Why are people so against buying dogs from pet stores... they need saving too :(

Yes, the dogs do need a home.  However, buying from a pet store usually (not always) means you're buying a puppy from a puppy mill, and they treat the dogs (especially the moms) horribly.  So, I believe the reason that buying from a pet store is frowned upon is because it keeps encouraging the people who run the puppy mills because people are buying the dogs.  I'm not against purebred dogs if someone doesn't want a rescue, but I would go to a reputable breeder where you can see how the animals are treated, living conditions, etc (and in this case, it sounds like Alicia is confident that the dog is not from a puppy mill given her history with the pet store).

I agree with the above exactly - yes you might be 'rescuing' the puppy, but the mothers are treated so horrendously at puppy mills the there is no way I would buy a pet from a pet store, but can totally understand buying from a breeder where you can meet the puppy's parents to get an idea of temprement, what size they are likely to end up, etc. I also think supporting reputable breeders who put a lot of time and money into making sure that their bloodlines are healthy is important. Rescuing a dog is awesome and I admire those who do it, but it's not the only valid choice.

For some reason I am currently obsessed with the idea of getting a puppy (or better still a micro pig - lol), but there is no way we will be able to deal with a baby and a new puppy!

  • Congrats, Chester is adorable! And YAY for buying dogs, we can hold hands and make our own little dog buying club!!!!1!!1

I bought my son's dog as well, because like someone else stated, I really did think it was important to get the breed characteristics that I was looking for. And well, even though I personally can't stand the dog, he is a perfect fit for my son. Sue me.

I picked up my female cat from off the street, and I paid over $300 to spring my male cat from the joint. And if we want to get really technical on purchases, I've spent more money on my male rescue cat than I have on the other two.

    Dislike. Pet stores=supporting puppy mills.

Oh Jesus, Mary, and Joseph.. Seriously? are you that ignorant? Not ALL puppy stores get their puppies from mills. I used to work for the puppy store my puppy came from (as I stated earlier in the week when I was thinking about getting a puppy) and I have personally seen some of the HOMES these puppies come from because the workers do in-home visits when puppies are a few weeks old. these are registered breeders who specialize in ONE kind of dog, and love their dogs and puppys like their own children. They also don't forcibly breed them to get a litter every few months. This was the first time the puppy store had Cocker Spaniels in over a year, actually. I would not buy a puppy from a store that used mills.

I am sorry that I don't read all of your posts, calling someone ignorant shows a complete lack of class. Your response only shows your na?vet?, why go to the pet store when you personally know the breeder?  This is fuzzy logic at best.

Yeah, and telling someone they lack class is totally klassy.  In most cases, calling someone ignorant is a statement of fact. In this case the people giving her sh!!t for her puppy and spoiling her joy at the new addition to her family IS ignorant because they clearly don't know the whole situation. Maybe you should get a dictionary and look up the meaning of the word ignorance. Ignorance basically = lack of knowledge. The people being @ssholes have a lack of knowledge regarding this thread. I don't see how stating the fact that people are ignorant displays a lack of class.

However, trying to make someone feel like sh!!t for bringing home a new puppy to love and care for is pretty classless. It's like making fun of a baby after its named. What's done is done. ...and when it comes right down to it, it's really none of our d@mn business anyway.

Get off your high horses. Seriously. There are more earth shattering things for you to get a stick up your butt about than someone buying a dog at a d@mn pet store!

Speaking of a lack of class. . . I did not use profanity; I can see from your siggy that you are quite comfortable with expletives.

I also realize that you did not read the rest of my post wishing luck and advice.

Yeah, the fact that I deleted the part of the post I wasn't responding too totally means I didn't read it.

Also, I never claimed to be classy and yes...I am very comfortable with "expletives" (that's such a fancy, pretentious word I'm surprised my ignorant, classless @ss didn't have to look it up in the dictionary!!!)

Get off your high horse before you fall and crack your tiara, princess.

  • I love your puppy Alicia!

My DH is allergic so I can't have one Sad

Also, you picked the best dog name ever. My Aunt and Uncle have a miniature poodle (not teacup, just the perfect size) and he is like their child. He is the most sweetest, loving dog in the world. And DH loves him because he is hypo-allergenic!

Chester is adorable. I hope he's easy to train, for your sake! I can barely get my tired @ss off the couch these days to make dinner, let along train a puppy! Wink

  • I think you may be a bit masochistic. Having just gotten past the puppy stage, I couldn't imagine doing it pregnant, then with a baby. But that's your life.

