Babies: 0 - 3 Months

formula question

Other than flour  is there anything that can be mixed with powdered baby formula to be able to "stretch" the can? We've been using flour but it makes the formula too thick and it's hard for anything to come out of the nipple. I would move to the next nipple stage but the flow would be too fast for LO to keep up. I've heard of using cornstarch since it is thinner but haven't been able to find much info on it. Do any of you use it? Not sure if it matters but we use similac.

Re: formula question

  • You shouldn't dilute your formula with anything, even flour. Please stop depriving your child of nutrients and buy another can of formula.

uh, this.....I also can't imagine that is very good for your childs stomach! Poor thing...give that baby the nutrients he/she deserves! Like PP said, switch to the store brand formula if that saves you some money....

  • I hope this is MUD.

  • I've never heard of mixing anything I and I would be careful...you don't know what type of allergies your LO may have....I would not be adding flour. Plus I wouldn't eat raw flour anyway.....
  • WTAF?  If you're doing this because you can't afford the formula, my heart goes out to you but you need to find another way to take care of this child.  Like someone else mentioned, use store brands.  Look into aid of some kind, like WIC.  Your baby's system is very fragile.  You can't be screwing around with what s/he is eating.

  • Please look into some sort of assistance to help you provide safe nutrition for your baby. This is not safe practice, please do not continue this behavior. I hope this is MUD, but in the event that this is a legitimate question...look into WIC, SNAP etc...email the formula company and they will send you formula checks, or purchase store brand versions of your formula. Do not cut it with anything, and likewise do not water it down either, I've heard of people doing this and it is very unsafe.

  • Sadly, I don't think this is MUD. Store brand formula is significantly cheaper, and depending on your LO's consumption, could cost you less than $20 per week to give your child the nutrition it needs and deserves. If you can't afford this, please get assistance.

  • Mix it with cocaine.  That way you & baby can be high together.  Also the can will last a long time...or is it the drugs?  I can never seem to remember...

  • Wow some of you were very rude! I simply asked a question. It's not that we can't afford formula so I don't need welfare or any other help. We only use powdered formula at night and before naps, otherwise we use the liquid kind. The reason for mixing is it makes it more filling and its supposed to help her sleep longer. Since we only use powder formula for that I just wanted to know if there was anything else I could mix with it so the can lasts longer.
  • How old is your LO exactly? I'm pretty sure you can only "thicken feeds" for the purpose of decreasing reflux symptoms with rice cereal. But I'm not sure what age you can start adding that. It's not to make the can last longer though... Call your pediatrician in the morning and ask this question. I'm confidant he or she will be very clear about what you can and can not do in terms of feeding options.

Your right it is. You have a baby. babies DO NOT sleep throuh the night immediatly. They aren't supposed to.  Know what else your MIL might have done with your Dh? Not used a car seat...does that mean you aren't?

    image

  • I suppose you all are experts since you have a baby. Newsflash just having a kid doesn't mean you know all! My mil has raised 5 kids and grandkids and none of them have had any issues due to this sleep remedy. If you all don't agree that is fine, don't do it with YOUR kid. If my daughter slept like a normal person I wouldn't have tried this but her waking constantly disturbs everyone, my ils have to get up early so something had to be done. Also for you all to be parents the name calling is plain absurd. Parenting is about doing what is best for your family, not judging others.
  • If you don't believe anyone here, ask your baby's Pediatrician.

    Oh, and...You're a moron.

  • You're question has been answered, smart one. Go buy a damn can of formula, and feed your baby properly.

I didn't see anybody claim to "know it all" just because they have a kid. It's pretty common knowledge that incorrectly measured formula is AWFUL for your baby's digestive system. People know this from talking to their baby's doctor, not just guessing.

If your IL's have a problem with your baby not sleeping through the night at only 4 weeks old, they get the award for world's worst grandparents, and either they, or you, need to find a new place to sleep.

Your daughter IS sleeping like a normal person...a normal 4 WEEK old person. Glad your MIL was able to raise 5 kids on glue but that is really frowned upon now. My grandmother in law raised 7 kids...even she thinks this is worst thig she's ever heard of. Call your pediatriation and ask this same question. See what they say.

