GAH! Elimination diet for a week (at least)!

The NP agreed with me that it sounds a lot like Ariel is dealing with reflux. But she wants to put me on an elimination diet of no dairy, eggs or peanut butter for a week to see if that helps first. I approve of the let's not medicate immediately aspect but what am I going to eat?! And what will I do if it is related to food and isn't just one but multiple?! That's like my whole diet! I didn't get breakfast this morning because they got me an immediate appointment and now I'm sitting here thinking of things to eat that I can't have any of!

And am I a freak of nature or something? She asked me how many eggs I eat in a week and I told her 6 (it's likely this number is low too). I honestly grew a third head at that moment. You'd have thought I pulled out a cloth diaper the way she looked at me! I guess I eat more eggs than the average person.

  • At least she didn't cut out wheat as well!  Good luck!

Oh and I would totally eat eggs in some format (on a sandwich, in pancakes, scrambled, etc) every day if I could, but I have high cholesterol :(

  • Not fun! Crying

Soooo... oatmeal with honey/maple syrup and fruit for breakfast. Yeast breads (should be able to find some without dairy, I think)- what about other nut butters? Almond, cashew, sunflower?

  • ((hugs))  I had to do the same for Ethan and while it was hard the first couple of weeks, I got used to it.  I ate a lot of Luna bars, bean burritos with rice (Amy's), salads with grilled chicken, sweet potatoes, steamed veggies, etc.

The good thing about it was that I dropped the baby weight really quickly and my cholesterol is super low because of not eating dairy.  There's a website - godairyfree.org that has great suggestions too.

Let me know if you need any specific suggestions for meals, I'd be happy to help!  Good luck!

ETA:  Sunbutter is a great substitute for pb, Earth Balance for butter and if you're craving ice cream, Purely Decadent soy ice cream rocks!

  • Considering I have eggs almost exclusively on weekends, and sometimes one during the week, I easily eat 5-6 eggs in a week.

Oatmeal is great for breakfast - we do it with some brown sugar, raisins and cinnamon.  It's also good with cut up apples, nuts and some nutmeg.

  • ah, that is so rough! I had to do it for awhile too, and being a vegetarian, it was very difficult. I actually never tried to give up eggs, but I did give up dairy for 2 weeks, then soy for a week. Neither made a difference in our case. What i did find very quickly was giving up chocolate, caffeine, and any fried or spicy foods made a tremendous difference for DS. Also, anything too acidic such as tomato sauces, I could only have in limited amounts. Luckily, I also found I could eat beans in moderate amounts, just not like 4 servings a day. Oddly enough, I could have a PB&J sandwich, but if i tried to have a handful of actual peanuts, he would puke within minutes of nursing.

If you can't do everything at once, then do 10 days without dairy, then 10 days without soy, 10 without eggs, etc.  Or maybe cut the list in half and do each for 10 days. I know dairy takes a long time to leave your system, so do give it over a full week before you try to draw conclusions.

Good luck, and I hope you find a resolution soon.

Dairy can take up to 3 weeks to leave your system, so I would at least try it for 2 to see results.  I saw results within a week but I was eating a ton of dairy!

  • DS teacher last year had a soon with horrible reflux, even had a reflux bed? Well she said that it can take up to 3wks for dairy to get out of the system.

For dd I have given up; milk, ice cream, 3/4 cheese intake, broccoli, shrimp, Indian butter chicken, and probably a few other things that go along like cereal and such.

The other day I had 2 gulps of milk and she was screaming in pain.

  • Thanks ladies. The plan is to start with this for a week. If there's absolutely no difference in how she's behaving or if it gets really bad before then to the point where she's miserable then I'm supposed to start her on a prescription that she gave me but continue the elimination diet. Assuming that one of those works, I'm then going to slowly reintroduce the eliminated foods to see if her symptoms come back or get worse.
