The Great Big Giant Question Thread!

Re: The Great Big Giant Question Thread!

  • @bre2022 YES. uncooked rice in a sock and pop it in the microwave. If you don’t like the smell you can add essential oils

  • I’ve seen a few posts in here about hip pain. I have a big body pillow that is kind of flat and just isn’t comfortable. I’ve added an additional pillow between my legs but it isn’t helping. My left hip has a sharp pain when I get up in the middle of the night that sometimes keeps me up. The pain lasts for a majority of the morning too. I had hip surgery for an impingement back in 2012 on that joint so I’m sure the baby is triggering some wear and tear pain. If anyone has any helpful tips, I’d greatly appreciate it!
  • @wigglyicecream @bre2022 rice socks are life! We microwave ours for 2 minutes but that may have to be adjusted depending on the strength of the microwave.
  • @wigglyicecream @bre2022 @wisewitch222 that is definitely what I did all day yesterday, except I have these silly stuffed animal heating pads that people got me. The llama one is somewhat uncomfortable, but I was able to take the bean bag thing out of it and just microwaved it for 2 minutes throughout the day to help with a stiff neck. I woke up yesterday and it was so painful to move my neck, but thankfully was able to work from home.
  • Has anyone flown at 15 weeks? heading to Florida tomorrow just wondering if you had any surprise Nausea or anything. I'm normally a good flyer just getting a little nervous.
  • @mrsmeg72 I've had some aches and pains when sleeping or sudden movements in the middle of the night. I actually ended up getting a pregnancy safe cream that helps ease those pains. I found I've woken up less with aches since using it. I also use it on my left knee whenever it starts to flare up (from an old pre-pregnancy injury) and it really does help with the pain.

  • @Katek819 I’ve flown several times throughout my pregnancy with my two oldest; I did have some nausea but I typically have nausea through 17-19 weeks. I always ask my doc for Zofran before traveling just because I know I am much more prone to motion sickness while pregnant as well. I hope you have a smooth flight with no issues!
  • @Katek819 I am flying next week to Europe and my midwife told me to walk as much as I can in the plane and move my feet and legs. Also make sure you can get up easily to go to the bathroom.

    Hello All -

Currently 15 weeks and 1 day, though baby is measuring a week ahead. I’ve been feeling quick, sharp pains in my lower abdomen and I’m wondering if it’s the baby moving or round ligament pain? I had round ligament pain in the first trimester, but it was typically confined to one side. These pains are all over the place lol. Any insights?

Also, sorry for the multiple posts, but I need some reassurance here. I am currently 15 weeks and 1 day pregnant. A couple of weeks ago (around 13.5 weeks) I slipped and fell on ice on my side. I’m fine, but naturally was concerned about baby. I tried to use an at-home doppler for the first time shortly after and couldn’t find a heartbeat. I admittedly only tried for about a minute or so. I’m trying not to freak out, as I know logically everything is likely ok, but just wanted to see if anyone has had a similar experience of not being able to find heartbeat at home but then everything being fine?

@knottie In regards to your second post, it's always good to talk to a medical professional or someone that can assist you better than we can. Someone could have a fall and everything be okay, while others would have a different story. I have an anterior placenta, which creates another layer between the outside of my stomach and baby, so the heartrate is difficult to find on a doppler, but easy to find using an ultrasound. I would definitely contact your doctor to help answer your questions both about your pains and your fall. They will be able to give great advice or even ask you to come in to check.

Also, if you haven't already, we would love to get to know you better by you introducing yourself in the introduction thread and if you could change your user name to help make it easier to tag you, that would be helpful as well! All of that information is under the post "Read before posting" thread.

ETA: to fix my grammar *facepalm*
  • Thanks @brittanynmorris. I called the midwives and talked to one of the nurses, who reassured me that the baby is well-cushioned and that at-home fetal dopplers cannot always be trusted this early. It made me feel slightly better, but honestly I’ll probably be anxious until my next appointment in two weeks.

By the way, I changed my username to be something easier to tag, but I’m not sure why it isn’t showing up in the comments
  • @knottie you may have to log out and back in a few times on the app. It’s super annoying, I know.
  • @knottie I'm glad to hear they gave you some reassurance! While it's not fun, anxiety is super normal and hopefully in a few weeks you'll have even more reassurance. It's always good news to me when they say I don't have to come in urgently.

