Babies on the Brain

WBOTBD? (Call from DCP)

Gabe's DC teacher called and left a message at the house.  Apparently he fell down the "plastic steps" this morning on the way to the playground (there is a half flight of steps at the front of the daycare, I don't know if she means these or other ones, nor do I know how far he fell).  He didn't appear to have hit his head, didn't cry, responded to her when she asked him if he was ok.   Later on the playground, he was on a plastic climbing structure and suddenly fell backwards and landed on his butt on the ground.  He cried, she comforted him and when he stood up he was very wobbly.  He went to climb back up and his right leg wobbled like it was going to hold his weight.  She immediately picked him up, checked him from head to toe and couldn't find a thing wrong with him.  He said his foot hurt but was fine when she took his shoe off and put it back on.  Since then, he has not fallen again, is acting normally, bearing weight on both legs, but she said seems to just be a little "off-balance".

He's currently napping.  Oh and FWIW, he is pretty well coordinated and very careful about climbing things.  I've never seen him fall from a raised surface.  I'm going to call and find out how far he fell the first time, but WWBOTBD?  Should I take him to the pedi?  Urgent care?  Leave him there?

Re: WBOTBD? (Call from DCP)

  • I would at least call the pedi and see what they want you to do.  My kids fall all the time, so that in itself wouldn't bother me, but the lack of balance and not bearing weight thing would concern me enough to call or take them in.

  • I would bring him to the pedi.  If it were Oisin, I would leave it.  My kid never stops falling down.

  • See how he is after his nap. If he seems fine, I wouldn't worry. Either way, if it's bothering you, call the pedi.

  • You might want to call the pedi just to ask.  But I guess neither thing seems too major to me (unless the first fall was worse than she let on).  I remember falling as a kid (hell, as an adult too) and it's really jarring to land on your a@@ and can make you almost disoriented so the lack of bearing weight on his leg may have been more of him just feeling kind of off and dizzy.  Hope he's ok!

  • I would call the pedi.  Normally I wouldn't be too concerned, but it sounds like the DCP feels something is off and I would get him checked out because of that.

  • I would call the pedi and see what they say.  Adelyn cracked her head pretty hard on a marble floor and they just had me watch her but it's better to be safe than sorry.

  • I'd probably see how he was doing after nap and make a judgement call then.  Kids fall a lot but if he's still off balance, then call.

I just spoke to DH and this is what we're going to do.  He is going to call DCP and let them know if she sees anything else that is "off" after nap to call DH and DH will take him to the pedi.

Oh and apparently, there are 3 plastic steps down from the larger playscape-thingy on the playground and that is what he fell from the first time.