If your MIL gave you this awesome advice, why don't you go ask her?

I'm sad for you, OP. My heart is broken for your LO.

You can't just feed your baby whateverthefuck is on hand just because...because...you want to SLEEP?! Guess what? I want to sleep too. But when I'm sleeping and my baby NEEDS me, I get myfuckingassup and give him what he needs! Which would NEVER EVER EVER be a homemade formula concoction.

    Gah.

News flash: your 4 week old child isn't a "normal person" it's a 1 month old infant!
  • Did you ever consider maybe mixing her formula with flour was upsetting her stomach and making it harder to sleep?

Your DD sounds like such a selfish kid waking people up, wanting to eat. Oh, she's a 4 week old baby...and thats what they do.

  • You're doing it wrong. You're suppose to add cereal. Ya know, throw some lucky charms in that shiit.
  • Wow.  I actually wanted to cry when I first read this because I felt bad that someone was having that much trouble properly feeding her child, because I thought it was a financial thing.

Now that I have the rest of the story, I still want to cry...  Because apparently some people are really this stupid.

If you want to thicken at least use rice cereal. But at 4 weeks this shouldnt be a option at all. She's probably got the worst tummy ache ever. I pray this is Mud.

  • OP - you shouldn't be thickening the baby's formula with anything.

A 4 week old isn't supposed to sleep through the night.  I'm sorry your IL's aren't getting the appropriate amount of sleep b/c of the baby waking up but maybe you should find some place else to live if you're living in their house.

Ask your doctor if you don't beleive us.  But, thickening with flour or corn starch is dangerous.

Your MIL may have done this, but that doesn't mean it was okay.  Back then babies also slept on their bellies in lead painted cribs.  Just putting it into perspective for you.

Again, please do not thicken your baby's formula.

P.S. Reflux does not = gastric bypass.

  • Ok, I have read all the replies and I agree with EVERYTHING  that posters replied,  BUT, I'm only going to say that for a 4 week old infant, you cannot add flour to her formula.  It's not the absolute worst thing that I have ever heard of, after all, the first formula that came out was little more than flour and milk solids, fine , whatever.  Babies that age need to be fed every two to three hours.  Bottom line. There is no way around it .  If is disrupting every one ELSE  in the house , fine.  But you are her mother and need to learn to anticipate her needs so as to lessen the disruptions in your house.

When she is older, like 12 to 16 weeks, you can mix a little rice in her formula, but that is not a great practice either.

But for the love of all that is holy, stop putting flour in her formula.

    Oh, and...You're a moron.

this, you obviously are not going to listen to us but your pediatrician should know what is best for your child.

    imagelexiheartschris:

Also, this (bolded) just drives me nuts. Just b/c something was done in the past and the child was not affected does not mean it is safe. For example: A woman breastfeeds her child while driving (true story). The child is not hurt/injured/killed the first time or even the second time this happened. By your logic then there is no safety issue with her doing this Huh?... Our parents/grandparents didn't have to wear seatbelts when they were young, child restraint laws were more lax and guess what? Those were changed b/c it was discovered it was dangerous.

If you are not willing to listen to us then at the very least put in call and leave a message for your pedi's nurse regarding this situation. It will cost you no money and very little time. The only reason not to do this is if you already know what you are doing is wrong and plan to keep doing it b/c heaven forbid you 4-week old child should disrupt your life (and that of your family).

Also, onto the second bolded comment. Your daughter does not sleep like a normal person, she is an infant, and your daughter's sleeping just like most infants do. I am willing to bet that if you did a poll you would find that most of the mom's on here are dealing with LO's who have similar sleep schedules. Most of them understand the fact that they have to put the needs of their children ahead of their own needs. Again, call the pediatrician. If we are right then you are, albeit unknowlingly, endangering your child's health. A few hours more sleep should never be at that cost.

You honestly don't think you feeding her flour has something to do with her waking up all the time? She's probably crying because you're causing her to have digestive issues. And as for it not being related to money, then why are you trying to "stretch the can"? Please get that child some help because you are setting her up for a lifetime of GI issues!
