I am not going to lie; I often use politically incorrect words and/or phrases. Never in a professional setting, but I do in casual settings. Do you use politically incorrect words and/or phrases?
Do politically incorrect words and/or phrases offend you?
**** I am referring to words like gay, retarded, etc - not racial slurs.
Re: Politically Incorrect Words - Do you use them?
I fail to see how "gay" or "retard" is somehow less awful than a racial slur.
No, I would never use these words to imply something negative.
I'm not easily offended and H and I use words around the house that we don't use in public. Mostly from movie quotes etc. We don't just go around calling each other gay retards for the hell of it.
But I do tell him to stop being a Reh-tard sometimes from the movie The Hangover and stuff like that.
I am not saying it is; and, I am not saying it is ok to use any of those phrases. I was just giving an example so people did not think I was including racial slurs.
It depends on who I am with and where I am. Some people I am very careful not to offend and it goes without saying I am very conscious at work, and other's are just like me...a non p/c potty mouths...so I let it all hang out with these individuals. Not too much offends me. BUT at home it's no holds bar...my DH and I are not p/c by any means.
edited to add.
Yes but mostly in private and I am trying to get better about it.
I'm not easily offended and really the only one that bothers me is "retarded" or any variation because my 5 year old has autism.
WOOP WOOP
::bounces up and down on my labor ball with hands in air pointing down at me::
(you know like the girl on baby mama! lol)
i do! i admit it. all the time too!
edit: to incluse this statement-
i do not get offended very easily and def dont get embarrased without alot of effort from someone. iv been called heartless on NUMEROUS occasions and thats just fine with me!
I agree with this.
Also, when I hear someone say (or write) these types of words, I automatically view them as less educated or classless. Call me judgemental, but it sounds terrible.

P/c words do not bother me. However, I did not realize until recently that many people are very offended by them. Your situation is a perfect example. Def makes me think twice about some of the things I blurt out with friends.
I'm glad that you clarified what you meant. I assumed we were talking about stewardess vs. flight attendant.
While I'm not easily offended, I do not use these words. Now I'm not going to lie and say that I didn't laugh at certain parts of The Hangover, but I do get upset when people use "retard". My DH has an aunt that is mentally challenged and it just hits a nerve when people reffer to her as "retarded".
I make an effort to never use these words, I can't imagine how I would feel if my child picked that up from me! Now I just have to watch those F-U bombs!
See, I don't quite understand this thinking. I'm not attacking you, I just don't understand.
"Retarded" bothers you because your child has autism.
Well, someone else's child is gay. So clearly, any of the various "non PC" uses of that word would be hurtful to them. The same for any other slur we might be talking about here.
Just because a slur doesn't directly affect you doesn't mean you shouldn't realize how it would affect others. And that should be all the incentive necessary not to use it.
I'm not insanely sensitive or anything, but I never want to offend people at the core of who they are. I would be horrified to do so.
Well good for you.
the effed up thing is I still use the word I am just much more careful of my audience.
i mean i know im from KY and seeing that im not so PC and all but i wouldnt go as far to say that. I do get thats its your opinion though.
but not enough to not use the word myself, just be mindful of whom I am speaking with or who might over hear me.
If I'm on the phone with a friend and one of uses that word to describe something it doesn't phase me at all especially if you take into consideration the actual dictionary definition of the word.
And gay means happy lmao
Me too. There are just better ways of saying things.
This.
yea i would call you judemental. which i am also but please explain to me how someone saying "gay" or "retard" makes them "less educated" than you?
i think someone thinks her sh!t dont stink?
Hey, you asked.

Honestly, and it's a really bad habit of mine, I say "Gay!" or "That's so gay!" when something goes a way I'm not expecting it I guess. It's to the point where I don't even realize I'm saying it until I've said it.
I by no means am referring to homosexual individuals, and I don't mean it as derogatory because it's said in the tone of "Well that was unexpected!" which in the way I understand the meaning of the word "gay" in general (when not meaning happy) means "different" so maybe it makes sense? even though "homo" means "same" so it's actually the opposite... maybe I'm just rambling (I seem to be doing that a lot today).
Regardless, I am admitting to saying it. It's a problem. My bff yelled at me for it once because I said "Gay!" as an exclamation when I noticed there was no cinnamon on the table at Starbucks (or something along those lines) when I was visiting her in NY... I think it's actually regional slang maybe which is the only reason she noticed and I would think nothing of it.
One of my best friends is homosexual and has never taken offense to or mentioned at all anything when I've used it as an exclamation -- he says it too, but he's from where I'm from.
ETA: I'd also like to add that specifically the word "retard" is not always politically incorrect because it depends on context... though I think the only acceptable context to use the word in is when referring to music. NEVER would I use it in describing a person, but if I'm literally referring to something as slowed down (thing not one) then technically to say it's retarded is correct.
I try not to in any case though because most people aren't going to stop and think "oh she must mean the literal sense of the word" and will be offended.

Things to avoid during pregnancy: Eye contact with cats. Cats will suck the burgeoning life right out of you, using their infamous feline mind-powers. Avert your eyes, and move along.
FACT: 1 in 10 people are said to be a carrier of Listeria. Therefore you should avoid all shopping malls, grocery stores and busy street corners for the duration of your pregnancy. Or microwave anyone you contact until steaming, just to be safe.
I won't lie that I have used terms such as these in the past! But we don't say ANYTHING around our boys that we wouldn't want them to say in front of friends, family or random strangers. They are definitely little sponges and will repeat:) For example, we have a same sex couple as neighbors and I would NOT want my boys saying "that's gay" in front of them because they are awesome guys! I would be horrified.
I think sometimes groups of friends use different slang words or politically incorrect words and it sorta desensitizes you to what you are actually saying. So I don't judge or think badly of people who slip out something occasionally. I think it can just be from a bad habit!
It comes off that way.
If I saw someone pick their nose in public or change their baby on a restaurant table, I'd say that comes off as that person being dirty and rude.
I didn't say "less educated" than me, I just said uneducated. If your vocabularly is not wide enough to come up with a word other than "retarded", then yes, I'd say that it comes off as lacking proper education and/or class.

If you read the entire thread you would see I stated that I am not claiming it is acceptable to use those words. When I wrote those two as an example I did not really think someone would be as pretentious to have issues with it. Had I written slang for homosexuals or mental interdicts that would have included more words than I intended.
Also, rest assure I am a very intelligent person. Whether my intelligence meets your insignificant standard is of no importance.
In that case you should have made a clicky poll with "yes" or "no" as the only options. You asked a question, I provided a response.

well i pick my nose all the time so i guess that makes me dirty. oh well.
i guess your judgements make you kind of a snob huh?
and yes sweetheart you did say LESS educated which to im sure anyone else that would read it besides you means "less educated than you". which once again makes you look like a snob!
This. I don't use them at work or out in public, but at home around DH & our families we pretty much let it all hang out.
*sigh*
If this makes me a snob I guess I'm going to have to live with that.

Honestly, I find many of your replies to various posts judgmental and pretentious. It is possible to disagree or state an opinion with out being a judgmental b!tch.
Do you use politically incorrect words and/or phrases?
Occasionally.
Do politically incorrect words and/or phrases offend you?
No. At least not the ones mentioned in OP. My best friend is gay refers to things as gay on occasion. I have to say, I don't get why being gay or having a gay friend/kid/other or being directly tied to someone with mental disabilities automatically means you have to be offended by those terms. Not the case with me nor with many people I know personally. Meh.
Edited to add. They're still sensitive terms and I agree that it's immature to use sensitive terms freely just because someone is personally not offended by them. But I honestly don't think we have anyone like that here.
