@maarymh80 do the cousins live in the same area - will y'all regularly be hanging out (if so it might be a little harder to share a name..) I might just tell them what names you are thinking about and see if they say anything about it. Personally, I don't believe in "calling dibs" on a name but I don't think there's anything wrong with expressing your feelings about the name and hoping your SIL understands how much it means to you and maybe will on her own decide a different name - or maybe it will be a boy and it's a non issue!
@muggsd That's the thing...she's VERY understanding (she's one of the first people I always tell...she gets SO excited for me) but I also know she's very sensitive, so I'm not really sure how she might take it. She wouldn't outright get mad at me, but I know it could get under her skin. And she's had a rough year and rough pregnancy (she's having her 12th at 42 and it's taking it's toll, and she's lost both her parents this year) so I think I'm leaning toward not risking upsetting her.
If we use the same name, I think that family would use the proper version and I want to use a nickname, so it might not matter. We probably should just wait and see. But I also want our baby to have a name already!
@marymh80 if you have the opportunity to drop casually that you’ve picked this name, I would. I don’t entirely agree with whichever baby is first- to me it’s whichever baby is NAMED first. If you’ve picked your daughters name, are set, and willing to share feel free to put it out there.
You can also mention why you chose it, the family connection. if they also choose to use it, that’s up to them but you won’t have to worry about feeling like you’re copying. Will you both be spelling the same way? Is it a common name?
I think we’ve settled on Levi Tommy as the name for our little boy. We both like Levi, and it fits well with our other son’s name and our last name. Tommy is my husband’s grandfather’s name. Our other son’s middle name is my grandfather’s name.
We still have no names 😬 Tried to bring it up with DH but he was like - oh we’re thinking about names already? I really can’t think of another boy name to go with the boys names, and I’m not sure of a middle name since we used both grandpas middle names as the boys middle names 😬 I kind of like Remington maybe
@whatabout2ndbreakfast my husband is still very set on waiting until the anatomy scan to start thinking of baby names. Even though one of my friends literally just had a baby that was the opposite gender that they were told.
@whatabout2ndbreakfast they were told it was a girl and ended up having a boy. Google tells me the chances of the ultrasound tech getting it wrong is about 5%.
@deziraywatt that happened to my brother in law and a friend of mine! Both were told they were having boys at the anatomy scan and were shocked at delivery when the doctor said they were girls! My brother in laws wife got so many things embroidered with the boy name and everything they had was blue! They had two more girls after that and never got to use their embroidered items.
I wonder if the OB office keeps track of how often each tech gets the sex wrong. If they're wrong too many times do they get sent to a review class? "This is the 10th time this year you got it wrong, Sharon. Time to retake Fetal Genitalia 101!"
I’m so stuck on boy names. DD1 and DD2 both have, for lack of a better word, clunky and long first names and everything DH likes for a boy is super simple. I love Nathaniel but he hates it. Another problem is that our last name is pretty common and a lot of males with basic names who share it are publicly known white supremacists- and I’m not willing to have my family associated with that rhetoric.
What are everyone’s thoughts about names that end in the name sound as the last name? Our name ends with “n”
@cassafrass15 Our last name ends in "on," and I hate the way any first name that also ends in "on" sounds with our last name. Even if I love the name on its own!
My first and last name both end with 'ay' and I think in flows nicely. But I am not sure that would be the case for every 'ay' name. I will say I liked the way my maiden name flows with my first name more than my married name.
My son’s first and last name ends in a “y”. I personally don’t think it’s an issue. His first and middle name is Henry Graham. I think you need a middle name that chops up the similarities in how the first and last name ends.

@cassafrass15 I’m personally not a fan of first names that sound just like the last name. I’m also a speech therapist so I’m picky about how words sound in general haha! Our last name has two R’s, and I’m driving DH nuts by saying no to almost every first name that has an r in it...
@emeraldcity1214 were stuck too. I have one favorite that H doesn’t like and I hate all his suggestions. Have also looked through more than a thousand names.
@emeraldcity1214 we are conpletely stuck on boy names, too. I don't know why they're so difficult! @agea I like Ice Cream! DH's cousin has a little girl that we still refer to as "Firstname Cupcake" because that's what her big sister wanted to name her. 😂
Update, my mom told me last night that according to one of the kids, SIL is no longer considering using the name we'd initially picked out.
But knowing that she might, I so strongly considered back up choices that now i'm questioning if it's still our number one, or if I like the other options better. Oy.
Either way we'll probably wait til she has and names her baby to announce our name, so we have some time (she's due in april), but this could have been so much easier! As soon as I made the initial suggest to DH, I'm pretty sure he was set that was the name.
I strongly like 2 names and DH strongly likes 2 different names..I don't know if we will ever agree. I am holding out this time in hopes that he will just give up
@whatabout2ndbreakfast can you imagine ordering some fancy things with "Pikachu Alfredo" embroidered on them?!? My MIL is pushing for "Lucy" if it's a girl. FIL wants "Miguel" for a boy. Neither is on our list. 😂 When I finally tell my fifth graders, I'll have to get their opinions. That'll be fun!
I think I like the name Otto, but not sure what would go with it as a middle. The boys have family names as middle names but we’re running out of those. Maybe Samuel or Frederick or Michael? Otto Frederick sounds extremely German though 😅 We’re PA Dutch but not quite that German. Samuel is kinda cute as a first name too but it probably does not work with our extremely common last name.
I looked through another list today. The few names that actually made me stop and say, that could be a possibility, DH shot down. I’m so frustrated. I love the name Henry but DH thinks it’s a weird name. 🙄 show is Henry weird? It’s not even close to being weird.
I don’t want a name like Joshua or any other name that can be shortened into a nickname. I really hate nicknames and for some reason people think they can choose whatever version of the name they like and go with it. Umm, no, absolutely not!
We’re going with Brooks Robert! We found a tinder like app but for baby names and agreed on Brooks. Robert is after my grandfather who died this past November
