Re: Question Thread

  • Anybody got a good hack to keep maternity pants from slipping down? I have a few different brands and they all do this. I can't go down a size in the hips.
  • Loading the player...
  • @Xstatic3333 - Over the belly, or the side stretch kind?
  • @marebear15 they're all over the belly; I never see the side stretch kind on sale!
  • @Xstatic3333 If you figure it out, let me know! My maternity jeans never stay up
  • @c1kc1kpol1cn1k Like @persnickity I lift weights a lot as part of workouts, so I’m planning to continue (and did with DD pregnancy) throughout, though I do modify the range of motion, e.g. do movements from the “hang” position instead of from the ground. Also, I believe the usual recommendation is not to lift weights overhead after 20 weeks, so I will make that modification once I hit 20 weeks.
  • Im 16weeks, first pregnancy and will be having a beautiful baby boy. I’m 5’4 and weight 101, my weight is up and down ): I could be 101 today and another day 104. Question is when will I actually start to gain weight without having to lose it. It’s mainly when i sleep and wake up in the morning it’s when my weight has dropped. Another question, my belly is tiny and since it’s my first pregnancy will it take longer for my belly to really pop out?
  • @Xstatic3333 - I used a tight maternity tank over top of my maternity skirts and shorts. Between the two layers, it somehow keeps it up. You might also just have to keep dealing with it until your belly gets large enough to hold them up on its own.

@euniceeestar - It's common for weight to fluctuate in the 1st trimester. Now that you are hitting 2nd trimester, you should start putting on about .5 lbs a week, and in the 3rd trimester it changes to about 1 lb a week. Your belly is going to take longer to pop since your a FTM, but based on your height, I would say you should pop around 20 weeks. Welcome to the club!
  • Used car seat thoughts:

So when we had DD we used my nephew's car seat, and now they are using it again with their new addition. I can use the same bucket seat, the only downfall is that it would have gone through 3 kids now, and was purchased in 2015.

Technically the car seat is perfectly fine since expiry is usually 6-7 years, it's just a little worn and torn. Do I use this as an excuse to buy a new seat, or just use the old one and save money haha.
  • @c1kc1kpol1cn1k, It's right at the edge, so I'd err on the side of caution and buy a new one. But, I'm paranoid like that.
  • @euniceeestar , most people weigh less in the morning than the evening, pregnant or not. Pay attention to making sure you're eating right, with PLENTY of iron. Due to your age, you're at a higher risk for pica: non-food cravings. Like some women crave dirt...baby powder...chalk...I craved ice, which while no nutritional value, was at least water, right? Normal weight gain is about 35lbs, but you should speak to your OB about your SPECIFIC weight gain and caloric requirements.
  • @c1kc1kpol1cn1k I’d buy new but I don’t trust people to use their seats correctly lol. Any type of accident, no matter how small, or even washing the cover and straps incorrectly can cause the seat to be unusable.
  • @kbrown and @FyreFlyeRush good call and the seat has been through 3 kids by now
  • @euniceeestar thanks for posting! I'm just hitting 17 weeks today and I feel the same way! I'm a FTM, too, and have really only gained 4 pounds so far. It still only looks like I ate too much or gained a beer belly. I am trying not to get anxious about not gaining enough weight or not being big enough, but sometimes I worry.
  • @alisonreif2 and @euniceeestar if it makes you feel any better, I'm 17 weeks pregnant with twins and am so far net loss of 8 pounds since I got pregnant. I was also extremely concerned and brought it up to my doctors this week. They've said the baby(ies) will take whatever nutrients they need, so as long as babies are growing appropriately, not to worry.
  • @alisonreif2 I've ganed a net 2lbs from my pre-pregnancy weight. 1st trimester was rough and I lost 4 lbs during it. I was concerned but my dr and ultrasound tech both reassured me that I was fine. You can always ask your dr. But I feel like they would have said something by now if they were concerned. I think the 1st trimester is rough for a lot of women and not a lot of weight is gained (if any at all) during those first 3 months. My bump really just started to pop at 17.5 weeks as an FTM. Our bodies don't have that muscle memory from previous children so we stay smaller longer.

