dd exposed to shingles

my mom called me today to tell me she has shingles. we were around her all day yesterday and she held lulu. so i've called the pedi and googled, it looks like she could get chicken pox. anyone else experience this?

i am so raging pissed at my mother right now. she knew she wasn't feeling good. and then today she tells me it's shingles. i feel like she must've known (she's had them before) but didn't want to "ruin" thanksgiving.

Re: dd exposed to shingles

  • The same thing happened to us about 6 wks. ago.  My Mom came and visited for 2 days.  She had this giant red thing on her neck that looked like a bite, and she had walked through a big spider web the day before, so she assumed that's what it was.  Well the day after she left she went to the dr. and was told it was shingles and that anyone she came in contact with that had not had chicken pox was at risk.  I was pretty mad too, but she felt horrible about it, and I know she would have NEVER put Everly at risk if she would have known, so I let it go.  We watched her for a few weeks, and luckily nothing happened.  Hopefully the same thing will happen with your dd.  Good luck.

  • My mom gets shingles. Once you get it, you keep getting it any time you're exposed to someone with shingles or chicken pox, and since she works in a nursing home, she has outbreaks at least once a year. She's always really careful when she does, but she is actually more at risk from my sister's kids than they are from her.

But Joseph was exposed to my grandma when he was 6w, and we'd driven 1000 miles to take him to see her, and she was diagnosed the morning we arrived. Pedi said as long as we minimized physical contact, he was not in too much peril. We waited until the last day we were there to let her hold Joseph. (My grandma is 85, and for all we knew, it could have been her first and last chance to hold him.) Pedi said the worst that would probably happen was he got chicken pox and then didn't need that vaccine. Grandma was at the end of her bout, and both her doctor and pedi agreed she was probably out of the contagious phase, but we were careful nonetheless. When she held Joseph, he was well-wrapped and I switched blankets immediately when she was done.

    He was fine. No pox.

  • I guess I'm in the minority... my DD got a very mild case of chicken pox from my grandmother who had shingles- literally 3 spots!  I was so excited because now she doesn't have to get the vaccine.  I hope you have the outcome you are hoping for, though!

  • my FIL had it a few months ago. Our pedi said it was okay as long as he kept his arm covered up and washed his hands often. We spent the entire weekend with him before we knew he had it (and had been handling DD) and an entire weekend after, and he held her lots. It was not a problem for us and she did not get chicken pox. Try not to make your mom feel terrible, i understand it's upsetting and you have every right to be protective of your baby and worried, upset, etc. Hopefully your baby won't get sick, just keep things as sanitary as possible. Good luck.
  • ok, so it's not the end of the world. and i don't blame my mom exactly. she just frustrates me on so many other levels (yay, holidays). she's already totally turned the tables on me and is insisting that i'm a hypochondriac and going to make my daughter a hypochondriac. because my mom thinks dd can't get chicken pox from her. which is flat wrong.

but thanks for sharing your experiences, ladies :)

  • If you have specific concerns, you could try paging Chihuahua. She's always really helpful and generous with her expertise as a pedi.
  • dh has shingles 2 months ago. dr said that as long as ds didnt come in direct contact with the broken out areas, and we were sure to wash our hands a lot, he would be fine.  ds never got sick :)
