No joke.
This is about 15-20 minutes from the school district I teach. We are on a two-hour delay today because there were over 50 exotic animals that escaped from an exotic animal farm, and only 25 have been caught/killed at this point. It's chaotic and it made national news! CNN report:

I agree... the area/county where this happened is VERY rural. Probably every house has a handgun. I'm betting there is a lot of "hunting" going on right now. It's out of control... A freakin' giraffe was wandering down the highway!
this.
and wow thats nuts!
I heard about this on npr this morning but didn't quite catch where it was. You realize you're like a celebrity to me now, living so close.
It sounded to me like the sheriff's office went all gang-busters to protect the public at any cost rather than work with animal control agencies from the state and from the zoo. But there's only so much you can learn from a news report that's only a few minutes long.

could you imagine seeing a giraffe or camel on the side of the road? I'd probably think I was hallucinating

I think the reason for killing them is more towards when the sun starts to go down. If they don't keep eyes on the animal they could fall asleep some where and not be seen, then when they wake they are pissed...which makes it worse for humans and other animals (SIL works with bears and when they have to use tranquilizers the bears always wake up super pissed).

Haha, yes, I'm here! We we are more on the outskirts of where it occured, and they were just taking precautions for our district. After the two hour delay, I figure they felt safer with the daylight.
Most of the schools right next to us are closed, though. They found a monkey several miles from our school, though!
