For those of you who've commented that we were unfair to the boys, or that preschool is a must.... DS1 and DS2 both test well above their grade levels in both reading and math. So I really don't think sitting out of preschool hurt them in the least. And no, I'm not bragging. It's just what the facts are.

I have 3 kids: DS(8), DS(6) and DD(3). I've been a SAHM since DS's were 4 and 2. I love it! DS's didn't do daycare or preschool, just went straight to kindergarten.
DH and I have started talking about preschool for DD, 2 mornings a week 9-12 at our church. I have some indecision.
On one hand, the boys didn't go. She is my only child at home, and we've always told people we thought it was unnecessary for us to send DD to someone else for things I could teach her.
On the other hand, she is SO very busy. And she's the only one at home which means I'm her playmate. It takes a long time to get things done with her bc she's into everything. More than the boys ever were. And DH says I'm stressed and frustrated at the end of the day.
Thoughts?

Who said you were unfair? I missed that.
Let's just say her retelling of this tale to Parenting was....creative.
Ah...I wondered if there was a bat signal sent out.
Of course, there's a way to read what really went down.

I still want to know about the BIL who is pissed he didn't go to preschool. That's a hidden gem nobody is discussing that rivals A14 in terms of "WTAF?"

I see I was brought up in the Parenting thread. Fun times.
@ILOVEBOYS I still want to know who told you that you did something wrong by not sending your boys? Or that it was unfair? And I'd love to know why you felt the need to run and tell on us. There is a major different between thinking preschool is a must {which is not what most people said} and telling you that you were unfair {which from what I can find, nobody said}.

Well, I just assumed he was a gigantic loser and had mommy issues. WhoTF remembers preschool and thinks it was super important at any age past like 7?
Aw the SAHM board hurt your feelings? So sad you are welcome to stay on parenting. Since we are all such twats.
I can't with another SAHM/Parenting beef. We are exactly the same, minus some GIFs.
Then why aren't you over there more, miss lady?

@KateMW thank you for the page to ask your question a second time. I don't live on the bump. In answer of your (and Andrewsgal) question: I Heart The 80s member October 1 Everyone here does 3 years. Well @iloveboys since you didn't answer it the first time, instead decided to just cry about it, I figured it was the only way to get a straight answer out of you.

If by "retelling" you mean we came over here and read this shit with our own eyes... then yes.
And do you think the way she retold it was accurate?
I am always fascinated by Parenting's perception of the SAHM board. Because my "wealthy bitch" post it is way, way less crowded than my "coupons like a TLCer to make ends meet" post-it.
Where are these couponing threads?

@KateMW, to be honest, I didn't see either of your posts until about 5 minutes ago. Like I said, I don't live on the bump. Cool your heels.
Omg! It was ME that said it was unfair! Huh...who would have thought? But yeah, I do think sending a kid to K without any preschool is unfair. The requirements for Kindergarten are very different from years ago. I think preschool is very important. Sue me.
So I am genuinely curious....what do they DO in kindergarten where you live? When DS's went through kindergarten, they started at the beginning of the year practicing writing letters and reading basic words, working up to writing on their own and reading small storybooks. (If you're talking educational requirements)

A lot if what you just described. I was talking about how it differs dying years ago. We learned letters in K growing up. We entered not knowing a whole hell of a lot. But now they are expected to be doing a lot. Preschool is important. That's what I said. Still rolling that you took it to another board.
Why are they expecting this in Kindergarten now, though?

They have to know stuff in K because the common core standards are being implemented nation wide and students will fail the mandatory standardized tests if they can't do the things required in the standards. Then the parents are all, "oh em gee, my kid is in the 4th percentile for writing, he must have a learning disability" and he gets an IEP and sucks out more funding from an all ready underfunded public education system just because some people think they can teach their kids everything they need to know.
Don't waste tax dollars. Send your kids to preschool.

But shouldn't this point to the uselessness of standardized testing more than special snowflake parents?
I mean, if standardized testing is directly linked to tax dollars and the kids are being taught to the tests instead of general knowledge, isn't that a larger issue that isn't being addressed by TPTB right now? If we're worried about our kids being able to compete with kids from other countries, shouldn't we be teaching our kids the way those countries teach theirs? Or at least using their example instead of their exact teaching methods? I know some Asian countries have seriously whack education programs. They teach the kids well, but the workload is insane.
This is in no way a ding against teachers because I know their hands are tied by this stuff.

Yes, there is a lot of stuff we should be doing. Our education system is not even close to perfect, but it is what it is. Kids need to know stuff going into K or they will be left behind. A child who is held back is 50% more likely to drop out of school before graduating high school (even being held back in kindergarten). A child's brain is over 80% developed by the time s/he is 5 years old. The stuff they do when they're young may seem inconsequential but it is incredibly important. I get up on my soapbox about this but I used to be a teacher so I use that as an excuse.
But do the kids need the structure of a legit preschool? What things, exactly, do kids need to know these days before going into kindergarten? Letters and numbers, I'm assuming, but what about reading? Basic math? Vocabulary?
And how does red shirting fit into all of this?

My child was expected to know all her letters and sounds, 25 basic sight words, counting to 30, be able to read CVC words. Statistically most kids catch up by 2nd grade, but do you really want your child spending three years playing catch up? Even in first grade DD knows the high, middle and low reading groups. I imagine being in the low group would be a huge hit to a child's self esteem.
I imagine it would be a hit to be in the low group, but with work and study the child could get up to the higher groups. I read an article awhile back that said that kids who are placed in the higher level groups or "gifted" groups at a younger age have, ironically, a harder time learning than kids who move up from lower groups.
I would assume that the correlation between preschool and higher education would be more of an issue in homes where the parents weren't as involved with their child's education.

Kids notice these things at a very young age. My daughter is dyslexic and noticed from K on that people were better readers than her. It really did a number of her confidence. Now that she's caught up and passed her reading level, it's one of her greatest sources of pride about school.

There has been quite a bit of educational research done into it and yes, preschool has consistently proven to be enormously beneficial. If you're genuinely interested and not just snarky, the NAEYC has lots of information, you can google it, it's a big organization so it will pop right up.
