2nd Trimester

Still haven't gained a pound...Normal?

I'm still at my pre-pg weight and haven't gained anything. I lost some weight in my first tri but only about 5lbs or so. When does the weight gain really kick in? Is it normal to not have gained anything so far? When I had my 12wk appt, the doc said I could only gain 10lbs but if I'm eating healthy then she isn't too concerned. Would you be worried though?

  • What? Your Dr. told you that you "could only gain 10lbs"? That sounds crazy to me.

I've only gained a few pounds, and my Dr. isn't concerned, but she also would never say something like "you can ONLY gain...." This just doesn't sound right at all.

  • I have gained 9 already.  But I have a friend who is 20+ wks and is still under 3 lbs and baby is growing great.

I think she meant it in the way that if I "end up" only gaining a little bit of weight it would be okay as long as baby looks good and I'm eating healthy. I don't think she was restricting me in any way :o)

Really? But even if someone is overweight, 10lbs just sounds really low... aren't most babies themselves between 7-8? I guess I'm just clueless.

  • Not all women gain weight at the same time.  I tend to gain a little throughout each trimester in previous pregnancies.  This time around I gained it all in the beginning of second tri.  My friend didn't gain anything/look pregnant until about 8months.  Why did your OB say only10 lbs?  Most women gain 20-40lbs in a normal healthy pregnancy, so unless there was weight concern before pregnancy you shouldn't sweat gaining at all.

I don't quite understand it either, but my pre-pg weight is 180 and my goal is to stay under 200, so that is 20lbs. I would be okay with that.

  • I first started gaining in my 16th week. Embarrassingly, it hasn't slowed since. I am now up 15lbs from my pre-pregnancy weight.

  • I haven't gained yet and didn't the first time around either.  I am pretty small to start with but get pretty sick in the first tri.

I believe she was using 10 as an example. She honestly doesn't seem as concerned about my weight as I am.

  • My weight has been consistent throughout so far so the dr today said he wasn't worried as long as I was eating healthy.  I wouldn't worry too much - I lost weight in 1st tri as well, but overall haven't gained much of anything yet.

  • My weight gain has been very gradual.  At my appt today I was finally to a total of 8lb gained.  At my 18w appt I had only gained 3 lbs, but the u/s showed a healthy baby so that put the docs mind at ease.  She said as long as the baby is growing at the right speed then she is fine with it.

  • I am a couple of weeks ahead of you and I haven't gained a pound. I asked my Dr. about it on Tuesday and she said that if I still haven't gained anything by 20 weeks then we would start to talk about it but not to worry about it yet.

I didn't take it personally :) I wasn't very clear in my original post either so I see where the confusion came from.

  • I lost weight in the beginning too and have gained like maybe 2 lbs of it back...its normal, everyone gains weight at different times during pregnancy
  • I lost about 8 in 1st tri but I am only up 9 from pre-pg weight. I didn't really gain any weight until 19-20wks.

  • With Jack, I didn't gain any weight or show until 20+ weeks.

lol, this time I'm already up 9 pounds!

  • I am just starting to gain now.  I am still down overall from my very first appt but I think I gained 2 pounds since my last appt in Oct.  I lost a lot in the beginning due to food aversions/nausea.

both my GP (w/a specialty in bariatric medicine) and my OB tole me to only gain 10 lbs. i'm not saying the OP has a long-time weight issue, like i do. but it is perfectly okay for a larger woman to not gain the weight that the average or smaller sized woman gains during pregnancy. in fact it is healthier for the baby if i am not gaining like the average or smaller sized woman.

  • WOW, to only gaining 1 lb for some of you :) I know it depends on your pre-pregnancy weight.  I have gained a total of 27lbs so far.  My doctor says I am completely normal and shouldn't worry.  I thought it was a lot but apparently not.  I weighed 135-140 pre pregnancy.  Not sure if that helps anyone?
  • I'm 17 wks. and have maybe gained three pounds (it varies, but that's the highest weight I've had on the scale.) It's hard ot to worry, but my doctor said not to as long as your healthy and the baby is growing. I figure the weight will come in a big way before I know it-- so there's no need to worry! Remember, the baby is only gonna be 8 pounds. There's no reason to force feed yourself because too much weight isn't healthy for the baby either.
  • I am still down 10-12 pounds overall. My dr hasn't been concerned and the baby was a normal size on the ultrasound. Dr said usually after week 20 is when weight gain accelerates.

I worry about it to but try not to. Just eat healthy! Big Smile

  • I wouldn't worry.  I didn't gain anything until week 18 and I'm now 22 weeks and have only gained a total of 5 pounds.  For me, I stopped exercising as much when I became pregnant and I think the first trimester my muscle was turning into fat (which weighs less than muscle).  Now that I've lost all my muscle weight and have some extra fat packed on Tongue Tied the scale is finally starting to show the gain.  This is my theory anyway.  I wouldn't worry, it will come.

I just wanted to say I LOVE the name Carter James. We are definitely using James for a middle name and I was tossing around the idea of Carter for a first name, I think it's such a good combo!

  • Ok, so this is what I was told.... the heavier you are the less weight you should/need to gain. The smaller you are or if  you are having multiples than you need to gain more weight. I weighed 104 lbs and have gained 12 lbs so far. It was recommended for me to gain between 25-35 lbs. My midwife told me that they like to see women in my BMI to gain 10 lbs before 24 weeks and then a 1 lb a week after that.
