My girls were born at 31w (i can't make my ticker update) and are now 34 w. they were both doing really well and were moved out of nicu into continuing care of Christmas eve. On Christmas day, Emma was having a LOT of episodes and that night they moved her back to the nicu, started antibiotics, and put her on a ventilator so she could rest. The first culture came back positive for some kind of staph (i don't remember what kind) but she seemed to be improving...she was not lethargic and was actually fightjng the vent ao hard they had to sedate her. they have been saying she is stable and nk longer appears to be sick. they took her off the vent and she is nkw on cpap. The dr called me this morning tk tell me that the second culture also came back positive, ao they will be taking out her picc line and repeating the culture, which should hopefully be negative (and ck tinue her abx for 8-10 more days). he did not sound like he thought it would be poaitive, but did say we would cross that bridge when we came to it.
?
i don't quite understand how she is improving yet ghe cultures are positive. i have been avoiding google and was hoping someone could explain it in a not scary manner. she is back up to half feeds. what happens wjthout the picc line
Re: infection :(
yes...from what i can gather, they think it may be from the picc line. In the meantime they have an iv in her foot. They also moved her back up to the intermediate nursery and took her off the cpap, so she is doing well. I asked what they will do regarding the line and the answer was kind of unclear because it depends on how the iv(s) holds up, how long she needs tk be on the antibiotics, etc....
