Re: TTCAL August 2020

  • i've found myself much less inspired lately regarding everything TTC and this weird headspace means i've fallen very far behind in keeping up with everyone on TB.  i hate that there's so much activity here on this thread and what we've all had to deal with.  anyway will try to catch up on tags

@rsunny @capnjackharkness I’m sorry for the losses you have each endured and that you find yourself here.  I cannot relate anything personally to your specific questions because I have no experience there but hoping you can get answers on all

@fitzfizz that is so frustrating that more testing is now needed, sorry for that news you got.  Hopefully your time benched is short because it stinks missing a cycle

@keikilove it’s a tough balance owning it and not letting it own you.  I get that for sure.  Crossing everything for you that you have a unicorn cycle, but if not, I am happy that you are feeling good about the IVF and will continue crossing everything for you (cue the hand cramps).  And your fears are so completely valid and expected.  I doubt they’ll go away (it would be weird if they did, right??) so aligning mind and body sounds great.  I need to do that too.

@emeraldduchess what beautiful timing with the rainbows.  Im sure that was hard getting through the birthday, but glad you powered through it.

@kenneylynn3 I am so sorry to see you back here.  I don’t think there is a set amount of “grieving” you need to give.  I think that feeling okay and eager to try again is also a great tribute to your loss.  I am sure it is so tough for YW too so thinking of you both

@akoros that is an interesting thing to look into with your own family history.  I never thought to ask my mother about her own journey.  Hopefully AF comes for you soon.  I got AF about 5.5 wks after my D&C

as for me? Progesterone at 7DPO was 4.38 and at 9DPO was 1.50 (AF came 10DPO).  So doctor said the cycle just seems short and we caught it on the downswing, assumes it peaked earlier than 7DPO.  DH and I decided to opt not to test it again next month because it stressed me out a lot, doc agreed.  We are just trying to take things easy for the next few cycles and hope that maybe my body will regulate.  If not, we will revisit retesting in a few months.  I struggled with this for the past week because it made me feel like I wasn’t doing everything in my power to get KU, but I think im my own worst enemy here.

  • @akoros Yes!  I've seen the same mixed studies.  The thing that troubles me is the 'higher risk of MC, especially after 10 weeks' stat.  I've seen that in a few articles too.  I've had all early losses (all 8 weeks or earlier, and none of the ultrasounds/etc showed that the babies developed past like 6 1/2 weeks), so I'm not certain that this test will really show/do much for me personally.  :(
It's definitely stressful doing the testing, both hoping they find something and also being relieved to know you're 'fine.' Like you said, it's obnoxious that insurance companies are driving health care for this stuff, and that they won't test until you have 3 losses (2 now if you meet certain parameters).  Then of those being tested, like 50% of us won't get an answer and will be just written down as 'unexplained.'  But they continue to tell you "just keep trying" like it's NO big deal to continually lose babies...
Are you going to try and see if you can find out any more information on your mother?  Like, maybe there's old records or charts somewhere that it's mentioned on?
Also, as for the IUD, I chose it because every freaking period I was getting with the bleeding and the pain just reminded me of my MCs and made me super depressed, and then VERY angry that my body could bleed that much and I would get such awful cramps, and meanwhile the damned thing couldn't do the ONE thing it's SUPPOSED to do, that I very much wanted (carry a living baby to term).  So I needed an answer that involved not having a period while we were self-benched, and that left IUD or Hysterectomy (which, INSURANCE won't pay for.  I apparently don't 'qualify,' despite having 5 dead babies... So, super glad insurance companies are up my uterus...)

  • @capnjackharkness Agree with you 100% on all of what you said. My second loss was at 15 weeks and the karyotype came back normal (all my scans/tests beforehand were also normal), which is what put thrombophilia on the table as a plausible cause. Not a medical professional, but I think the "after 10 weeks" has to do with when the fetus starts relying more on the placenta rather than the egg sac (if you develop microclots in the placenta then it'll restrict blood flow to the fetus and can therefore cause fetal demise). Agree that if you've had earlier losses it may not fit, but my perspective is that it can't hurt to at least check it out. That's also why I asked for a COVID antibody test while doing everything else -- no reason to think I had COVID, but thought it can't hurt to know for sure.

I don't know if we'll pursue more information on my mom. We're talking 35 years ago and she's well past menopause, so I'm not sure what records would still be around. I'll mention it to my doctors, but she also had a very different experience than I did, so not sure if they'll see it as particularly relevant. I know her one sister was never able to conceive, but her other sister had her first 9 months after their honeymoon (conservative family back in the late 1960s, so they were praying that my cousin wouldn't be premature) and then two more within the next 5 years before getting her tubes tied. I guess she just got all the fertility in that generation.

Totally understand your reasoning for getting an IUD, and frustration at your body. Sorry it's been so difficult, need to catch a break!
  • @akoros I have to look at my charts and look up thrombophilia.  I believe my new ob asked if I've had Factor V testing and I couldn't remember. I know when I was younger I was tested for a few bleeding disorders as I have unexplained bleeding and lack of clotting. But reading everyone's stories makes me wonder if that's what my 20 well loss was. The ob I had before this one, told me to take a baby aspirin while pregnant, which makes me believe I either was tested and have it or was never tested.

I'm sorry for all of you who are here. I hope to be more involved and better at tagging next month.

  • @Kenneylynn3 If it helps, Factor V Leiden is actually the opposite of what you're talking about -- blood clots don't break up as easily as they should (rather than lack of clotting). The MFM also did say that, in her opinion, it's a good idea for most people to take baby aspirin daily, so that could be why your ob suggested it.
  • @akoros thanks. I did understand what it was for, and after I looked it up, I remembered my maternal grandfather had DVTs. My 20 week loss was due to a blood clot in the umbilical cord, which makes me think I should be tested.

  • @Kenneylynn3 Right, you did say that. I thought to clarify because my mom has been very confused by it (my father was also recently in the hospital because of uncontrolled bleeding, caused by too many blood thinners, so that's also on her mind). Definitely not a bad idea to get it checked out.
