He's a gold-colored cocker spaniel. I fell in love with him a few weeks ago at the pet store, and we visited him three times. Tonight we went by to see him. I asked how much he was and they said $700! I made an offer...that was SUPER low (less than a third) and they took it. haha.
he's 12 weeks old, and precious. Meet Chester.
(Hey FB friends, this is still a secret on FB! We haven't told DH's parents yet, and they'll probably freak out, even though it's none of their business)
Re: I got a puppy! =)
Yes. There is only one shelter near us and the dogs are all really sick. we already have another dog, and I didn't want to bring a sick dog into our home. Plus, I wanted a young dog.

Exact same thing I thought too. Cute dog for sure, just wish OP would have gone the rescue route.
Very adorable!!
What did the doctor say? Is everything ok?
Oh God love you.
You're going to housebreak a puppy while pregnant and with an infant? You're a braver woman than I am.
The puppy is a cutie, though. I'm convinced that God made puppies so cute because that's the only way they survive the housetraining phase.
2 of my pets are rescues, but my oldest is a purebred Pug that I purchased from a breeder. She is the third Pug I have purchased. I will very likely do it again. People who don't always rescue aren't evil. I have reservations about pet stores and have never bought a dog from one, and I have always been meticulous about researching breeders and only using responsible ones. I don't feel guilty about it one bit.
My 2 cents.
Same for babies. If they came out looking like hairy 40yo men, there'd be no more procreating!
I can't stand people that talk about people like they're not RIGHT there and able to hear or read what said people are saying.
I didn't get to talk to the doctor today. =( Hopefully she'll call me tomorrow
Gah...I know. Oh, and I'm totally not naming any names but *some* people on here have ugly husbands. I bet their dogs are ugly, too. Thank heavens your dog is cute.
Allison, you are forever cracking me up!!!
LOL!! Oh Allison you make me laugh
I think your dog is adorable! I was going to buy a pug a couple weeks ago, but I changed my mind. Getting used to an infant will be enough for me to handle
Alicia, we must be sharing a brain. Today I was driving around with DH and I was crying (blame the hormones) and I made him pull over so that I could play with puppies at the shelter. We didn't take one home (insert more tears) but it was amazing! Dogs=cure all.
I have GOT to stop spontaneously bursting into tears so that they have more sway with DH in emergency situations, such as needing a puppy RIGHT NOW.
Congrats on the new addition!
LMAO I'm so glad that my opinion has provided two whole weeks of entertainment for this board. And that's just so far - you're welcome!
And Alicia, I know you can read it. It's why I posted it here instead of PM'ing the person I quoted. Sorry if I hurt your feelings or whatever, I just very *rarely* see the need to purchase a dog given the vast number of other resources available, and the public information about pet stores, where they get their stock from, and what "reputable" means to some (most) "breeders." So yeah, you got a cute dog, but that's where my excitement for you ends.
I'm sure that's about where her giving a d@mn what you think ends as well...
even at our shelters you still have to BUY your pet. Whether its from a pet store or a shelter, you're still rescuing that baby!
& people say this board is slow & boring... HAH.
Anywho - your puppy is adorable, Leesh. I'd say it was a good purchase.

Oh Jesus, Mary, and Joseph.. Seriously? are you that ignorant? Not ALL puppy stores get their puppies from mills. I used to work for the puppy store my puppy came from (as I stated earlier in the week when I was thinking about getting a puppy) and I have personally seen some of the HOMES these puppies come from because the workers do in-home visits when puppies are a few weeks old. these are registered breeders who specialize in ONE kind of dog, and love their dogs and puppys like their own children. They also don't forcibly breed them to get a litter every few months. This was the first time the puppy store had Cocker Spaniels in over a year, actually. I would not buy a puppy from a store that used mills.
I am sorry that I don't read all of your posts, calling someone ignorant shows a complete lack of class. Your response only shows your na?vet?, why go to the pet store when you personally know the breeder? This is fuzzy logic at best.
Good luck with your pup, dogs are a great addition as you can see in my siggy, I have two beautiful dachshund rescues that are family to me. My vet recommends playing a soundtrack with babies crying at feeding time to help them feel rewarded during stressful crying. They also recommended buying a bunch of toys from goodwill to acclimate them to the boundaries of their toys vs the babies toys.
Congrats Leesh! He's adorable.
That being said. .. I think you're out of your d@mnable mind! LoL. (Though, if it were me and I saw that face, I proly would go out of mine too!)
Yes, the dogs do need a home. However, buying from a pet store usually (not always) means you're buying a puppy from a puppy mill, and they treat the dogs (especially the moms) horribly. So, I believe the reason that buying from a pet store is frowned upon is because it keeps encouraging the people who run the puppy mills because people are buying the dogs. I'm not against purebred dogs if someone doesn't want a rescue, but I would go to a reputable breeder where you can see how the animals are treated, living conditions, etc (and in this case, it sounds like Alicia is confident that the dog is not from a puppy mill given her history with the pet store).
I know there is one Mall company (about 70 malls across the US) that is not going to renew the leases of any pet stores that sell live animals. In fact, in NJ, they are going to rent space out to some of the SPCAs and set up adoption centers in the mall, which I think is a wonderful idea.

