Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

how long does spontaneous m/c take?

Hi there-- I was just wondering whether anyone could tell me how long a m/c lasts?  We had our first u/s monday, received a poor prognosis (i should have been measuring at 8 wks, msrd at 5) and this morning I started bleeding and cramping, and am officially m/c.... I was just wondering how long until the bleeding and cramping is over?  It was spontaneous, happened naturally, and like I said, it was early in the preg......i just want to know how to prepare-- it's like a bad period right now, but advil not helping as it normally does and I think i need to leave work for the day...... just want some advice. thanks.

  • I am in the same boat as you. I started very lightly spotting on Sat. and yesterday was more like a regular period but today is much worse. I have to go in today for an u/s to make sure everything is going the way it is suppose to go. I am hoping they say everything is almost gone but who knows.

  • I first want to say I am so sorry for your loss.  I did not have a natural m/c, so I don't really have an answer.  I know it really differs person to person.  Can you call your doctor and ask for a prescription pain reliever?  It may be useful for the next couple days.  If I was you, and I could leave work, I would.  You shouldn't have to go through this there.  Take even a couple days off if you can.  My thoughts are with you today.

  • I'm so sorry for your loss... As for how long this process could take - its really just different for everyone. You may get through the horrible cramps and passing of stuff in just a few hours, or it could take a couple of days. If you have already started cramping and bleeding... I would really suggest going home for today AND tomorrow. Tylenol, advil, ibuprofen - none of them helped my cramping. If it gets too much, don't hesitate to call your dr. In fact, I'd go ahead and call and get an rx called in anyway, because then you'd have the pills ready if you need them. Once you've passed everything, the cramps should subside substantially, and then you'll probably just have AF-like bleeding for a while. I hope this helps.

  • My first preg was a miscarrage and I  was also at "8 weeks" once I started spotting and cramping I went into a labor of sorts  that started on a friday night and ended on a saturday morning after I passed the baby. I spotted for a little bit the rest of the week.
  • Sorry you are having to go through this. I am in the exact same stage as your right now and am curious to see how this will work out too.

    You're in my thoughts.

  • Hey there-- thanks for all the nice notes-- I did end up going home yesterday-- it was just too much pain and advil wasn't working.  I passed a lot of stuff yesterday, and now it's very AF like, but heavy, with a lot of other symptoms (mostly intestinal, dr said that's normal) tied to it, keeping me up at night.  Anyway, I returned to work today, although i'm not done obviously, but i just have that kind of job/office, and I'm also out of sick days (had horrible flu last february and spent 1wk in bed)... anyway, I am in touch with the dr, she's going to see if i should get something else to help with all of it...... thanks for your thoughts and advice.  Fort the physical pain i'm finding hot water bottles and drinking hot water are both helpful... just an fyi to those others in the same boat.  Overall though, this really sucks.
  • sorry about you loss. I'm waiting for a miscarriage myself. :(
