Prior to becoming a parent I had very strong views about direct reports wanting to work from home due to childcare issues (as in no childcare was available for some reason). Becoming a parent, and having to work from home while caring for my child has solidified my views that one cannot and likely does not effectively work to their potential if they are also caring for a child at the same time.

This is not to say that working from home cannot be done, and it should be allowed if the job can be effectively performed offsite. In fact there are times when it is necessary to work offsite. It does mean that if you are allowed to work from home and there is a child present, there should be another person present and responsible for the care of that child. If there is not, it is a lose-lose for everyone involved, your child, you and your employer.

Obviously, the exception here is if you are self-employed.

Perhaps it depends on the person and the job. I've been working from home since April and while it is a challenge, I'm managing fine. I don't work a typical 8-5 day though.

LOL!  Then I think there should be a reserve of guns somewhere in the event of a zombie attack that are easily accessible so we can defend ourselves.

Because I don't have $18k sitting in my back pocket. I have about 10 grand but that's our emergency cash fund. I'd rather be able to finance and still have a large chunk in savings so if we lost our jobs we could continue to pay for our rent, cars, etc. I'd rather be able to live for a few months that way than only being able to live in our car because that's the only thing that's paid off.

See in that scenario I wouldn't consider buying an 18k car.

Well, this is why you can't judge. Sure I could have bought an $8000 beater. But I'd rather have the piece of mind of a warranty and new safety features. Side curtain airbags are kind of important to me, just like how my dealership will give me a rental if my car needs service. That's well worth it to me.

Who the hell died and made you TB financial advisor? Not everyone is well off. Not everyone can afford a down payment, or outright buy a car. Maybe there are other commitments in hand. MAYBE someone works a good commute away, and needs a reliable car. Moving to said location is out of the question because of the safety of the neighborhood. MAYBE the family needs at least 1 reliable car for the family's safety. Congratulations. You are succeeding in sounding like you're better than everyone else with your money.

I don't understand why women who stopped smoking for 9  months while they were pregnant would start smoking again after they have had the baby. If you quit for that long then why would you start back?

    Because smoking is awesome.

    There. I said it.

lol I miss smoking so bad. Go to the bars, or wherever people congregate, all of the best conversations are going on outside with the smokers.

    I honestly don't get it.

In Vegas, the Casinos were full of smoke, it was awful. I just don't understand the pleasure of chain smoking.

A person that has never smoked would not understand.

And no, I don't think chain smoking is awesome, or smoking indoors. Coming home from the casino reeking of smoke is gross. Sitting outside with a beer and a cigarette is more what I miss. That's probably the addiction talking.

I just have baggage about those two things. I grew up with a smoker and I always smelled of smoke because of someone else's decisions. I hated it. HATED IT. And still hate it.

I guess my UO is that I like Oprah. I haven't watched the show in years, but I think she's a pretty cool chick. She came from practically nothing, worked her way up in TV not by being thin or pretty or artificial, but by being relatable and smart and a good business person. She defined a television genre,  built an empire and regularly gives back to communities here and abroad. She got a nation of women to turn off All My Children and pick up a book.

I feel the same way! I think Oprah is awesome!

    Having quote issues...

I am not saying pregnant girls should get married, or get married so they could have sex.  Nor am I saying divorce is 100% avoidable. And H and I have worked things out, but there was a time where I was so frustrated I just wanted to pack my sh!t.

I think people can get to know each other without some of the 'fog' that crawls over some personalities when it comes to sex.

Speaking of fog, I don't think I am very good with words so I am not sure how clear I can be. But, in a nutshell, I think pre-marital sex, or the feelings around it, hide some of the things one would notice if they waited.

Just like an absolute insistence on not getting to know about those feelings can hide some of the issues in a relationship until after you're married and it's too late...especially if you plan to stick to a marriage even if there are major issues.

I'm not saying you, I don't know YOUR marriage.  I just know that I am a bazillion percent committed to my marriage and that experiencing all aspects of our relationship before I had a ring on my finger only made me more committed to the idea of being with DH forever.  And I have seen the other side, and in my experience it was a poor choice for that situation.  Not just my own family, several occasions.

At the end of the day it's not so much whether you have sex or not IMO.  I think it's about whether you're honest with yourself and each other and communicate openly.  You can make it either way if you can do these things successfully IMO.  It's getting hung up on something as the be-all and end-all that I'm against.

I think both are valid points.

I think what mamafox might be trying to say is that having sex early can create an illusion of closeness that isn't actually there and that can compromise really getting to know each other on a deep level. That can come back to bite you in the arse within a marriage, or a relationship in general.

    Yes! Thanks!

Disagree. But I also have a view on marriage that, in general, seems unpopular.

My H was my 'first', and though leaving his lazy arse has crossed my mind I never would and never could and he will be my 'last'.

Marriage is taken too lightly anymore, and I think having sex before marriage only says "eh, it's just marriage, nothing worth saving anything for."

I have seen too many girls around here think they need to have sex with a guy to keep him, only to get pregnant and realize how worthless the guy was.  It breaks my heart and I wish I could shake some sense into them and say "if he is worth it, he will love you regardless!!"

