gift/care package help

so a very good friend of ours is leaving this weekend to hike the Appalachian Trail for six months.  there are a couple of things we'd like to do.  one, we'd like to get him a gift before he leaves from the boys.  two, you can send care packages to his future check-in sites and we're definitely going to send a few.  But I'm looking for an idea of something that would be cute from the boys.  I've already got the basics that we'll be sending him (socks, undies, snacks, etc) but looking for something that might be sweet to open after you've been hiking in the woods for several months.  the only other thing is that he obviously has to carry anything he receives (or throw it away) so it has to be very light weight.  just looking for some small creative ideas!

    a really nice swiss army knife, some pocket games (connect four, uno, checkers), yummy protein/candy bars, or his favorite candy, small journal, toss-away camera, pictures of the boys.

    DH has done parts of the AT over the years. Maybe hand/foot warmers, water purification tablets, lambs wool (for toes). DH LOVES beef jerky.
