I got my bill for the NIPT and found it so interesting! My Dr. said that by going through insurance, the cost could be significant (depending on what insurance does/does not cover). If we chose to bypass insurance altogether, it would be $299. I was fine paying the $299 rather than go through insurance, and I'm glad I did! I have a high deductible policy, and could have potentially paid THOUSANDS for it to go through my insurance. This seems crazy to me. The -$3,191 adjustment is coded as a "self pay discount."
Just an update about my NIPT results (background I had a risk unchanged result for angelman’s syndrome). After being a complete pain in the ass, my MFM doctor called and spoke directly to a genetic counselor and he found out that the babies fetal fraction was sufficient, but his DNA is so close to my DNA that based on their analyzation methods they can’t separate ours with assurance to give a 1/16,000 risk. He confirmed there is nothing indicating that the baby has angelman’s. I had read about this as a reason for risk unchanged, but nobody said anything about that to me or my OB. I had actually called and complained so much because of the open ended answers asking for another test, but instead they are not charging me for the test. So glad I never have to go through this nonsense again and glad baby is ok...also slightly concerned we have such similar DNA, poor boy, lol.
