3rd Trimester

Anyone else having a "big" baby?

I know the ultrasounds can sometimes be off by a bit, but I'm about 8 days over my due date and yesterday the tech said the baby is weighing in at 9 lb 13 oz.  GULP.  Ummmm...wow.  I'm scheduled for an induction on Monday (if I don't go this weekend) and the doc had me come in again today to talk thru options.  She felt that was a large baby (I'm average height/weight) and that a c-section might have to happen.

I'm going into this very open minded.  My "plan" is to go naturally/vaginally, but if any complications arise, I'm open to an epi/c-section.  My only concern is that it seems these days they jump the gun on c-sections.  I know I'm not a doctor..and I will trust I'm in good hands which I know I am - just wondering if anyone else is going thru the same thing!?

Re: Anyone else having a "big" baby?

  • I will tell you this much, my cousin had her first daughter a few years ago - she was a peanut - maybe 6.5 lbs and had a TON of complications and almost needed a c-section.  She had her second daughter almost a year a go, she was 10lb 6oz and had ZERO complications.

The weight of the baby isn't a good indication of how labor will go, it has more to do with the baby's position, where their arms are, the size of their head, etc.

Not to mention that those weight estimates can be off as much as 25% - and it seems to be more unusual when they're right.

  • Well w/ DD she was 10 days late. I started labor on my own but ended up having to be induced because I wasn't progressing. She ended up being 9lb 8oz...the doc never gave me any weight predictions prior to delivery but I would have been induced anyways had I hit 12 days late. Delivery was easy, but she did fracture her clavicle on the way out. No perm damage, we just had to keep her sleeve pinned to her onsie to prevent movement of that arm for it to heal, which it did no prob. I am just very glad the fracture didn't result in a nerve injury.
  • By the end of this weekend my doc said baby will be about 7 pounds already!  he said that i should have no issues birthing an 8.5 pound baby, and I'm already progressing pretty well.  I dont think my doc would  have let me go past my due date with an almost 10 pound baby!
  • My son was 8lbs 14 ozs 21 inches and I pushed him out in 38 minuted flat, would have been less but my contractions never were all over the place at 4-7 min apart. Anywhoo, he tore the heck out of me but he had a tiny head an shoulders so his weight wasnt really the issue. My perinatal specialist est. him at 8 1/2 lbs so he was pretty close but said the head wasnt too big so I would be fine.
