Mother's Milk Tea and Fenugreek Capsule Questions

Where can you buy these

Also, I've read that a lot of nursing moms use these to help their supply.  Is this something I should have on hand in advance?

Is this something that you recommend taking anyway?  Do you start taking it after the babies arrive?

Re: Mother's Milk Tea and Fenugreek Capsule Questions

  • You wont know what your supply is going to be like until the babies are here and you start pumping/nursing.  My twins were early and in the NICU I couldn't start nursing them consistently right away.  Even when they did start nursing, they didn't really get the hang of it until they reached their due date.  All of these factors (and infertility issues) contributed to my low supply. I used both the tea and Mother's Milk Plus (tincture) which is a supplement that contains fenugreek among other things.  Neither of which helped.  I would suggest you wait until they are here and see how things go before you spend your money.  When you're ready, I found them at Whole Foods and I think you could get them at any herbal/supplement store (like GNC).

  • I used fenugreek, but didn't start until after the boys were born. I had to run out and buy it when they were a few days old so it totally would have been better to have it on-hand before hand. It did help my supply when I was on it.

  • I bought it at a health foods store but it never seemed to work
  • i buy mother's milk tea at whole foods and i order fenugreek online because its super cheap - swansons brand, $2.

do they work? no idea, i have been using  both since the babies were born.  but i figure there is no reason to stop and find out.

  • My supply was pretty good (3-4 oz each time I pumped) when my twins were in the NICU because I had plenty of time to pump, and I breastfed them each once per day.  Once they both came home my supply decreased dramatically because I stopped having time to pump and when they both want to eat at the same time breastfeeding is out unless you can get the hang of tandem feeding (I really couldn't- I use bottles when I have to feed 2 at once). Anyway, that's when I bought fenugreek capsules and mothers milk tea (both on amazon.com). I saw an improvement, not sure from which one. I take the fenugreek more consistently than the tea though (2 capsules 2-3 times daily). My supply still isn't what it was, but I'm onlyl pumping 3-4 times per day now, and not at all overnight so I'm just glad I'm still lactating. I try to breastfeed when I can but it's hard. I nurse each twin about once per day if I get a chance when the other is sleeping. So now I'm getting around 2 oz when I pump which isn't a lot but before I started the fenugreek it was even less than that. (obviously I'm giving them formula too, lol).  Sidenote- I think that the fenugreek is making me smell bad, kind of like maple syrup, but also my deodorant fails every day now and I didn't used to have  issues with body odor. sorry if that's TMI but I thought you should be warned. Also, I heard other people say that it made them smell like maple syrup.

  • I take 4 pills 4x per day (of the 610mg...careful because they do sell 1220mg too) at the advice of a LC.  I am able to pump 60-70oz per day for my girls.  I drink the tea too occasionally because I like it.  Buy the stuff online, have some on hand and don't start taking Fenugreek until after your babies are born as it is a uterine stimulant and can cause contractions (or so I read on KellyMom).  I love that I am able to exclusively pump feed and make plenty for the girls.  Side effect:  It makes you smell like maple syrup.  I guess there are worse smells.
