my mom called me today to tell me she has shingles. we were around her all day yesterday and she held lulu. so i've called the pedi and googled, it looks like she could get chicken pox. anyone else experience this?
i am so raging pissed at my mother right now. she knew she wasn't feeling good. and then today she tells me it's shingles. i feel like she must've known (she's had them before) but didn't want to "ruin" thanksgiving.
Re: dd exposed to shingles
My mom gets shingles. Once you get it, you keep getting it any time you're exposed to someone with shingles or chicken pox, and since she works in a nursing home, she has outbreaks at least once a year. She's always really careful when she does, but she is actually more at risk from my sister's kids than they are from her.
But Joseph was exposed to my grandma when he was 6w, and we'd driven 1000 miles to take him to see her, and she was diagnosed the morning we arrived. Pedi said as long as we minimized physical contact, he was not in too much peril. We waited until the last day we were there to let her hold Joseph. (My grandma is 85, and for all we knew, it could have been her first and last chance to hold him.) Pedi said the worst that would probably happen was he got chicken pox and then didn't need that vaccine. Grandma was at the end of her bout, and both her doctor and pedi agreed she was probably out of the contagious phase, but we were careful nonetheless. When she held Joseph, he was well-wrapped and I switched blankets immediately when she was done.
He was fine. No pox.
AGGGGG!! I totally read this and thought of your situation!! I'm so glad you used that pic of Everly for your siggy. TOO CUTE!!!
ok, so it's not the end of the world. and i don't blame my mom exactly. she just frustrates me on so many other levels (yay, holidays). she's already totally turned the tables on me and is insisting that i'm a hypochondriac and going to make my daughter a hypochondriac. because my mom thinks dd can't get chicken pox from her. which is flat wrong.
but thanks for sharing your experiences, ladies