I'll keep my opinion on your purchase to myself. I can tell it won't do any good.

The good news about your new puppy:

You have plenty of time to house break before the baby comes.  Puppies also are easier when dealing with children (in my experience) because they are small and adapt well to the new addition.  It's like adding to their pack.  I know quite a few people with new puppies and new babies, and the two get along like best friends.

Thats something we thought about when we were picking Chester. We wanted a breed that would be good with kids, and wouldn't get to big. I grew up with a cocker spaniel and I loved him so much. It also helps that we have a Shih Tzu already and he's well trained. Chester is learning from him. =)

  • Congratulations on the new Puppy!! (and the enjoyable thread).

While I got my dog from a shelter (for a $250 fee) I would have bought him from a pet store if I saw him there first.  When you fall in love you fall in love.  Yes puppy mills are horrible places (I don't think anyone is debating that) but if you fall in love with a dog you want to give it a good home.  Period.  I really don't think Alicia is single-handedly keeping the puppy mills in business so chill.  She is happy about her dog.  Let her be happy.  What should we do to all the dogs in the pet stores? Let them be put to sleep?

Again, congratulations on the dog.  Potty training my little bugger was a huge headache ( especially since we didn't have the yard fenced in at the time). Wish you all the best with your cutie Big Smile

  • OMG I just squealed out loud in my office because he is so cute! I had cocker spaniels growing up and they are great dogs. Calm but loving and tolerant.

  • My dog is from a breeder. We paid for him. We paid A LOT for him. We got him knowing we were going to have a little one soon, and wanted to know exactly what we were getting - temperament, shedding, personality etc. The breeder we got him from is extremely reputable, in fact I have become close friends with a bunch of people that have all gotten their doodles there - (another FB group). I know this dog is going to be amazing with our baby and was the right choice. He is part of our family and I wouldn't think twice about getting another one from the same breeder.

I think people that rescue dogs are wonderful - but sometimes people just have something else in mind. BTW I donate to my SPCA when I can.

Alicia, congrats on the puppy and good luck house training Smile

I had cockers growing up also. My mom had one Named Buffy that she got when she married my dad, then Buffy had a daughter, Susie that was born 6 years before me. And then when I came, we got Mister. Buffy lived to be 24, Susie to be 23, and Mister died when he was 19. They were such sweet and loving pets. I KNEW that I wanted Elliot to grow up with one. =)

  • He's cute!  But you are crazy!!  I can't imagine having a puppy and a newborn.  Hopefully he is awesome and trains really easily.  I wouldn't be worried about him adjusting, he'll probably do great since he is so young.  It is just going to be a lot of work with a baby and a puppy!

  • Yay for a puppy with curly ears!  And cocker spaniels are such nice, solid dogs.  Great for a little one pulling up to their feet lol.  I can't have a dog in my apartment, but all these puppy posts are making me want a kitten bad!

  • We have two cockers and they are great with DD.  Tomas is a black and white English Cocker and Lily is a brown and white American cocker.  GL with a puppy and a baby.  It's a lot of work and our Lily even turned 1 a week after DD was born, so she wasn't a baby baby puppy.

Yay for Shih Tzus! I love my little guy.  Technically I rescued him but it was more out of good timing as I wanted a Shih Tzu and my mom's coworker was sending hers to a kill shelter because she decided she wanted a Rotweiler (sp?).  However, I was fully intending on purchasing one if this little guy hadn't shown up.  I wanted a Shih Tzu... not a lot of rescue Shih Tzus at our local pound.  I have rescued and purchased my whole life.  You have clearly stated that you knew the pet shop well and did the right thing.  OH and way to talk them down on the price! Score!

I'm sorry your excited post has turned into a debate.  Enjoy your puppy and remember haters are gonna hate!

  • Super cute, but also, you are either super brave or super crazy!! lol. I'm stressing out enough over taking care of my 5 year old lab after the baby comes, I couldn't imagine having a puppy! I think you have plenty of time to house train him before the baby comes though, so that's good. My lab was pretty much fully house trained within a month, and only had accidents if I dropped the ball on taking him out on time.

And now you're making me want a puppy. Damn you Alicia!!!

  • Cute puppy! I know some people think getting a dog now is crazy, but I think its better to do it now than after the baby is born. You need to see the temperment of the dog before your LO gets here, and make sure the puppy will be a good fit. Congrats, and I am jealous you have something to keep you busy so your pregnancy will go by quickly!
