Because I don't have $18k sitting in my back pocket. I have about 10 grand but that's our emergency cash fund. I'd rather be able to finance and still have a large chunk in savings so if we lost our jobs we could continue to pay for our rent, cars, etc. I'd rather be able to live for a few months that way than only being able to live in our car because that's the only thing that's paid off.

See in that scenario I wouldn't consider buying an 18k car.

Well, this is why you can't judge. Sure I could have bought an $8000 beater. But I'd rather have the piece of mind of a warranty and new safety features. Side curtain airbags are kind of important to me, just like how my dealership will give me a rental if my car needs service. That's well worth it to me.

Exactly! Having a reliable car with safety features is very important to us. Why would I go out and buy a car for a couple grand, knowing you are going to have to put a couple more grand into it to fix it up and then two years down the road you are just going to have to buy a new car. I would rather spend the money, whether I finance it for 5 years or not, to have a safe car for my family.

I think both are valid points.

I think what mamafox might be trying to say is that having sex early can create an illusion of closeness that isn't actually there and that can compromise really getting to know each other on a deep level. That can come back to bite you in the arse within a marriage, or a relationship in general.

    Yes! Thanks!

Right but having sex early and having sex before marriage are totally different conversations.

But to me (and this is my unpopular opinion- obviously) they are the same.

But factually they're not.  So, they're not. It's not an opinon.  It's a fact.

I don't see how it is- you are either married and having sex or not married and having sex.  So, to me, "early sex" is all sex before marriage.

I don't think that "naturally thin" women should ever get to have big boobs, natural or fake.  You know, the type who don't really have to diet and excersize, but are still thin, just because they were born that way?  That in and of itself is unfair, so they should be flat chested to boot.  Boobs should be reserved for those of us who have to literally starve ourselves and work out daily just to be in a size 8 or 10.

I am one of those women, and being naturally thin is not all it's cracked up to be. I have been teased and ridiculed my whole life. When I was a teenager, boys actually made fun of me for not having any breasts. A lot of hurtful things have been said to me that I will never, ever be able to get over.

My breast augmentation was one of the single best things I have ever done for myself--and it made people stop with those nasty comments, for the most part.

According to the boys in my middle school class I was President of the "Itty Bitty Titty Committee"

    That shiit sucked.

And the boys who ran behind me in gym class went baboom, baboom, baboom to mock my boobs bouncing.  That *** sucked too and I cried many a tear over it.  Look, I didn't mean to piss anyone off.  It was more of a joke than anything else.  I get body issues, believe me, I do.  And, if we are being empathetic, you should also try to understand what it's like to grow up and not be thin.  I'm not one of those women who "blames my weight on metabolism" but, when you watch every calorie you intake and limit yourself to a max of 1600 per day and work out five times a week and the skinniest you are is a 10...well, that sucks too.  I am sure you have not been perfect in your lives and when you do see a curvier girl with big boobs you think...."life is not fair"....That's all I was trying to say.  Unsuccessfully, but that's it.  I'm sorry if I hurt anyone's feelings.

I have as much of a sense of humor as the next person, but I don't find weight jokes funny, whether they're against "skinny" or overweight people. These sorts of "jokes" are partly why so many people are self-conscious about their weight.

That being said, apology accepted. I'm sorry you had such terrible things said to you too.

I don't think what Anthony Weiner did was that bad.  Surprise

And the media hype surrounding it is ridiculous.  He sent nekkid pictures of himself over the internets.  The media needs to realize this shits has been going on since the 90s and is no way a new phenomenon.

And I don't think that his wife being pregnant should have any effect on the seriousness (or ridiculousness) of his actions.

As I mentioned the other day, I find it more unforgivable that he can't use twitter properly without broadcasting his junks.

I think everyone can get on board with that one.

In my personal experience, a lot of people who hem and haw and say these women should keep the child or put them up for adoption (because you know, it's really easy to carry a child for nine months and then give them away) are also the "no Skittles for poor people" variety. What I mean to say is, they want you to have the kid, but then they whine about their tax dollars going towards welfare. How else is this single mom who is struggling to get ahead supposed to live with this unexpected child she now has?

WTF? What's wrong with this picture?

