Flu shot, who's getting one?

They just offered Flu shots at my office and I declined.  Like I do every year.  Is everyone getting a Flu shot because they're pregnant?  I never get one, my husband doesn't get one and we don't have our son get one.  None of us have ever had the Flu.

Re: Flu shot, who's getting one?

  • I just got mine at my last OB appointment.

I never got one until I was pregnant with Ella, and now I get one every year.

  • I always get one and I'm definitely getting one this year. The flu is no fun! Especially when you're pregnant and can't take any medications.

  • I wasn't planning on it, but I ended up getting it at today's appointment. I'm a SAHM, so I'm not around a ton of people anymore, but I didn't want to risk it. I got the flu at 36 weeks with DD (in 2008, where the vaccine they gave out was for the wrong strain).

  • I am absolutely getting the flu shot. The past 3 years of gotten it, I have been flu free! (knock on wood) And I work in a school where the flu is everywhere! Our school lets our teachers get it for free so I will for sure do it.

  • I got it Monday at my appt.  I've never had the flu and neither had anyone else in the house until my 3yo twins caught H1N1 at daycare this past Feburary.  I'm getting everyone vaccinated this year.

Me. Absolutely. I work in healthcare and know how deadly the flu can be for a pregnant woman. I won't be risking it.

I agree with this.  I normally do not get one (though I did with H1N1 because I was working at the mass dispensing clinic), but absolutely will be getting one.

  • I just got mine at my appointment today. I don't want to deal with getting the flu while I'm pregnant. It's bad enough having a stuffy nose from allergies, but to have a full blown flu would be horrible.

  • I just got mine at the Ob/gyn an hour ago.  I never used to get them either (and never have had the flu) but it's quick and easy and doesn't hurt at all -- tons less than the DIY finger prick for the 1st tri screening.

  • Me, DH and J have always gotten one. I think that comes from me working in healthcare as long as I did. At the hospital, you got one unless you were exempt by your doc. Wasn't really optional unless you were allergic or something.

  • I get one every year because I am considered high risk due to my asthma. As far as this year goes, I am sure I will get one again, but I will follow what my OB suggests.

  • I already got mine last week at my OB appointment.  Both of my girls will be getting them at the end of October.  That's when DD#1 goes in for her 1 year appointment.  I'm not sure if DH will get one this year or not.  He did get one last year since we had a newborn in the house.

I have had to flu before (so has DH) and that one time 5 years ago makes me want to get the flu shot even more!  I can't imagine having the flu while pregnant and while taking care of two kids.  I literally could not get out of bed for 3 days.  I lost 10lbs in those 3 days becuase I couldn't eat anything.  Not cool.

  • I already got one. Still kickin'!
  • I always get the flu shot and especially wouldn't decline it while pregnant.
  • Definitely. I don't want to be sick w/no meds, and I definitely don't want to subject my little one to my own high fever or risk sharing the flu virus with him/her.

    THIS! Same deal for me!

  • I get one every year.  In my line of work, you really don't ever get to take time off if you're sick.  You just deal with it.

. . . . and I work with a bunch of germy, nasty guys.  Anything I can do to avoid getting the plague from them, I do.  I already got mine this year from my OB/GYN.

  • I'm getting mine as soon as possible. I always get one because I meet so many different people with my job.  Also, I've had pneumonia 4 times before and I have asthma.

I do not fear vaccines, although needles are a different story!  Yes, it hurts, but I'm not risking getting sick especially being pregnant.  Just because you've never had the flu before, doesn't mean you won't get it this time around.  36,000 Americans die every year from flu (CDC) which is outrageous because there's a cure.

I told the grandmothers to get their shots (flu and pertussis) too. Great-grandmother brushed me off. She obviously doesn't know I don't play. I will hold the baby for ransom. LOL!

  • I'm undecided. I've never gotten one before, and the only person in my family who has was my father, who ended up in the hospital with a severe reaction the one time he did it a few years ago. Needless to say, I'm a bit skittish. I'm constantly exposed to germs (public transit, volunteering in a lot of less-than-pristine locations, sick kids in my office, etc), but haven't caught even a little cold in years. FWIW, my parents had problems with the medical establishment, so my first doctor visit EVER was to get my first round of immunizations before I was allowed on my college campus. The doctor was such a wench who gave me a hard time about my parents' beliefs as she was jabbing with needles and making me drink polio. I'm still petrified of doctors and needles.

  • I've never gotten one, and I don't remember having the flu since I was little. I've always been kind of anti-flu shots but I guess I will get one if my OB recommends it.

  • I'm still undecided.  My OB hasn't mentioned it yet.  I didn't get it when I was pregnant with my son either now that I think about it.  Vaccines scare me but I'd be uber pissed at myself if I got the flu while pregnant.  Guess we'll have to see.  Thanks for all the responses!

  • I get one every year, but I would definitely get one if PG.  You're so much more susceptible to illness when PG.

  • Got mine yesterday at my OB office. I've been getting them the last few years due to meds I take. I'm around kids all day long and their germs. The last thing I need is the flu. I got pneumonia this past spring and it SUCKED!

I got one when I was pregnant with DS, and I will definitely do it for this pregnancy as well.

They shouldn't scare you. They are one of the greatest advances in public health ever.

  • for sure. I got one last year when I had a newborn and lazy DH didn't go get his (free at his work). He ended up getting the flu and I had to keep him away from DS for 2 weeks and take care of his pathetic whiny man self. He IS getting the shot this year, in addition to the rest of the fam. My MIL dissed them last year and said it wasn't necessary, and guess what, she got the flu too.

  • What is it that you're allergic to that gets you out of it?

This would be great knowledge to sock away in my excuse arsenal, right next to my choice of malaria-prone countries for vacation every year so I never am eligible to give blood :)

  • I most likely wont. I didn't with my son and I was a pre-school teacher at the time. Plus it's not like just because you got the shot you wont get the flu, strands change all the time. I also feel weird about the fact that each year it is a different vaccine its not something that has been around forever and perfected over time...its new because the strands are new. For me it's not something im overly concerned about...If my doctor highly recommends it i may consider it because i trust him...doesn't mean i'll do it.

  • I'm conflicted, but leaning towards "no"--I have autoimmune issues, which means I have a hyperactive immune system to begin with.... introducing a weakened strain of a virus to an already cranky autoimmune system worries me, especially with a baby growing in there. The last thing I need is for my immune system to flare up on me, especially now.

I haven't had a flu shot in years, and am not feeling that the benefits will outweigh the risks to my baby. This is a personal choice; there are no "right" or "wrong" answers.