    **steps off soapbox**

I wasn't a virgin when I married my husband but that certainly doesn't mean I take marriage lightly. And unlike you, the thought has never crossed my mind to leave my husband.

Plus interest rates are so low right now you honestly don't wind up paying that much for financing.  And I'm generally the pay-as-you-go type (I hate all debt lol).

I think it might be a tad hyperbolic to describe an 8k used car as a beater or a deathtrap. Living within your means takes many forms. Driving a modest used car is one way to do that, and it's wrong to suggest that it's somehow irresponsible or dangerous.

I think the opposite can also be valid, though.  If you wait until marriage to have sex you're putting sex up on a pedestal that not everyone can attain.

I can't imagine having sex with your husband for the first time and finding out you are in no way sexually compatible or even have adequate sexual chemistry.

If you have a loan for more than 3 years on a car, you are either buying too much car for your budget or you didn't save enough for the down payment. Does this make me a hypocrite? Yes, but I've learned my lesson since buying my first new car in my early 20's, and I won't make the same mistake twice.

I completely disagree.  You have to look at circumstances not just the length of the loan.  I can 100% afford a 2-3 year loan on my car but I was able to get a 2% interest rate on a 5 year loan and I have a lower payment.  Just because I can afford the higher payment for a shorter loan doesn't mean I want to.  I'm completely responsible with both the amount of car I bought and using financing properly.

I understand that there are a lot of irresponsible people out there, but financing is not the devil.  When used properly and responsibly it can allow much better budgeting.  We finance tons of things on 0% interest deals even though we can afford to buy them outright because it's free financing.  I think it's silly not to take advantage of it and use financing to your advantage.

Thank you.  I was jsut getting ready to write this.  DH and I usually qualify for the low, low interest rates.  Our Jeep is on a 4 year loan at 0.9%  We keep our cars until they're paid off, why would I want to spend more monthly?  Yeah, I know you spend more in interest, but at a certain point I like to free up funds.  We usually get a new car as soon as the we pay off the older one (we are caraholics and get bored with a car after 3-4 years).

I could see this being a valid point if your credit sucked and you were signing up for a 5 year loan at 11% interest.

Yes, but refraining from sex can also give you those exact same feelings. Ever held out on a guy for an extended period of time? The hormones alone can make you crazy and convince you that you're in love.

No, this is not a P&R, but I am at work.

    Ugh.

I'm right there with ya Sookie.

Some people want to have sex and/or live together before marriage. Who cares?

Some people don't want to have sex or live together before marriage. Who cares?

    Yes

I think both are valid points.

I think what mamafox might be trying to say is that having sex early can create an illusion of closeness that isn't actually there and that can compromise really getting to know each other on a deep level. That can come back to bite you in the arse within a marriage, or a relationship in general.

    Yes! Thanks!

I think the opposite can also be valid, though.  If you wait until marriage to have sex you're putting sex up on a pedestal that not everyone can attain.

I can't imagine having sex with your husband for the first time and finding out you are in no way sexually compatible or even have adequate sexual chemistry.

I completely agree with this too.

I just think having sex in a hasty way can have consequences.

And, yes, I am speaking from experience.

I don't think that "naturally thin" women should ever get to have big boobs, natural or fake.  You know, the type who don't really have to diet and excersize, but are still thin, just because they were born that way?  That in and of itself is unfair, so they should be flat chested to boot.  Boobs should be reserved for those of us who have to literally starve ourselves and work out daily just to be in a size 8 or 10.

I am one of those women, and being naturally thin is not all it's cracked up to be. I have been teased and ridiculed my whole life. When I was a teenager, boys actually made fun of me for not having any breasts. A lot of hurtful things have been said to me that I will never, ever be able to get over.

My breast augmentation was one of the single best things I have ever done for myself--and it made people stop with those nasty comments, for the most part.

According to the boys in my middle school class I was President of the "Itty Bitty Titty Committee"

    That shiit sucked.

And the boys who ran behind me in gym class went baboom, baboom, baboom to mock my boobs bouncing.  That *** sucked too and I cried many a tear over it.  Look, I didn't mean to piss anyone off.  It was more of a joke than anything else.  I get body issues, believe me, I do.  And, if we are being empathetic, you should also try to understand what it's like to grow up and not be thin.  I'm not one of those women who "blames my weight on metabolism" but, when you watch every calorie you intake and limit yourself to a max of 1600 per day and work out five times a week and the skinniest you are is a 10...well, that sucks too.  I am sure you have not been perfect in your lives and when you do see a curvier girl with big boobs you think...."life is not fair"....That's all I was trying to say.  Unsuccessfully, but that's it.  I'm sorry if I hurt anyone's feelings.

Actually, I don't think that when I see a curvier girl. And who ever said the ones who responded to your comment aren't empathetic to women who are not naturally thin?

See in that scenario I wouldn't consider buying an 18k car.

So are you upside down on your car loan or what?

ohfuckyou. I'm not in upside down anything. We financed BOTH of our cars for 5 years. doesn't mean we did it wrong. We did it for what WE could afford. My car is the better of the 2, because I drive 30+ miles to work each way. We take my car for family gatherings. You are coming off sounding like everyone should have 8-10K in their accounts for a 'beater car'. No. That's not right. And neither are you.
