Also, when I hear someone say (or write) these types of words, I automatically view them as less educated or classless. Call me judgemental, but it sounds terrible.
yea i would call you judemental. which i am also but please explain to me how someone saying "gay" or "retard" makes them "less educated" than you?
i think someone thinks her sh!t dont stink?
It comes off that way.
If I saw someone pick their nose in public or change their baby on a restaurant table, I'd say that comes off as that person being dirty and rude.
I didn't say "less educated" than me, I just said uneducated. If your vocabularly is not wide enough to come up with a word other than "retarded", then yes, I'd say that it comes off as lacking proper education and/or class.
well i pick my nose all the time so i guess that makes me dirty. oh well.
i guess your judgements make you kind of a snob huh?
and yes sweetheart you did say LESS educated which to im sure anyone else that would read it besides you means "less educated than you". which once again makes you look like a snob!
*sigh*
If this makes me a snob I guess I'm going to have to live with that.
i do not see you as a snob. I actually totally agree. If someone feels the need to use those types of words or even use swear words because they lack the ability to think of another word, then yes, i judge them.
Do you use politically incorrect words and/or phrases?
Occasionally.
Do politically incorrect words and/or phrases offend you?
No. At least not the ones mentioned in OP. My best friend is gay refers to things as gay on occasion. I have to say, I don't get why being gay or having a gay friend/kid/other or being directly tied to someone with mental disabilities automatically means you have to be offended by those terms. Not the case with me nor with many people I know personally. Meh.

i didnt say there was anything wrong with judging someone because i also stated i do the same thing about all kinds of things. BUT... there is something wrong wtih saying someone is less educated than yourself because they dont use the same vocabulary as you! and honestly to say that is very ignorant!

Yes, I did say "less educated". No, I did not say "less educated than me". You assume this is what I meant and are focusing on it. Need I mention that many of the PP's agreed with my point of view?
Obviously you've got issues with me based on my past posts/opinions. Regardless, I don't care.

no honey. as i stated in PP. you did say "less educated" which to anyone besides you would mean less than you. what else would it mean? less than what? please explain that?
and i could care less about your past post or opinions. so to say i have issues with you because of that sounds childish. we are talking about this post. just because i dont agree with this doesnt mean i wouldnt agree with something else you said?

Usually when one uses a word such as "less" it is in comparison to something. So, since you continue to say that it's no you...who are you comparing them to? Less educated than __________.

Missesru, I agree you did not say less educated than yourself. But if you did not mean less educated than yourself, who are you referring to? Less educated than whom? The average person? Society? I am not trying to be a b!!tch - I am just saying the way your post read insinuates that any person that writes or says those words is less educated than you. If you did not mean it that way, fine. I am just trying to understand what you did mean.

I call my husband gay a lot, but he's in the Navy so I kinda have to I watch what I say in public, I'm not offended easily but I know some of my friends are.

I used to until I started to actually process what I was saying. Even though those words didn't mean anything to me I had to think about how I was using them. When I would say something way gay (which I think I rarely have done) I was using it in replacement of the word stupid, same for the word retarded. This might not mean much to me but could be really hurtful to someone else. I guess as someone who really cares about womens rights I see it the same way as if men started to use the word "woman" to describe something stupid, that would be offensive to me and I would hope that the good men out there would choose not to say it because it would keep me from being hurt by their words.

COMPLETELY agree with Miss and HBB. If you can't think of better words to describe negative feelings/experiences/etc, you could use some additional education. If you don't think that words like "gay" and "retarded" are harmful, you could also use more education as it relates to the impact of language on people's lives. This subject constantly frustrates me because I feel like people are so willing to bury their heads in the sand and be like, "it doesn't affect me or anyone *I* know, so who cares if I use hurtful language."

Ditto. I'd much rather be thought of as a snob than a bigot. I really don't like a lot of these terms. I understand that people use them as slang and they slip out occasionally (I've done it in the past), but if it happens in every few sentences it drives me nuts.

I am a teacher and whenever I hear a student use these words, I tell them not to because it is offensive and hurtful to many people.
So, while I did use these words in high school, when I was less educated, I make it a point to not use them now.
I don't use words like gay and retarted, but I probably do curse too much...