Yeah, I have a friend who confronted someone who was "adamantly against abortion" by saying, "So what are you doing to help the problem? Are you speaking to teens about abstaining from sex or using protection? Are you volunteering at adoption agencies or working with girls who are dealing with unplanned pregnancy? If you're not, shut it."

Please realize though when you bring up weight and body type, you have to be ready to hear people get upset over what you may be saying. Body image is a HUGE factor for women. Some people have serious issues with the way the look, and it is a horribly sensitive subject, so it can really get people in a tizzy.

ohfuckyou. I'm not in upside down anything. We financed BOTH of our cars for 5 years. doesn't mean we did it wrong. We did it for what WE could afford. My car is the better of the 2, because I drive 30+ miles to work each way. We take my car for family gatherings. You are coming off sounding like everyone should have 8-10K in their accounts for a 'beater car'. No. That's not right. And neither are you.

You skimmed over the part where I was directly asking someone why she'd choose to finance for 5 years and then pay off in a year and a half, because it sounded like they could afford to finance less.

You seemed to miss the part that she said that way after you started. You're making it sound like it's irresponsible to finance longer, and that everyone should be able to pay in cash for things...

It is ridiculous that people think it is ok to make fun of skinny people (even in jest) but not one word can be said about fat people.

Wait...what?  Unless the car is super special (or things have radically changed in the last 2 years), everyone who has a car loan is upside down on their car loan.  Cars start depreciating the instant they drive off the lot with an owner.

Not if you made a down payment.

It's rare to be completely upside-down on a car payment but you don't have "equity" either.  The car depreciates as the loan pays down, it's usually fairly equal for a standard loan  with a standard down payment.

But if you finance $15000 at 2.9% you pay roughly $1100 in interest.  That's $18/month although you do pay off the interest in the early years so th at's just an average (not insulting YOUR intelligence...just running the numbers).

I'd say for an average American trying to be responsible but drive a safe car for their family that's worth it.

Hmmmm...that's interesting.  When I was paying off my car, I would occasionally check the Kelly Blue Book price on it and it was always listed as quite a bit under what my car loan was.

I've gathered (from my extensive MM lurking) that there are people that will buy a new car before finishing paying off their old car and roll the old debt into the new loan.

I guess it depends on the circumstances of buying the new car.  We would have had to do that if we'd decided that DH's car (which isn't paid off) was too small to haul around the girls and all their junk.

Also - The MM board drives me up the wall.  I'm not sure if that's a UO or not.

MAYBE someone works a good commute away, and needs a reliable car. Moving to said location is out of the question because of the safety of the neighborhood. MAYBE the family needs at least 1 reliable car for the family's safety. Congratulations. You are succeeding in sounding like you're better than everyone else with your money.

So are you upside down on your car loan or what?

Thank you for doing the math for me.

Whenyouseesparks: I just don't understand how you can sit there and backpedal and tell me you made that comment because of people who live beyond their means. No, you made a blanket statement about car ownership and when we try to defend our choices (which are the best for 90% of families) we're told "It's not you I"m talking about" thats BS.

I just don't get how you don't understand that buying an older, less safe, used car is preferable. Let me know how it works out when you need to get the transmission replaced and you're out a car for a week and have to pay for a rental. Then tell me what option is "cheaper". There is a high price to pay for convenience and reliability and that's OK with me.

Prior to becoming a parent I had very strong views about direct reports wanting to work from home due to childcare issues (as in no childcare was available for some reason). Becoming a parent, and having to work from home while caring for my child has solidified my views that one cannot and likely does not effectively work to their potential if they are also caring for a child at the same time.

This is not to say that working from home cannot be done, and it should be allowed if the job can be effectively performed offsite. In fact there are times when it is necessary to work offsite. It does mean that if you are allowed to work from home and there is a child present, there should be another person present and responsible for the care of that child. If there is not, it is a lose-lose for everyone involved, your child, you and your employer.

Obviously, the exception here is if you are self-employed.

100% agree.  I work from home 2 days per week and I always have my nanny here.  It's perfect.  I'm around DS, but I also get work done.  I can't stand the posts where people are looking to work from home so they can care for their child while the supposedly work.  Most employers (if they're smart) won't allow this.