Everything MissButters says is true, however that are TONS of purebred rescue dogs available as well. Even if you don't have many sharers to choose from, there are often breed specific rescue groups in every area.
To the poster who thinks paying a rescue fee is the same as paying a breeder or let store, I would encourage you to look in to the costs of running a rescue and you'll see that your adoption fee will bart cover your new family member's basic medical care. That's assuming you get a dog who came in healthy rather than one who was sick and injured when found.

You got a puppy?!?! Besides the fact that I'm uber jealous I admire your bravery -lol. We got ours in July. She is an almost 9 month old lab and she makes me question my sanity about every 5 minutes. I love her to death but she has a whole lot more going than puppy behaviors. I couldn't imagine getting her now. In my pregnancy moments of crazy I think we should get another dog just so Betsy has someone to tire her out. Then I come to my senses and call the trainer...again.
Congrats on your cutie Chester! He's quite adorable!
Congratulations!! He's adorable! I have 2 huskies at home & keep harassing DH into letting me get a pup. He said the next living thing we are bringing into the house is popping out of my vag. Yeah he's classy like that.
I'm so jealous! Good luck to you!!!! All I can say dog doors = life saver!!
Yeah, and telling someone they lack class is totally klassy. In most cases, calling someone ignorant is a statement of fact. In this case the people giving her sh!!t for her puppy and spoiling her joy at the new addition to her family IS ignorant because they clearly don't know the whole situation. Maybe you should get a dictionary and look up the meaning of the word ignorance. Ignorance basically = lack of knowledge. The people being @ssholes have a lack of knowledge regarding this thread. I don't see how stating the fact that people are ignorant displays a lack of class.
However, trying to make someone feel like sh!!t for bringing home a new puppy to love and care for is pretty classless. It's like making fun of a baby after its named. What's done is done. ...and when it comes right down to it, it's really none of our d@mn business anyway.
Get off your high horses. Seriously. There are more earth shattering things for you to get a stick up your butt about than someone buying a dog at a d@mn pet store!
but the difference is, if you buy from a shelter, you are helping to support the buearacracy that stops and punishes those who are cruel to animals. when you buy from a store that gets puppies from mills, you are supporting those who perpetuate the cruelty.
Alicia can buy from the shelter or store, i dont care.. ppl are gonna do what they are gonna do... and yes, a puppy is a precious puppy, no matter where he comes from! personally i just cant pay for a dog, even though i want a French Bulldog sooooo bad!!! they are sooo cute! but i just cant pay $2000 for a dog, when i know there are awsome dogs that will be killed at the shelter. i think the average stay at a shelter here is about 3 days, thats pretty bleek, and i would take them all home if i could. seriously!! when i lived with my mother, she was the voice of reason and would tell me no... my hubby on the other hand, cant resist either. but we made a commitment to ourselves that we would not have anymore dogs until we move to the country.
i almost adopted a lab at PetSmart the other day! i had to call my mom to talk me down! lol i have a problem.
The good news about your new puppy:
You have plenty of time to house break before the baby comes. Puppies also are easier when dealing with children (in my experience) because they are small and adapt well to the new addition. It's like adding to their pack. I know quite a few people with new puppies and new babies, and the two get along like best friends.
I buy all of my dogs. I make sure they are purebred and certified as well as coming from a reputable breeder. I think for some people it's important to get the breed characteristics that they really want. I think a cocker spaniel is a great choice for your new growing family. Good luck with the training!
