Other than flour is there anything that can be mixed with powdered baby formula to be able to "stretch" the can? We've been using flour but it makes the formula too thick and it's hard for anything to come out of the nipple. I would move to the next nipple stage but the flow would be too fast for LO to keep up. I've heard of using cornstarch since it is thinner but haven't been able to find much info on it. Do any of you use it? Not sure if it matters but we use similac.
Re: formula question
uh, this.....I also can't imagine that is very good for your childs stomach! Poor thing...give that baby the nutrients he/she deserves! Like PP said, switch to the store brand formula if that saves you some money....

I love the face and the fact that someone is NOT enjoying getting their picture taken lol. Those are my favorite pictures!

Mix it with cocaine. That way you & baby can be high together. Also the can will last a long time...or is it the drugs? I can never seem to remember...
this and in the meantime get to a food bank! Great way to make your child sick btw!
Please, just stop.

huh? stop what?
She is 4 weeks old. She doesn't need a gastric bypass!!
You are ridiculous. Call your pediatrician if you aren't making this *** up. The end.
Your right it is. You have a baby. babies DO NOT sleep throuh the night immediatly. They aren't supposed to. Know what else your MIL might have done with your Dh? Not used a car seat...does that mean you aren't?
If you don't believe anyone here, ask your baby's Pediatrician.
Oh, and...You're a moron.
My Colton...Growing up so fast!
And Coralee, his baby sister...On the way!
You're question has been answered, smart one. Go buy a damn can of formula, and feed your baby properly.
I didn't see anybody claim to "know it all" just because they have a kid. It's pretty common knowledge that incorrectly measured formula is AWFUL for your baby's digestive system. People know this from talking to their baby's doctor, not just guessing.
If your IL's have a problem with your baby not sleeping through the night at only 4 weeks old, they get the award for world's worst grandparents, and either they, or you, need to find a new place to sleep.
Your daughter IS sleeping like a normal person...a normal 4 WEEK old person. Glad your MIL was able to raise 5 kids on glue but that is really frowned upon now. My grandmother in law raised 7 kids...even she thinks this is worst thig she's ever heard of. Call your pediatriation and ask this same question. See what they say.
If your MIL gave you this awesome advice, why don't you go ask her?
I'm sad for you, OP. My heart is broken for your LO.
You can't just feed your baby whateverthefuck is on hand just because...because...you want to SLEEP?! Guess what? I want to sleep too. But when I'm sleeping and my baby NEEDS me, I get myfuckingassup and give him what he needs! Which would NEVER EVER EVER be a homemade formula concoction.
Gah.
And now you know it's MUD.
News flash: your 4 week old child isn't a "normal person" it's a 1 month old infant!
Did you ever consider maybe mixing her formula with flour was upsetting her stomach and making it harder to sleep?
Your DD sounds like such a selfish kid waking people up, wanting to eat. Oh, she's a 4 week old baby...and thats what they do.
Wow. I actually wanted to cry when I first read this because I felt bad that someone was having that much trouble properly feeding her child, because I thought it was a financial thing.
Now that I have the rest of the story, I still want to cry... Because apparently some people are really this stupid.
OP - you shouldn't be thickening the baby's formula with anything.
A 4 week old isn't supposed to sleep through the night. I'm sorry your IL's aren't getting the appropriate amount of sleep b/c of the baby waking up but maybe you should find some place else to live if you're living in their house.
Ask your doctor if you don't beleive us. But, thickening with flour or corn starch is dangerous.
Your MIL may have done this, but that doesn't mean it was okay. Back then babies also slept on their bellies in lead painted cribs. Just putting it into perspective for you.
Again, please do not thicken your baby's formula.
P.S. Reflux does not = gastric bypass.
Ok, I have read all the replies and I agree with EVERYTHING that posters replied, BUT, I'm only going to say that for a 4 week old infant, you cannot add flour to her formula. It's not the absolute worst thing that I have ever heard of, after all, the first formula that came out was little more than flour and milk solids, fine , whatever. Babies that age need to be fed every two to three hours. Bottom line. There is no way around it . If is disrupting every one ELSE in the house , fine. But you are her mother and need to learn to anticipate her needs so as to lessen the disruptions in your house.
When she is older, like 12 to 16 weeks, you can mix a little rice in her formula, but that is not a great practice either.
But for the love of all that is holy, stop putting flour in her formula.
this, you obviously are not going to listen to us but your pediatrician should know what is best for your child.
Also, this (bolded) just drives me nuts. Just b/c something was done in the past and the child was not affected does not mean it is safe. For example: A woman breastfeeds her child while driving (true story). The child is not hurt/injured/killed the first time or even the second time this happened. By your logic then there is no safety issue with her doing this
... Our parents/grandparents didn't have to wear seatbelts when they were young, child restraint laws were more lax and guess what? Those were changed b/c it was discovered it was dangerous.
If you are not willing to listen to us then at the very least put in call and leave a message for your pedi's nurse regarding this situation. It will cost you no money and very little time. The only reason not to do this is if you already know what you are doing is wrong and plan to keep doing it b/c heaven forbid you 4-week old child should disrupt your life (and that of your family).
Also, onto the second bolded comment. Your daughter does not sleep like a normal person, she is an infant, and your daughter's sleeping just like most infants do. I am willing to bet that if you did a poll you would find that most of the mom's on here are dealing with LO's who have similar sleep schedules. Most of them understand the fact that they have to put the needs of their children ahead of their own needs. Again, call the pediatrician. If we are right then you are, albeit unknowlingly, endangering your child's health. A few hours more sleep should never be at that cost.
You honestly don't think you feeding her flour has something to do with her waking up all the time? She's probably crying because you're causing her to have digestive issues. And as for it not being related to money, then why are you trying to "stretch the can"? Please get that child some help because you are setting her up for a lifetime of GI issues!
