carset straps" and all will be well.

  • People flying with kids should always check their bags. There is no reason for a roller bag to take up space in the overhead and I am forced to gate check my laptop travel bag while on a business trip. Diaper bag (and pump bag if you are on a longer flight and need to pump during it) are all you need to carry on and it should fit under your seat.

I like to board last with a child even when flying without DH. Backpack on my back, baby on my hip, car seat in my other hand. It's not hard. I haven't flown with both kids by myself so having 2 car seats to install with 2 kids in tow would make me board first.

Once they turn 2 that isn't an option so why not have the kid in the car seat instead of checking it. I also prefer to have an under 2 child in a car seat because it is easier for them to sleep, gives me more freedom during the flight, the comfort/familiar factor for the child to be in their car seat, and you know it's safer. I always asked for a seat for James when I checked in and all but one time got a free seat with a ticket.

Makes complete sense! I had just never seen it or really thought about it. I'm not sure I would pay for the extra seat for the convenience, but if I could get the free seat, for sure.

We always rent a car when we fly and I'm not going to use a rented car seat.

An UO for my DH: he hates when people come to visit and don't rent a car so we make sure we always rent a car even if we are staying with friends/family.

  • Here is my UO.  I'm not a fan of my Ergo!  I can't figure out how to put it on so that DD is on my hip.  I don't like that she can't face outward - she wants to see what is going on.  I got it cheaper on Mambargains but honestly don't see myself using it.  I tried to figure out the side setting and gave up and got out the Bjorn that we used with DS which took me 2 seconds to put on and she got to face outward and watch DS play soccer.  Maybe I need to find a video about how to use the Ergo on the side setting...but ain't nobody got time for dat!

I too frickin LURVE Christmas!  I don't want it to start in August, but once we reach the 100 days until Christmas mark I am so excited.  I also LOVE all the cheesy Christmas movies on the Hallmark Channel, ABC Family channel, etc.

I did ff because I didn't want to be a complete ass to the person in front of us. I never recline my seat because I feel like it is rude to take up the little space people already have, but I'm also not going to completely deny that ability to the person in front of us.

The hip carry with the Ergo can be a little bit of a challenge at first, but it's really nice once you learn how to do it! Aubrie and I walk to playgroup with her on my hip. She likes to have her arm around my neck and play with my hair while she happily points at things and babbles away. Sometimes it can be a little tricky to get them in and out by yourself though. Have you watched the YouTube instructional videos?

That's what I think I need to do - watch the video.  I was trying to figure it out 10 minutes before needing to leave to take DS to soccer alone with her and just gave up and used the Bjorn so I'll have to watch the video when I have a few minutes to concentrate on it.

Here is my UO.

I've never figured out the hip carry either. But DD is happy facing in on my front or back, so laziness will likely prevail for me and I may never figure it out.

Yep, watch Ergo's video--I was overthinking it, and it's super simple now that I know how to do it.  We use the hip carry all the time and I love it.

  • Once they turn 2 that isn't an option so why not have the kid in the car seat instead of checking it.
I I never considered this. That's pretty smart. I've also never seen someone carry on a car seat. Here is a question-- Are you allowed to gate check a stroller AND have a car seat to carry on? Or do you have to check one of the two with your bags when carrying both?

We have a really long flight coming up and if I'm being honest-- I'm a little terrified. It's a fourteen hour flight and we went ahead and bought DS his own seat. Neither of us want to have to hold him for that length of time. BIL, SIL, and our nephew (5 weeks younger than DS) will also be on the same flight. I'm praying the boys sleep for most of it, as it takes off at 8pm. It's tough, though because once we arrive at our destination it will be 5pm the next day and they'll both be bright eyed and bushy tailed.

Anyone have experience with lengthy flights/jet lag adjustments with lo's?

  • You can gate check both the stroller and car seat, or gate check the stroller and carry on the car seat. The car seat doesn't count as a carry on item since it is on the seat and not stored.

  • TFFC: I have never put DD in a carseat on a plane and probably never will. She struggled to sit still for a little while this summer but then settled down and fell asleep. I wore DS in the Ergo.

  • Another flying UO: People who purposely sit in your assigned seat because they want it are assholes.

"Oh...you have the window seat? I didn't think you'd mind if I sat here, next to my wife."

Actually, yes, I do mind. I paid $15 extra to choose my seat. You could have done the same. Now move.

This has happened to me on my last 3 consecutive flights.

  • It stands to reason that your plane won't get rear ended, therefore RF'ing is unnecessary.
My grandpa always said, sit in the back of planes.  Planes never back into mountains.

People flying with kids should always check their bags.

I disagree. I fly about every two weeks and usually have dd in tow. I generally wear her and roll my carry on. If my pump doesn't fit in my bag, it goes under the seat. I don't usually bring carseats because the in laws have their own to eliminate this. I have just as much right to use the overhead bin for my one bag as a business traveler. I don't want to add an extra 30 to 40 minutes to each leg of the trip.