@Katek819 I flew at 15 and 16 weeks. Before the flight I was feeling pretty much normal again, but got nauseous on both flights. The first flight had a ton of turbulence and it gave me super bad nausea and the second I got nauseous without turbulence but it was relatively minor. It was also a cross country flight and both times were towards the end of the flights. Fingers crossed for you that you don’t!

I just flew yesterday (to FL from NY direct flight) at 16+6 and felt almost better than normal. I did maybe have a little bit of gas build up during the flight but didn’t have any issues after we landed. Are you finally getting to go to Universal?

edit to add, I flew with ds2 at 15 weeks and maybe got a little dizzy on that flight but that’s not totally abnormal for me.
  • darkrose88 thank you!!! I’m going to order that cream!
  • @mrsmeg72 hopefully it helps you!
  • The flight conversations are helpful. I’m flying between 15-17 Weeks and normally don’t have motion sickness. Everything is different pregnant!😅 I’m going to keep the Zofran close!

@arksha14 sounds like round ligament pain, it can be quite sudden and intense when you stand from sitting or change positions quickly. And there are gonna be lots of changes and muscle pains around tummy, butt, and back throughout the rest of the pregnancy. Also, regarding slipping on ice, your baby is surrounded by lots and lots of protective padding. Fluid and fat and layers of skin. I'm sure everything is fine. Talk to your doc but unless you slammed something into your lower abdomen, I wouldn't be too worried.

    QUESTION for C-Section Mamas

So, my only experience with a c-section is with my 23 weeker and she was whisked right to the NICU, so I don't know what to expect with a healthy baby.

With DD2, she was taken to the NICU (I didn't even get to see her) and I was stitched up, then taken to a recovery area for them to monitor me for like 30 minutes, and then back to my room. I didn't see DD2 until hours later when they wheeled my bed into her NICU room. Then again 24 hours later when I could hobble to a wheelchair.

SO....do they give you baby immediately after they clean him? I assume I'm being stitched up while they clean him up. Then, will I be transferred to a new bed to roll to a recovery room again and then my room? Will I be holding baby boy while this happens or will he be walked there by a nurse? My husband? I have no idea what so expect to all details are appreciated.
  • @starkette thanks for asking this. I’ve been wondering the same thing. I’ve only experienced my vaginal birth. So following for answers
  • @starkette great question!
For both of my c-sections it was the same after. Right after birth they showed me my girls, around the curtain then cleaned/weighed them while they stitched me up. I was given both girls before leaving the OR. I was able to hold them while I was wheeled to the room and kept them until the nurses needed her for sound tests later.
I can’t remember if I went to my room or a recovery room but DH was with me both times.

With this Doctor (I switched providers this pregnancy) I asked him what he normally does. The procedure was the same. He gave me the option of the drape with the square cut out so they can put baby through so I can see. He also said there’s apparently a mirror above so I can watch the whole thing if I want to 🤢. No thanks.
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • @starkette I was given my baby right away. I was nervous to hold her bc after the surgery my whole body was shaking, either from trauma or the drugs. But I calmed down. They actually told me I had to carry here when I asked (I was nervous about dropping her) so I think it is par for the course if you are awake and baby is okay.
  • Thanks so much for the reassurance @starkette! I’ve had a pretty smooth pregnancy so far but struggling a lot with anxiety. It’s nice to have a support group here!
  • @buffythevampireslayer did you have uncontrollable shakes? That’s actually a side effect from getting an epidural. I got them with DD1, it was crazy.
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • I also had uncontrollable shakes from the epidural. DH just kept trying to pile blankets on me and the nurses kept having to tell him, she’s not cold it’s just a side effect of the epidural haha.
  • best ways to still get a good workout in, 18 weeks 1 day with twins and it’s definitely getting harder. Anyone have any suggestions on how to still get a good workout in?
  • @dimeadozen @twizzleraddict1 omg yes! I didn’t know that was what it was. They may have told me but I forgot by now. But yes it was super weird and now I don’t even remember when they stopped.
  • @buffythevampireslayer it was extremely bizarre! I would try to stop and my neck/muscles would get tired from trying. DH recorded the moment they gave me DD and it was pitiful watching. I don’t think I got them for DD2

Are there any tall mamas who haven’t really “bumped” yet? I’m 5’9, 122lbs pre-pregnancy, 125lbs currently at 16w4d and I still have no bump 🥺 I do have a long torso but I just looks like I ate a big meal. It’s my first pregnancy so I understand it can take longer to show. And if it weren’t for my triple sized tata’s and a successful ultrasound Friday, I wouldn’t believe I was pregnant! I guess I just have more room upward for this little cutie to roam ✨
  • ced45ced45 member
@ashamarie2 im DEF not tall 🤣 (5'2") but also first pregnancy and im jussssssst starting to show now at 18 weeks. From what ive heard folks with long torsos take even longer to show because there's more upward mobility lol. So Im not surprised from everything you described!
  • Hi everyone!

