But, again, do you need a structured preschool environment to learn those things?

You mean negative attitudes about not being in the higher level reading groups and whatnot?
Kids notice these things at a very young age. My daughter is dyslexic and noticed from K on that people were better readers than her. It really did a number of her confidence. Now that she's caught up and passed her reading level, it's one of her greatest sources of pride about school.
That's great!!! I dated a guy in college who was dyslexic and he said its super hard. She/you should be so proud.

But this is a good thing, though. Right?
Totally but the lack of confidence bled over into other things and totally wrecked school for her and we still deal with the fall out from it. I mean, we changed schools because of it...had to leave her rich person private school for public school even.
I have worked with so many kids who have convinced themselves they are dumb. They are not, but it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy.
But this has an opposite. You tell a kid (especially a girl) that he/she's smart from a young age, he/she may not work as hard as a child who actually has to work for their education.

You don't have a background in education, do you? As I said, there is a ton of educational research. Many, many studies have been done. Self-efficacy is one of the most important things for students to develop.

Nope, but I have two almost-3 year olds.
But thanks for the condescending attitude. That was much appreciated in a completely legitimate series of questions.

There is just not a lot of research to back this up. However there is tons of research on SFP just google it.

I wasn't being condescending. I don't know your lyfe, maybe you're a professor of education at Harvard. And I answered your question. Telling kids that they're smart is never bad. Giving them free grades so they think they're smart and don't have to work is bad. But that's not the same thing.
No, because not a lot of research has been done on this phenomenon. It's a new area of study, from what I understand.
I'm not saying that what is learned in preschool isn't important. I'm wondering if there is a need for a structured preschool environment (which is a question that has yet to be answered.). I mean, what happens when Montessori kids go to kindergarten or higher level of public school? They don't have the traditional structured day but they're still learning the same information.

I don't know which preschools you've been to but "structured" isn't really the word I'd use to describe them. Free play is important, exposure is important, socialization is important. Rote memorization is not nearly as important, which is what several people have said.

So the preschools teach the reading and whatnot in that environment, yes?

Okay so we know tons of research has been done on the benifits of preschool. There has never ever been a study done that say preschool is harmful. Bottom line. Why would I not send my kid? I am a huge proponent of universal preK. I think it should be offered and affordable to everyone. Not just my kid because we can afford it. I am convinced it is just another factor in the gap between lower and upper class getting wider and wider.

Which is why in this thread I was advocating for free Obama socialst pre-school for everyone -- because of the financial issue the OP brought up.
Also, I just have to throw in there my other thing on pre-school -- lots of research proves that many kids that don't have it eventually catch up around 2nd grade. BUt in a typical elementary school set-up, the damage is done. The kid is labeled "slow", "behind", "difficult", whatever. Why would you saddle you kid with that if you have an alternative?
But why would you need to send the kid to preschool if you can teach them the requirements yourself or send them somewhere not labeled as a "preschool" but still gives the same type of instruction?
That's why I kept mentioning the structured preschool environment. If your kid can walk into kindergarten knowing all the things andrews mentioned in her post without ever having set foot in a preschool, is the need for a legit preschool environment needed?

Because it's more than that. I only listed the academic things nothing about the social or classroom expectations which can not be taught at home. I also verb seriously doubt the regular joe without a teaching certificate has the skills to teach the skills necessary. Hell I would go as far to say that people don't even know what their kids need to know.

Almost all our daycares have amazing curriculum. Daycares and preschools are the same here as far as getting kids prepared for kinder.
Preschool is necessary for structured days, transitions, independent play, solidifying knowledge necessary in Kindergarten (or starting knowledge if the kid isn't that familiar with the concepts) all in order for the kid to not be socially stigmatized in school and/or create a solid basis for future education?

Yeah, our DC goes from standard DC to a preschool environment, even though it's not technically called a preschool. There are other legit preschools here that have preschool hours and whatnot, but no DC options.

Lol...I'm certified to teach, so does that mean I get out of sending lo to preschool lol. I see a lot of research thrown around. I guess many of you forget that intelligence is genetic as well right. There are some children who just have a hard time grasping certain concepts. The biggest problem I've seen is parents who give 2 craps about school and that attitude is passed down. The kids I've seen who have been the most far behind are the one whose reading logs have not a single book logged in or parent signature. The parent isn't involved, why should the kid care? Having a positive attitude and to want to learn, that's the key here, comes from home.
As for the rest...you know what my kid goes twice a week to "preschool" and it's great for her. I have friends who send their kids to daycare 50 hours a week and their kids are thriving. If you don't want to send your kid that's your choice but I find it ridiculous to act as if a kid is being punished for going (as op implied).
Haha!!! I never said anywhere (nor do I THINK) that she would be being punished at preschool.
And as far as the show you say I turned it into, besides that, I think there was some good conversation. I learned things today I didn't know.
