Whenyouseesparks: I just don't understand how you can sit there and backpedal and tell me you made that comment because of people who live beyond their means. No, you made a blanket statement about car ownership and when we try to defend our choices (which are the best for 90% of families) we're told "It's not you I"m talking about" thats BS.
I just don't get how you don't understand that buying an older, less safe, used car is preferable. Let me know how it works out when you need to get the transmission replaced and you're out a car for a week and have to pay for a rental. Then tell me what option is "cheaper". There is a high price to pay for convenience and reliability and that's OK with me.
I'm not backpedalling; I still personally wouldn't do it and I think there are other options, but it comes down to a values judgment which is totally subjective. A car just a couple of years old is significantly cheaper than a brand new car and that doesn't automatically make it less safe. Haha I know it sounds cheap to say it's not you I'm talking about, but it's NOT you I'm talking about. I know I made a mistake with what I financed when I was younger and knew nothing about money. And I would definitely not say 90% of people finance their vehicles responsibly... Seriously, lurk MM, and see what people get into with their car loans.
I was a loan officer at a bank. I saw people roll over overage from one car loan into a new car loan. I gave loans to people who worked at McDonald's for $8/hr and bought Nissan Maximas for $35g's. I know irresponsibility. That doesn't mean I come on a public forum and lambast anyone who finances a car longer than 3 years. That's what I'm saying.

I am really tired of the super transparent AW'y unpopular opinions and wish that people would post actual opinions that are truly unpopular more often. IMO the unpopular opinion thread isn't a place to passive-aggressively AW your life accomplishments, your child's accomplishments or your financial situation while berating others for theirs.
ie: I have a baby with hair, so my unpopular opinion is that all the bald babies are creepy. Or, I have no car payment, so I think all you people with car payments are stupid heads with no financial sense, etc. etc. and so forth.
It's about being bold and stating an actual opinion like say, "I don't really give a shiit why a woman chooses to have an abortion or how many she has had. It's not my business, my body or my choice."
FWIW - I did this in today's thread. Twice. Only like 2 people made any kind of comment about it.
That's my AW post for the 8 o'clock hour.
Unable to even.

How does 8 thousand dollars equal a beater car?? ::grumble... rich, skinny biitches... grumble::
Also, I'm not says your biitches 'cause you're skinny, or skinny 'cause you're rich, or rich 'cause you're a biitch, or rich 'cause you're skinny, or biitchy 'cause you rich, or...
It doesn't necessarily! I honestly don't know what is the least you can pay for a reasonably safe car these days. We're very moderate...we drive an '04 Camry that's been paid off for years and financed an '08 Santa Fe in '09. I can't remember exacly but I want to say it was in the low $20k range. But I grew up driving beaters and I know how unreliable they are. And things break and like Snoopy said, suddenly you owe thousands on a transmission and have no car. So even though we're a little more financially comfortable now (although still choose to live below our means because I'm chea/frugal lol), I will argue for the average American being able to justify a reasonable car loan for a safe, reliable car every time. Not that people should live outside their means...but that paying a little interest would be worth that IMO. From my own experience driving cheap, unsafe, unreliable pieces of crap for years.
Also, I hope htis doesn't sound snobby. I'm not AWing my cashflow or lack thereof at ALL. I'm a typical rags-to-middle class story and am totally not about being flashy at all. And we're comfortable and frugal, not rich!
Am I just digging myself deeper?
Boobs.
lol! no I wasn't thinking that. the rich skinny biitches was a total joke, I swear! We paid 2,000 for our 2001 minivan and it only had 130k miles on it. It was driven by a little old lady since she had bought it new. we've never had any problems with it, at all! so cheap =/= beater, IMO... you gotta do your research beforehand dammit.

I don't like dressing newborns in anything other than simple outfits like onesies and footed pajamas. The thought of putting them in pants and a shirt with a jacket makes me cringe. Too much stuff for such a little body. I have so many outfits DS never wore for this reason.
I absolutely agree with this. I never dressed DD in much other than this and I kind of still don't. I once put jeans on her (she was probably 5 or 6 months) and promptly took them off. The button seemed to be cutting into her little tummy and the jeans just felt too stiff and uncomfortable.
Agree 110%! They always look so uncomfortable in "outfits". I would love to dress comfy all the time so why would I put my LO through the torture when everyone will think she's cute no matter what she's wearing. Like the bow below, we took it off right after this pic bc I could tell she wasn't really liking it.
I think that if you are caught texting while driving, you should have your license revoked for a period of time (not saying forever, but for even a SHORT period of time). To me, it is pretty much just as bad as drinking while driving.
I was ran off the road recently by a girl that was texting while driving. She could have killed me and my child all over a stupid text message. She could have taken two seconds to pull off the road and send the damn thing.
I Lived in Southern Alabama for 3 years, they recently made this illegal. It should be a mandatory nationwide law.

It is illegal here too. Though I think you just get a regular old ticket if caught. I wish they'd tighten it up a bit! It infuriates me.
Hey, it's cool, I can take the flaming. I am not a financial professional by any means. Maybe I am just bitter living in the land of Mercedes driving my little Nissan Versa around. I think saying I lambasted anyone is a little hyperbolic though!
I am one of those people who did not have enough of a down payment, had no credit, had lower income and bought a Nissan Versa. It is an automatic, but doesn't have power windows or doors. A year after I bought my car, they lowered the price of those models by $10,000. I don't really have a point in saying this, but I bought a new car because I was a first time driver (at 30) and was pregnant with my first child. I realize I made a mistake with my purchase, but it gave me piece of mind that I was learning to drive in a reliable car.
You would have a field day at my job. I work rent-to-own, I lease over priced items at 2-3x the items worth to people who can't afford to out right buy these things.
I drive a Nissan Versa hatchback too, I certainly get jealous that we couldn't afford the bigger SUV I wanted. And yes, lambasted was not the right word to use but people are made to feel like others are attacking their choices, no matter how financially sound. It's just not cool, man.

Because I don't have $18k sitting in my back pocket. I have about 10 grand but that's our emergency cash fund. I'd rather be able to finance and still have a large chunk in savings so if we lost our jobs we could continue to pay for our rent, cars, etc. I'd rather be able to live for a few months that way than only being able to live in our car because that's the only thing that's paid off.
See in that scenario I wouldn't consider buying an 18k car.
Well, this is why you can't judge. Sure I could have bought an $8000 beater. But I'd rather have the piece of mind of a warranty and new safety features. Side curtain airbags are kind of important to me, just like how my dealership will give me a rental if my car needs service. That's well worth it to me.

Even though I did NOT start smoking again after I had DD, I did want to. The main reason for me was I quit for the baby not for me. When she would no longer be threatened by my choice it was something I started to crave again. Like any addiction you have to want to stop for you, not anyone else.
If you have a loan for more than 3 years on a car, you are either buying too much car for your budget or you didn't save enough for the down payment. Does this make me a hypocrite? Yes, but I've learned my lesson since buying my first new car in my early 20's, and I won't make the same mistake twice.
