Strangers guessing LO's age

When people guess your LO's age, do they usually guess right on, older, or younger than LO's actual age?

When we are out and about strangers seem surprised when I say Vito is 12 months.  They think he is younger and always say things like "oh, he's just a little guy."  I don't think he is particularly small.  He's about 23 pounds and 31 inches tall - so average-ish for a one year old, right?  I think it is his lack of hair on top (he rocks the Kentucky Waterfall/mullet/biz up front, party in the back look).  I don't care that people think he is small because I assume they either don't know about babies or forget what their babies were like at this age.  Just wondering how people perceive your LOs.

Younger. She is little and only has 2 teeth

  • Always younger. She's smallish for her age though, 19lbs.

  • Always younger if we are holding him or in a stroller. He's about 30" and 21lb, so he's also smallish for his age.  If he's walking around than they usually guess a bit older than his age.

My two boys are getting a surprise May 2015!

  • Younger, but it really depends on the person.  I find people with kids around the same age are normally right on.  Bell is a skinny little thing though.

  • People are confused. She has very little hair (and what she does have is very blonde), so her baldness makes people think she's younger. But, she's big (24 lb, 31 in at 12 months), so based on that, they think she's older. So, I think people have no clue what to expect based on her unique combination of traits. :)

  • People don't usually guess for some reason, but when they ask they always think he's big for his age. He's fairly tall, but not unusually so, and he's thin. I think the baldness throws people off. He still looks like a big baby rather than a small toddler.

  • older. he's about the same size as your guy op, or was at his one year appt (31", 23.5 lbs).

  • People get thrown off when they see him walking or when they see that he has a bunch of teeth too.  He does look like a baby more than a toddler, but then he does "toddler" things.

Usually this is true, but last week at the grocery store a lady with her 9ish month old daughter said, "Wow, how does he sit up so well in the cart like that?"  She had her baby in the infant car seat (perched on the cart too Sad).  She thought he was only 6 or 7 months old.  I was like "what??"

  • I've only had 1 elderly lady make a completely inaccurate guess. DD was 11 months at the time and the lady guessed she was 4-5 months old. To be fair, DD was in my Ergo and we were seated on a bus so I'm sure that made it a little harder to guess, but I think maybe the lady was senile. :)

She's in the 97th percentile for height and 75th percentile for weight and most people guess her age pretty well by looking at her. She definitely looks like a toddler now.

  • They always think he's older, and I can't blame them because not many little boys have this much hair after 4 haircuts at 12 months!

ETA: But size wise he's not big.  He's 22.5# and the nurse said 29.5 inches I swear she was way off because she also measured our niece a few days later at 31" and Ty's a few inches taller than Avery!

Older. Always older. Someone guessed TWO a couple weeks ago. I thought she was nuts, but then someone else last week guessed 19 or 20 months. His pedi told me to be careful, because if people think he is older they will expect more from him and then that could be a bad situation

DS is 21.5 pounds, 31.5 inches.  DS is in the 95th percentile for height, 40th percentile for weight. So he's not small, really. He's tall and thin. Which probably could make him look older since kids start to thin out when they get older.

I do think it's funy though. Because to me, DS is a normal one year old. And I wonder what the heck kind of two years other people are around if they think he's that old!

That happened to Isaac too - they measured him at 32.5 inches, which would be the 98th percentile. Then my husband measured him with a tape measure because he didn't believe it, and he was 29 inches. Personally I think he's somewhere between that, but he is very hard to measure these days!

  • I don't know why people bother guessing babies ages, b/c it seems to me they are always off!

They usually guess she is younger, because she's little (19lbs) and if we're at a playground they can see she isn't walking.

  • I think people are confused by C.  She is pretty tiny for her age, she's only about 19 pounds, but she has a lot of hair and teeth.  Some people guess younger and some guess older.

  • Everyone guesses older! They always say "she is so big for her age!" which I dont get because she's really not - she's 19 lbs! She does have huge cheeks though so that makes her look bigger and really long hair so it probably throws them off.

  • Younger.  I think because she doesn't have much hair and she's on the skinny side.

  • If I'm carrying Clara, people think she is just a huge, young baby. They say "Wow, that's a big baby!" And then I tell them she is 1, and they are like "Ohhhh, I see." She is just so bald and has fat little cheeks, so she looks young despite being average sized. When she's walking around people are often shocked to see a bald baby walking so well, and always ask how old she is.

I think Isabella looks older. She has a very mature looking face. And of course she's absolutely beautiful :)

  • People usually think Em is older. She is 29 inches and 22 pounds, but she has so much hair and I always do it different ways. Also, her eyebrows and eyelashes are very filled in. She looks like a little girl instead of a baby, but she still doesn't walk.... I really should update my soggy picture.