This is my first time posting and I’m here with a question/ concern.
First of all I’m 18 weeks pregnant!

I had a really strenuous weekend at work and am scared I over worked myself. Has anyone else found themselves in this situation? I was on my feet for 12 hours two days in a row and 16 the 3rd day. Got some sun but made sure to hydrate and eat. Didn’t do any lifting but when I saw how many miles I covered on my steps app today I about fainted. I know I pushed it too far and am so worried about baby and can’t wait to get to the doc in a couple days.

Anyone experience a similar situation in this or past pregnancy with strenuous work environment?
  • @ellam231 I can’t speak to your concern directly, but my best friend has a very stressful job that required her to be on her feet all day for 12 hours every day during her pregnancy and she now has a perfectly healthy baby girl. I don’t think one day (or even a few) of pushing it will have any impact on your baby. I do understand your concern though, as I’ve taken a few hikes recently that were really way too strenuous for what I should be doing at this stage.

Curious to hear what the doc says, but I wouldn’t be too concerned.
  • @paytonpedro
yes! we just got back yesterday. We had a great time. I couldn't do any rides but seeing my son talk to Spiderman and the rest of his heroes was way worth it. Plus got some time in the pool. Flight was pretty good. Just a little bit of swelling on my feet on the way home.
  • @ellam231 I don't think you have too much to worry about, lots of women work throughout their pregnancies. I'm sure your doc will be reassuring, too, and give you things to look out for in the future (just in case).
  • @katek819 I’m so glad you had a good time despite not being able to do any rides. Seeing my boys have a good time and be excited is almost more fun than doing it myself!

@ellam231 I just did Disney for a week, I was in the sun all day and on my feet all day, walking 5-7+ miles per day. I had my AS yesterday and baby is perfectly fine. So while it’s not work, it was strenuous in its own right. I’m sure your fine.

I tried to search around the thread to see if anyone has answered this, but it's a lot and I'm super stressed out so I'm very sorry if this is a repeat...

What are peoples' experience with changing OBs mid-pregnancy? My insurance changed with my new job and my current OB isn't in-network now. I thought about just dealing with the out-of-network costs because I was really enjoying my time with her, but I have no idea how much it would end up costing me in the end. :( I found a new Midwife to meet with next month, really hoping it works out.
  • @bunnywashere I haven’t experienced this personally, but in the case of my last pregnancy and this one, I’ve been at a practice where I’ve been seen by multiple OBs. I prefer this because I couldn’t guarantee who would actually deliver my baby and my first labor was 38 hrs anyway so I cycled through multiple. In my experience most of my time was spent with the nurses in labor anyway. So my guess is the change won’t be too significant especially this early on. I am getting a doula for this go around to provide some continuity throughout my labor. Good luck and I hope you like the new midwife!
  • Am I the only person who feels like their pregnancy pillow is hurting their hips and back?

I can’t find any info about this anywhere so I’m hoping someone can help somehow! This is my first pregnancy so all of this is new to me and sometimes it’s hard to tell what’s a rule you absolutely have to follow vs it’s just a recommendation. This week in the app it says you have to start sleeping on your side and avoid sleeping on your back. So I bought a pregnancy pillow and immediately starting having terrible hip and back pain when using it. I’ve tried multiple positions but always end up waking up in so much pain that I didn’t have before.

I’m typically a left-side and back sleeper anyway but I’m scared to sleep on my back now and I think my pillow is causing me pain. I can’t get a good nights sleep. I’m so stressed out about this and don’t know what to do! :(
  • @knottiedee944beea66f48b This happened to me also. The pregnancy pillow ended up hurting my legs, hips, back and shoulders more than before I purchased it. I stopped using it and have started sleeping with a very firm pillow between my legs, which has been really helpful. Eventually, as my stomach gets bigger, I feel like I’ll probably use the pregnancy pillow again and try it with another pillow between my legs.
