3rd Trimester

34 weeks and measuring small?

I just had my 34 week appt today and when my doc measured my belly she told me that I am only at 32cm so she is having me schedule an ultrasound to check on the actual measurements of the baby.

She told me not to worry, but of course i'm worrying. Has anyone else been in this boat, and had the ultrasound show that everything was good to go?

  • Yes, I was measuring the same at my 34 week ultrasound. My doctor said measuring +- two weeks is normal and not to worry. My baby girl is developing just fine. She's just presumably a little bit smaller than average.

  • Me! baby was measuring a little small [13%, they really start to worry when it's less than 10%] at my ultrasound. They had me come in for nonstress tests 2x a week just to make sure that the baby had good movement and heartrate. They did a follow up ultrasound a few later and she was still small, but the % was a little bit higher. She came out 7lbs1oz at birth [40w1d] which is average =) GL, I wouldn't worry! 2cm off isn't that bad

  • With my last pregnancy I measured small.  I got several ultrasounds and was always told I was probably going to have a small baby bc I was measuring about a week and a half behind my EDD.  DS was born at 41 weeks completely fine and 7.7lbs which is average.

  • Yes, this exact thing happened to me ... doc said that I measured small and I was nervous leaving the doctor's office for the ultrasound ... only to have the ultrasound show that baby was ABOVE average (60th percentile) size for where I am supposed to be?!  Sometimes those doctors with their tape measures don't know everything, I suppose!
  • Yep....this happened to me at 34 weeks also.  I had always measured 1-2 weeks behind, so my doc just wanted to make sure baby was on target and my fluid levels were good.

She actually measured BIG at the ultrasound....5 pounds 14 ounces...70% percentile.

Dont worry....it will be fine :)

Externally I've measured 3-4 weeks behind with all my pregnancies and had u/s around 36 weeks to check size.  Babies measurements have always been fine and my kids were right at 7lb.

  • I just went through this at my last few appts.  At 34 weeks I was measuring 32, and the doc said he wasn't worried about it (and my chart showed that at least a few other times I had measured a little small).  Then at my 36 week appt. I hadn't changed at all and was still measuring 32.  So he decided to do an U/S, needless to say I was freaking out the whole time waiting for the U/S.  Turns out baby was measuring at exactly 36 weeks and fluid levels were great.  So it's just me who's measuring small!  Turned out to be a lot of anxiety for nothing, but I guess it was better to do the U/S and make sure.
  • With my last one, they said he was too small at 32 weeks and diagnosed him with IUGR...i was devastated!  we had to go every 2-3 days for nst's...he was born 6 lbs 3 oz...completely fine and perfectly healthy!  undue stress!  sometimes ultrasounds and doctors over analyze.  i am sure you are great!  goodluck!

I will be 34 weeks Friday and measure 31 1/2 cm today, but I was 32 cm at my appointment 2 weeks ago.  Have to schedule an ultrasound tomorrow when the imaging office opens (my doctor doesn't do them).  My doctor was very calm about it, so hopefully there isn't an issue.
