I'm 36 weeks tomorrow, does this mean my OB

will probably do a vaginal exam at my appointment tomorrow afternoon?

This kind of freaks me out, I'm not sure why. I know effacement/dilation doesn't mean much, I'm just not sure I want to know... Just one more thing to be (needlessly) freaked out about!

  • You could just tell them no. They aren't necessary and you can decline.

  • I'm opting out of them this time around.  They don't really tell you anything, offer a small chance of infection, and in my experience, hurt like hell.  It's not a requirement.  You can say you choose not to have it done.

  • yes your OB may want to do one. but as they pp said they are not necessary and you can just tell them you don't want it done.

  • Decline them. Problem solved!

  • what about them freaks you out...there are risks and they don't really tell you much. they are also kind of nice to know if there's any progress at all. i didnt' dilate at ALL with DS until i was 10 days over and induced so it was good to know how i wasn't progressing.

if you really don't want them you can absolutely decline it. just ask your Dr...i would say it's not until your next appt or closer to 38 weeks they'd want to start them though

  • It honestly does not bother me at all that they do them. I understand that it doesn't really mean anything but I kinda like knowing what my body is doing. I will be induced at 39 weeks for placental issues unless he is here before then, so its nice to see if I will be a good candidate for an induction.

  • Mine does them starting at 36 weeks. I have to strip down to have my GBS done anyways so I don't mind. But like PP have said, you can always decline them.

  • At 36 weeks 8 wouldnt let my midwife check me even if she wanted. It is your decision whether to get checked or not, but there is no need to do it at 36 weeks.

  • Me too, and that's coming up on Friday.  Do internal exams really hurt and do you bleed afterward?

I think it just depends. I don't think that the hurt per say but more uncomfortable then anything. eh I had so many of them last time towards the end that it really wasn't a big deal. I never had any bleeding or spotting afterwards but it is no different then any type of bleeding spotting you would get after any vaginal exam

  • I'm not sure if my office regularly starts them at 36 weeks but I go for GBS tomorrow and will make sure to let them know that just because my pants are off doesn't mean I want to be checked.
  • The first time I had a cervix check was at 29 almost 30 weeks pregnant. I had my 36 week appointment today and they did a cervix check. For every appointment here on out I will have one was well.

There's a lot of that in the world it seems. I keep watching A Baby Story and I'm just appalled at what these women allow to happen to them during labor.

Do you have an incompetent cervix or something? Seems awful invasive without a medical condition requiring a check. It would also tell them more to send you for a cervical length survey via ultrasound rather than a vaginal check since they're so unreliable at 30 weeks unless you're quite dilated. From what I've been told, it's guessing from 0-3 cms.

I plan on declining them. And I don't have to have a GBS since I tested positive at 12 weeks.
