Glucose Test

Re: Glucose Test

  • It's all based  on your genetics. I drank oj and coffee with international cream an hour before mine and still passed.  If your going to fail your going to fail.

  • No diabetes for me, yay!!
  • @rennie1108 I got my results back within minutes of them taking a blood sample during my 1hr and my 3hr as well. I think it depends on how your insurance company wants your blood drawn. My nurse mentioned my insurance wants me to get my fingers pricked which is better than looking for a vein on me anyway because it takes a freaking miracle to get one of my veins.

  • I tested at 157 on my 1 hr :( I’m guessing this means I have to do some more testing. My dr hasn’t gotten back to me yet, but the test results are in my online file already. Arg. I can not restrict my diet more than I already am.
  • @kbirchtree sounds very likely :( hopefully you’ll pass the 3 hr, and if not, you can skip straight to insulin to avoid disrupting your diet
  • @kbirchtree I'm sorry to hear that! They didn't give me a number; they just said I passed. Huh.

I did the one hour test at 24 weeks. I “passed”. I got 132, and the cutoff listed on my patient portal was 140. Me and DH were thrilled and went out to eat to celebrate. No one ever called me. Nothing. Today I went in for my 28 week appointment, and it turns out I actually failed, because their cutoff is 130 and not 140. So I have to do the 3 hour test.
Firstly, why does their patient portal still list 140 as the cutoff, if their cutoff is actually 130? Secondly, if I failed, why didn’t anyone call me? I have been operating under the assumption that I did not have GD and definitely have been eating all of the carbs and sweets at times, too. DH was there with me, and he said that he thinks our midwife doesn’t see this as a big concern and is only ordering the 3 hour test because she “has” to. I really hope he is right. I’m also being tested for anemia, because my blood counts were weird even though I’m on an iron supplement. I know I should be grateful that they’re taking all of the right precautions, but this is frustrating as hell.
  • Ugh, that stinks @lilpotatomama.  I'm not sure why they didn't contact you about it either.  Fingers crossed you pass the 3 hour!  My test said that "normal," range is 70-140.  My iron levels are also low, although I've been bad about taking my iron supplement regularly.  Can you talk to them about why the change/inconsistency in cutoff number at your next appointment?

  • Sorry @lilpotatomama!  I'm sure your H is right, she's probably only making you do the 3 hour because that's their protocol even though you passed.  Frustrating is right!

  • @lilpotatomama I understand your frustration. I have noticed that doctors responses to GD vary widely. It might have been because you are so close to their 130 cutoff and they feel you will very likely pass the 3 hour. I don’t agree with not treating it with the due diligence it deserves but I can’t say it’s not something I have seen quite a bit based on surfing some of the other boards.

It seems that there is a lot of fear mongering about the dangers of unchecked GD but at the same time a more laid back approach to it by many practitioners, especially if you are on the borderline. Which makes no sense.

  • @lilpotatomama I'm sorry to hear that! I'd be sooooooo annoyed. It is weird how different docs/midwives/etc respond differently. I had to email mine asking for my results, and then they just said I passed. They didn't give me a number, and now I really want to know! They did have my CBC results and everything is in the normal range. Thank goodness, because I do NOT want to take an iron supplement that would contribute to my already constipated self!
  • @lilpotatomama Sorry you went through that! It’s especially frustrating that they didn’t follow up on it with you until your next appointment. If it’s any consolation, it makes sense that the provider might not see it as a big deal if they felt it was okay to sit on the results for a couple weeks. Reference ranges for things like glucose are kind of weird- patients can get obviously bad high numbers, where the doc can and will immediately follow up, but there’s also mildly elevated ones- like you got- where something is basically normal but is enough to trigger a follow up. They have to draw a line somewhere.