  • @alisonreif2 I second @stashattack, your doctor will mention something and first trimester is a rough one. I am also concerned about not gaining enough but only now at 20 weeks do I actually have an appetite increase

Does anyone know if all amusement park rides are a no-go? Are small drops bad? Sorry if this is an obvious answer. I'm not one to get an adrenaline rush on rides so I'm wondering if anyone has any info them.
This reply is probably a bit late (just joined recently) but I have a different perspective than previous posters, so thought I'd chime in.  I asked my midwife this exact question since we were going to Hershey Park and she told me that at this point in pregnancy (early 2nd tri) almost all were ok to go on.  The only thing she said to avoid were very intense roller coasters or other "extreme"-type rides that I have no interest in going on anyway.  She did say that after around 24 weeks, there would start to be a slight risk of placental abruption and there would be more restrictions on rides.

So, at 15ish weeks PG, I went on various rides including a small rollercoaster, scrambler, tilt a whirl, and lots of kiddy rides with DD.  I'd recommend asking your HCP if you're interested in going on some rides.
  • @cats_in_a_window thanks!
I did end up asking my OB and she said since it's so early and I'm doing good, to use my common sense. She said the baby's really protected & it would take a lot to cause harm at this point.
She said she even went on some rides in her early pregnancy. The tour ride did get unexpectedly jolty, but I feel alright; I think it just woke the baby up.

Has anyone taken to protein shakes at all? Like Ensure? I'm struggling to keep stuff down right now, losing about half of most meals I eat. It's not "morning sickness". I just seem to (TMI warning) throw up a bunch of acid about 45m to 1hr after I eat. If I try an antacid, it comes back up IMMEDIATELY. I'm more concerned with making sure I'm maintaining SOME calories.
  • @FyreFlyeRush I’ve been drinking premier protein shakes. My appetite hasn’t been too good so I have these in the morning with my breakfast. I’m sure I can find a healthier option but these are low sugar and taste good and give me 13 grams of protein. Plus they are pretty budget friendly.
  • @FyreFlyeRush I use atkins shakes occasionally when my schedule is stacked and I need a snack.  I was recommended that brand by my cousin with my first pregnancy.  She experienced gestational diabetes and that was one that her doctor approved/recommended.
  • Strange question and idk if anyone else will be in this situation with me - regular T-Shirts no longer fit right since they come up on my belly, but I'm a HUGE college sports fan and HAVE to have some team apparel to rock during the upcoming football and basketball seasons! Does anyone know of any stores or sites that sell collegiate team maternity apparell? Or am I stuck buying a few oversized shirts?

    P.S. Go Blue!!!
  • @allis0n_b_92 I would checkout Etsy. I bet they would have college-themed maternity tshirts

  • @allis0n_b_92 Fanatics has some! Depending on how popular the team is, they definitely have tshirts.

  • @amb0924 thanks for the great suggestion! Not really sure how the University of Michigan didn't make their cut, but oh well!

@stashattack guess I'll definitely be checking out Etsy! 😊
  • This question came up during conversation at a family party this weekend when my husband said he didn't want to get a flu shot..... What is protocol or what have experienced moms done in the past in regards to partners/parents/siblings/close relatives getting the flu shot and whooping cough booster? I know my OB gives them to me automatically. Haven't had a chance to ask my OB yet, but curious what others have done in the past with family members who are planning to be near babies a lot. I kind of want to make them all get their flu shot and booster since these babies are going to be born in January in the middle of flu season.....

@amb0924 - I used to ambivalent about the flu shot, saying that its a shot in the dark, etc. But the past two January's I've gotten the flu, and both times they were dangerous and scary. The first, I was nursing my 3 month old, and I was so dehydrated from having both flu A and B, that I nearly got taken to the hospital. It also almost dried me up. Last year, I was 5 weeks pregnant, and the high fever caused me to miscarry. I'm not fooling around this year.

