Exotic Animals on the Run, Schools Closed

No joke.

This is about 15-20 minutes from the school district I teach. We are on a two-hour delay today because there were over 50 exotic animals that escaped from an exotic animal farm, and only 25 have been caught/killed at this point. It's chaotic and it made national news! CNN report:

I just heard about this on the radio!  Insane!  But why are they killing them and not using tranquilizers?  That makes me sad...

I agree... the area/county where this happened is VERY rural. Probably every house has a handgun. I'm betting there is a lot of "hunting" going on right now. It's out of control... A freakin' giraffe was wandering down the highway!

    this.

    and wow thats nuts!

  • I heard about this on npr this morning but didn't quite catch where it was.  You realize you're like a celebrity to me now, living so close.

It sounded to me like the sheriff's office went all gang-busters to protect the public at any cost rather than work with animal control agencies from the state and from the zoo.  But there's only so much you can learn from a news report that's only a few minutes long.

I think the reason for killing them is more towards when the sun starts to go down.  If they don't keep eyes on the animal they could fall asleep some where and not be seen, then when they wake they are pissed...which makes it worse for humans and other animals  (SIL works with bears and when they have to use tranquilizers the bears always wake up super pissed).

I just saw this on the Today show! Crazy!  They were talking with the Sherrif (?) and Jack Hannah, and they were saying that now with daylight and being able to asess the situation, the plan was to now caputre the animals and not kill.  When they didn't know what they were dealing with it was more of a "shoot first, ask questions later" kind of thing, but now they want to save the animals.
That's good news!  I missed the today show, but what an odd incident.
  • This is so crazy! I just read about it on my CNN app and came here to see if anyone was nearby. Stay inside! I love how the article says if you see a wild animal "Don't run. Just scream." lol
I used to be a big deal.  Now I'm just old.
  • omg, I'd be freaking out, lol. That is a lot of animals to have to keep track of & wrangle. I'd be afraid they missed one & it was hiding in my backyard or something. hahah

Funny and scary at the same time!

I just heard on the radio that a few animals are still at large and the town is on lockdown.  Nicole, did you finally go into school/work?  I hope you didn't encounter any wild animals along the way!

Haha, yes, I'm here! We we are more on the outskirts of where it occured, and they were just taking precautions for our district. After the two hour delay, I figure they felt safer with the daylight.

Most of the schools right next to us are closed, though. They found a monkey several miles from our school, though!

  • So very sad. I think I read that the owner of the sanctuary let all the animals loose and then killed himself. Not sure exactly what happened. I feel bad for those poor animals and the poor guy who thought letting these animals fend for themselves in the wild and then killing himself was the only thing to do.