Actually, I don't think that when I see a curvier girl. And who ever said the ones who responded to your comment aren't empathetic to women who are not naturally thin?

Obviously I hit a nerve.  My comment was COMPLETLY meant in jest, and there are people who thought it was funny, and people who didn't.  I am sorry if I upset you or anyone else.  It was a joke.  They don't call it UO for nothing, and if everyone got on here and said the typical unpopular opinions that are actually popular, then it would have been called a boring post.  I often forget that my sarcasm does not always translate well to the bump.

I understand if you intended to be funny but if the tables were turned, and someone wrote something awful about fat people - how do you think people would react? It is ridiculous that people think it is ok to make fun of skinny people (even in jest) but not one word can be said about fat people.

If someone said...you have big boobs so you shouldn't get to be skinny, I'd laugh it of.  If someone said...you aren't skinny so you must be lazy or blame it on the baby weight or blame it on metabolism, I'd think they were wrong.  Oh, wait...that *** HAS been said on the bump....repeatedly...and even mentioned in this post.  And people reacted to my comment the same way they react to the other comments that imply that about heavy girls.  I expected it and debated posting it, but it's an UO and it was meant to be funny, and I went for it.  I'm ballzy like that.   It's an UO, and I'm sorry if I offended you.

I think that unless the life and/or welfare of the mother is threatened, the quality of life or future quality of life of the mother or child, it is deemed medically necessary, or there was a rape involved, abortion is unacceptable. To me, the woman made her choice when she had sex. It should not be a form of birth control when a couple forgets to use protection.

No, this is not a P&R, but I am at work.

Sweet, then you're pro-choice. Glad to have you.

I was 100% pro-choice too until I got a heavy dose of "real life" knocked into me by the wonderul MSC. I no longer pass judgement.

The only thing I will say is that you're right, it should not be a form of birth control.

I'd imagine there are lots of women/girls that decide to carry a child instead of having an abortion with the intention of giving the baby up for adoption and then can't do it when the time comes.  Then they are still stuck with a baby they aren't really able to care for properly.  I think the whole "don't abort give the baby up for adoption" thing is an unrealistic solution.  I think it's a very brave, selfless thing to do, but I also think it is way more difficult than anyone that has not done it could imagine.  I, for one, don't think I could do it.

I was just graduating college, just starting a new job, had never had a car payment before so we chose to finance for longer  because I didn't want to overwhelm myself with a larger payment. My parents had always paid my car payment so I wanted to do this on my own, without my husbands help. After getting settled at my new job I realized I could pay extra so I did until it was paid off. Is there a problem with that? I think I was being responsible not taking on a larger carpayment before I knew I could handle it.

I don't want to give you a hard time, because I don't think you actually meant to do any harm with what you said. Please realize though when you bring up weight and body type, you have to be ready to hear people get upset over what you may be saying. Body image is a HUGE factor for women. Some people have serious issues with the way the look, and it is a horribly sensitive subject, so it can really get people in a tizzy.

Again, I don't think you meant to hurt anyone's feelings. No hard feelings!

    Noted.

    Thanks, I appreciate it!

You seemed to miss the part that she said that way after you started. You're making it sound like it's irresponsible to finance longer, and that everyone should be able to pay in cash for things...

I said I thought it was a waste of money. I didn't say it's irresponsible. There are a lot of scenarios where I would consider it irresponsible, but a lot of people gave some examples of how financing worked well for them. And that's cool. I wouldn't do it, but who cares, it works for them. Like I said to snoop, I don't actually care how people decide to spend their money. I will stand by the idea that if you're living paycheck to paycheck and you can't afford to put money into savings, you absolutely should not be buying a brand new car. For my own personal finances, I definitely will not finance my next car the way I did my first car. And, like I said, we make very little money in a HCOL area stretch far through meticulous budgeting. The idea that mountains of car debt are necessary for a safe & reliable car is false.

A brand new 18k car is not this "mountainous" debt you make it out to be. Why don't you walk down a used car lot and report back to me the average cost of a 4 door automatic sedan. That's a $250 a month payment. Not very much. Here's an idea. If you are talking about people who live paycheck to paycheck, say that in your OP.