I've already discussed flu shots with two of my sisters, and I'm going to inform the rest of my siblings to get their shots when they become available through their work/school. Usually beginning of October. My DD will get hers with her 2 year old appointment, and my husband will get his through his work. My SIL is a germaphobe, and I probably won't even have to remind her to get them and her 3 kids. She will make sure her husband gets one to. My only issue is my parents who are anti-vaxxers. Not sure how that conversation is going to go...
  • @amb0924 I'm wondering this too. We don't typically get flu shots but obviously this year will be different, but we have a few "anti-vaxxers" in our immediate family and I'm struggling with how to handle that with a winter newborn. I haven't talked to the Dr about it yet either but will definitely ask at my next appt.

*I know vaccines in general are a touchy subject, and normally I try not to have an opinion about what others choose for themselves/their family BUT obviously now that has to change a bit since it affects the decisions I make for my family*
  • @amb0924 dd was also born in january. I got the flu shot when I was pregnant & dh got it as he is frontline medical. However, no one else in either of our families did and it wasnt an issue. Dd wasnt sick once until she started daycare a week before her first birthday when I went back to work. Those first few months, she caught everything going & it was a nightmare!
  • @amb0924 I don’t get vaccinated during pregnancy but that is because of my own PGAL issues and experiences. We don’t have any anti vaxers in the immediate family so I know they will all get their flu shot and are up to date with everything else. I do ask that anyone who is sick, has been sick or been around sick people hold off from visiting in the beginning, no one who smokes or is wearing clothes they smoked in is allowed and hand washing is a must.
  • @amb0924 our whole family will be getting the flu shot this year.  DH and I both get it through work, so its pretty much a given, and although we tend to be somewhat ambivalent about getting DS and DD flu shots each year, they will get them this year.  I've been vaccinated for flu and TDap during my PGs with DS & DD and will with this one as well.  Not sure about DH getting a TDap booster if he's up to date.  Will have to ask about that.

I'm not going to demand that non-nuclear family gets vaccinated, although I suspect most are since they have medical conditions or work in healthcare.  I tend not to worry too much about "germs" (read up on the hygiene hypothesis if you're interested) but will use common sense in that someone obviously sick with the flu shouldn't be visiting a newborn.
  • I’ve never gotten the flu shot but maybe this year we’ll give it a go. Like @leprechaunlady said, my DD also didn’t get sick until she went to daycare at 18 months.

For a whooping cough booster I strongly encourage it! I picked up the whooping cough in 2016 and it was severely debilitating, coughing so hard I cracked my ribs, I really don’t know how a baby would survive it to be honest
  • @allis0n_b_92 I bought some cotton bands from Amazon last pregnancy.  They almost extend a t-shirt so the top of your pants are covered.
  • @amb0924 during my first pregnancy I received both Tdap and flu shot in 3rd tri. I was due in Oct which is a high illness season. I'm mixed about the flu shot.  We had a rule of no kissing baby and no touching without handwashing.
  • With our daughter being born in May we didn't have to worry about flu season but I think I'm definitely going to recommend to close family members that will be around & visiting at the hospital/afterwards to get their flu vac.  TDAP is also non-negotiable for me.  If you want to hold my baby, you have to have your TDAP up to date.  I'm not willing to risk it.  Thankfully we don't have any anti-vaxxers in the family so we didn't have an issue with family following through on the TDAP.  Except my mom, who is just a general pain in the ass and prefers to make things as complicated as possible..but ultimately I found out she was up to date because of working within a hospital.
  • @amb0924 thank you so much for starting this conversation! I've never had the flu shot before so I asked something similar in another group & it didn't go well at all. Now I feel more informed.
  • @ang3lbb just a FTM trying to figure it all out =) thanks to everyone for sharing their thoughts and experiences as well!
  • While we are on this topic,  something to ask your pediatrician or doctor.  With my first baby,  we were asked at the hospital about immunization for Hep B. They give it immediately after birth here.  It's a multi-shot or series of shots.  Nobody had mentioned this to us so we made the best decision for our family.  Just tossing it out there for education.
