Hi,
Has anyone had the wrong gender predicted at the NT Scan? I was told I was having a girl and at yesterdays visit (17wks 4days) I asked for another U/S to confirm that it was a girl. I was shocked when we saw it was a boy! I did get my hopes up a little since we have a one year old boy and we were really only planning on having only 2 children, but of course I'm happy with a healthy baby .
Has anyone had this happen or heard of it happening?

1st pregnancy: m/c began 1/12/09 d&c 1/13/09 8wks. Baby stopped growing at about 6wks.
Delaney: Born 10/15/09
Gavin: Born 4/8/11
Baby #3: due July 10, 2014
I've heard of it happening a lot, which is why my tech just laughed at the idea of making a guess that early. It's just too hard to really tell, and I think for this exact reason, it would be better if techs just waited until the 16 or 20 weeks scans.
I'm glad the baby is healthy, and just think how much fun the brothers will have together!
I think she had the NT scan during the normal time frame and went back for another scan at 17 weeks.
This. Even at 16-17 weeks the guess could be off.

From the research that I've done usually the genders look exactly the same around 12wks. The whole angle of the dangle thing. I asked as a joke just to mess with the Tech at mine. Sadly that's one secret the baby can keep from us for quite a few weeks. That's why it's called a "prediction".
At least now you don't have to go out and buy a bunch of new little girl items
I want all boys, so we'll just see what nature has in store for me.
Ok, then I'm laughing at her. Really?? You thought at 12 weeks that you were locked in to having a girl??? At 12 weeks my kid looked like a jelly bean that wiggled slightly. How you expected to know the sex absolutely at that point is beyond me.

It was yesterday's u/s that proved the NT Scan was wrong. I'm 17 weeks now.
I know. I wish they has just said that they didn't know. The tech actually started smiling and singing the song "My Girl" as he was looking at it. Ugg....

Someone responded to your question the first time, with a link. Google is your friend.

Google told me it secretly hates her.
Well...if you had done 5 seconds worth of research, you would have known exactly what we all pointed out to you above. That the genitals look almost identical at that point and, therefore, you should know that ANY guess that early on has a 50% chance of being right.

Ok, fine. I think 'getting your hopes up' over a gender guess at an NT Scan is ridiculous. Does that make it sting less for you?
And LOL @ you calling OTHER PEOPLE ignorant.

God no. The tech told me it was an 80% chance, so I was waiting for the 20 week scan to start any planning/preparing.
My question was if anyone else had had this happen....that's all...simple. You get an F for reading comprehension. Btw, the only person I was calling ignorant on this post was you.
Wow, you must really be a joy to live with.
When I don't get breakfast in the morning, no, no I am not a joy to live with. And since NO one who responded to this post HAS had that happen to them, I'm going to go with we ALL get an F for reading comprehension ... or you get an A for stupidity. Either one works for me.
And again, you keep using the word 'ignorant' ... how am I ignorant for knowing that an NT Scan is WAY too early to confirm gender????
The Mouse ~ 06.12.08 | The Froggy ~ 02.23.11
Of course. Your tech should've told you it was no more than a guess. Ours wouldn't even give us a guess - all she said was, "They all look the same at this stage." And my NT scan was late - 13w3d.
Same thing here. The tech at our NT scan refused to even make a guess and says that she doesn't even look. We wanted to know and wanted her to make a guess, but I would never get my hopes up over a guess that was made at 12-14 weeks. I mean, in the end, even the prediction based on the 20 week anatomy scan could be wrong, kwim?
Yet again, YOU BEAT ME TO IT. Damn you, KDodge.
I wonder if OP thinks Totty is baking a future serial killer in her belly.
Actually, we had ours predicted correctly at the NT scan. It depends on how they are looking at the 'dangle' since both will have external genitals at that age. Boys are more 'up' compared to the spine, girls are even or lower to the spine.
Our peri that reviewed the scan confirmed the techs guess. They said they are accurate most of the time, but obviously not all. The later you have the scan the more accurate they are. I think my tech said she was right 85% of the time. They are a high risk group so they follow people the entire pregnancy and that's one thing they verify later.
But I'm sorry you got your hopes up.
Thank you for being understanding. I agree that there is something very sweet about 2 boys close in age
.
Here is my guess: People read your question and thought, "Well, duh. That is way too early to get a reliable prediction." Someone doesn't have to have actually gone through the experience to know that.

Yes, I have seen this site before. MANY times. Therefore, I know how EASY it would be for a tech to make a mistake. You are not helping your cause.

The techs at my OBs office will not guess at the NT Scan. They wouldn't even scan that area for me to humor me:) But I do know someone at a different practice that got a correct guess. And I'm sure wrong guesses happen all the time as well. 50/50 chance, ya know?
Congrats on your boy! This will be my 3rd so we are getting so much use out of our boy clothing and toys!!
Some offices - mine for example - also refer to it as the BUN screening.
I had mine at 14 weeks (it was the last day I was able to have the scan done), and I go to a specialty clinic with way better ultrasound technology with extremely experienced techs and they still didn't even give me a guess. I was hoping for a guess, just for the fun of it, but I'm so glad that I didn't get one. It wasn't that hard to wait the additional 4 weeks and it would have been overly emotional if I would have gotten an incorrect guess.
I'm sorry that you are a little disappointed. I'm excited that you'll be having another little boy though!
