Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Anyone give their 8-month old yogurt?

A friend of mine said she gave her DD baby yogurt when she was 8 months old.  I haven't even looked into it yet, so I don't know what the suggested age is.  I thought babies weren't supposed to get milk until 1 year.  I know yogurt isn't milk but it's dairy.  Am I totally overthinking this?

  • Our pedi gave the okay at 6 months.  I know some pedi's like to wait, especially if a LO has problems with dairy.

And it's no milk not dairy.  It's so you don't replace the BM/Formula.

  • We started yogurt around 7 months. I would pour it in ice trays and freeze it then cut it up for her when she was teething
  • we started yogurt at 6 months (never had any probs) and she still loooves it!  We do yobaby and plain greek yogurt (fage) with mashed up fruit (banana is her fav).

  • we started right around 8th months
  • Our pedi said no, but he is really conservative.  I gave it to DS and at 8 months and he loves it.  I brought it up to my pedi again and he said it is just a precautionary measure for milk allergies.

  • I gave Yo Baby yogurt to my DS at 6 months old because he was on an antibiotic for pneumonia and I knew that the probiotics in it would help keep the possible side effect of diarrhea in check.  He loves it.b

  • We started yogurt around 7 months and cheese around 9 months.  The "milk before 1 year" issue isn't about dairy, it's about replacing BM/Formula with milk.  They say not to give milk at all before 1 year because they are worried that some people will realize that their LO likes milk and that milk is a lot cheaper so they will switch, but babies need the nutrients in BM/formula until at least 1 year.  But dairy products, in general, are usually fine.

  • I thought the same thing as you. But, pedi ok'd it at 7 mo.

He likes it okay. I get the plain Dannon full fat yogurt and mix with a fruit puree in the morning.