  • Always younger. He's a peanut though, 21 lbs and 28 inches. People always say, " Oh, he's walking so well!!" and I respond, "Well he is almost 13 months old...".
  • Older.  DS2 has a mouthful of teeth and is walking like a pro.  Most people usually guess 18 months.  I've had a couple people think he is 2.

  • They always think he is older. He is 33inches and 26 pounds, and is usually keeping up with his 2 year old cousin, who is smaller than him.
  • Always younger. Last week the cashier at the grocery store thought he was 5 months! He is more on the petite side ( 19lbs 5oz) but I just think  its because babies today are so much bigger.

  • Everyone thinks he is older.  I've even had people say they thought he was close to 2!  He is tall and has a lot of hair - maybe that's it?  I think people often just have no frame of reference.

Audrey is smaller than your "little guy" and people thing she's huge!  At her 1 year check up, she was 20 pounds and 29.5 inches.  People ask me how old she is and they are shocked when I say 1.  They think she's closer to 2 or say something about she's "such a big girl."  I think it's just because she walks so well and loves to babble.  Maybe that makes her seem older??

  • Most people think she's younger because she's tiny (18 lb at 1 year) which I get.  Occasionally I'll meet someone who just has no idea.  I went to home depot to pick up something for our bathroom when DD was 11 months.  The greeter loved DD and said how cute she was and seemed amazed that she was sitting up in the cart.  I just said, well she's 11 months, she's just tiny.  The woman was still amazed she was sitting up.... Not sure when she thought babies should be able to sit unassisted, lol.

Yes This is us, too. LO is really tall and thin. She is 21 lbs and 32 inches tall, which is apparently off the chart for height for girls her age and only 60% for weight. The nurse said her BMI was only 15!!!

I guess because shes tall and thin, she looks even taller. Plus, she has been walking since 8months and has a lot of hair, so people usually think she's older. One time when were out to eat when LO was only 9 months, so douche bartender thought she was 2 years old. DH was like, "um... no." Ha.

Older...He is a pretty big boy though...he was almost 33' and 27 lbs at his 1 yr check-up. When he was 9-11 months people kind of assumed he was like 2 and would ask why he still drank from a bottle, had a binkie...I had to constantly tell people he wasn't even a year. Then people say oh wow he's a big boy.

  • I don't think anyone has ever tried to guess his age. They ask me how old he is and when I tell them they say wow, he's a big guy! DS is 31 inches and 22 pounds so he's definitely not huge!

  • I find people always trying to guess LO's age.  Without fail, they always guess younger.  Just yesterday at Trader Joe's the cashier guessed 7 months.  I think most people just have no clue.  She's twice that age almost.  Granted, she is on the smaller side.

  • Without a doubt, they ALWAYS guess older! She's 28 lbs, 32 in and has 13 teeth. She's a big girl and everyone is shocked when I tell her age. The fact that she's not walking is the only reason anyone believes me.

  • So funny you posted this today... At lunch earlier some lady said to me "is he just under 6 months?" I told her no.... He's almost 13 months.  I mean I know he's not a huge kid (22lbs and 29 in), but he was sitting in a high hair chatting and waving away eating a quesadilla and drinking water out of a straw. I think that people just totally forget what their kids were like at that age.

9/14 - HSG, Hysteroscopy and laparoscopy showed tubes clear, but found and removed Endometriosis, scar tissue and 2 small benign masses on my tubes.
11/14 - Daily ultrasounds confirmed that my follicles are not releasing the egg and every other day blood draws showed very low progesterone... DH's SA was near perfect
12/14 - moving onto meds!!! Hold up!!!  Surprise BFP after only taking the progesterone!  Now what do I do with all of the other meds we already paid for?!  Due at the end of August 2015 Beta#1- 4434 @ 22DPO  Beta#2 - 7335 @ 25DPO Beta #3 - 14429  @ 28DPO
  • Older - usually 2. But an old man at the mall asked if he was 4. WTF? He's big, but still clearly a baby when you watch him walk lol.
  • When I tell DS's age, a lot of people say, "Oh, he's a BIG baby!"  Um...no.  He's in the 25th percentile for height and between 25-50 for weight.  Thanks for playing.  This has gone on for months, and I'm not sure why.  He DOES have a certain boyish charm that makes his face look older than he is, I think.  But the comments I get are always about his size.

Since a lot of you are saying that people say oh he is BIG, does it bother you? It always bothers me. I don't like it LOL