Best of luck on the 3 hour. Remember that this past one is just a screening test, and is meant to catch a larger number of people than the 3 hour- there’s a good chance your number was just a little high and not a symptom of GD.
  • @lilpotatomama, I would be just as frustrated! I had a midwife for my first pregnancy, and I'm using an OB this time (not by choice). so far, the biggest difference I've noticed between the 2 caregivers is midwives tend to not make a big deal out of things. so I'm hoping for you what your husband has mentioned, that she thinks it isn't a big deal?

but not getting a call for your results is bullshit. I took my glucose & blood work for anemia last friday and I haven't gotten a phone call. I finally called yesterday, left a voicemail, and missed their return call. instead of leaving a voicemail to tell me all is good, they said to call them back. so I'm expecting not good results, but if they tell me there is an issue, I'm gonna give them hell for making ME call THEM 3 business days after the tests were ordered! I even called them at 4:45 yesterday, before their offices closed, and got the "our offices are closed" message. fucking bullshit.
  • @kangstadt @mermaidca @thatbaintforbetty @rennie1108 @lin0442 @batmama31 thanks, yall. I also think their lack of response is because I was so close to their cutoff. They’ve been really great about calling me with test results in the past when it’s been more urgent (when I had an infection that needed to be treated, etc) but not this time, which makes me hopeful that this isn’t a real cause for concern. It’s the false hope that really upset me. I’m going to tell them at my next appointment that the patient portals NEED to be updated to reflect their “new” cutoff count. I don’t want this happening to anyone else.
  • @lilpotatomama:  So sorry.  :(  Do you have to wait a long time to take your 3-hour and get closure?
  • @TheSouffleGirl doing it next Wednesday, so not crazy long. This gives me a week to see if I can make it without sweets! Trying to be positive.

I was on metformin for PCOS until 12 weeks (during y first glucose test) so I’m sort of hoping they can let me go back on that to help... it’s a type 2 diabetes drug used to tell your body to use its own insulin more efficiently. Anyway, I need it to help my body ovulate because my insulin is up and down which makes my hormones off balance. :/ or maybe it will test fine for the tree hour. In the meantime I am trying to find a fiber that will stay in me.
  • @lilpotatomama ughh! That’s so frustrating, I’m sorry you’re going through all that. Hopefully your office updates their portal to the correct numbers for the future!!
  • ☹️ got my results this week that I have GD. extremely bummed. Is there a board for people with GD so I can get some ideas for snacks and such?
  • @kayceebaby1 there are some ideas in “What’s for Dinner?” but feel free to start something with @thatbaintforbetty
  • @kayceebaby1 I’ll start a thread and tag you in it. I was planning to start one when test results started coming in if nobody else did.

GT screening going down right now; fruit punch thing doing its magic. I don't really like/drink soda or sweet drinks, so I'm not really practiced enough to tell any difference between what I just had, liquified fruit snacks, and flat Cherry Coke. Didn't bother me beyond routine heartburn and the fact that I'd rather it taste like a beer, but, then again, I've been lucky enough to have had a relatively stable stomach this trimester.

I did fail the 1/pass the 3 last time around, though, so I'm betting I'll get an opportunity to modify my gastronomical review...
  • I honestly think that the drink didn't bother me (like, at all, even afterwards) because I am a sugar junkie. I'm actually surprised I'm not diabetic!
  • Half-way mark! (My drs office does the 2 hr diagnostic). Really looking forward to the peanut butter crackers in my bag
  • Passed the one hour test. 132.  But if my doctor's threshold had been 130, I would not have passed.  The different standards seem so odd.

And that drink (mine was clear and "orange" flavored) is gross.

    Standard is closer to 140.
But there is a margin of 16 either direction. So some make the permissible high lower tonjumo to the 3 hr test and some don’t. Mine was 157 and I’m going for my 3hr next wed.
  • Fun fact- reference ranges vary between labs for a lot of tests, since many of them are developed and tweaked to that lab’s machines. They should fall within nationally monitored ranges, but the ‘normal’ windows at different facilities will vary slightly.
  • Passed with an 85 (pleasantly surprised because I failed the 1-hr with DD)!

Hoping for the same for everyone else!
  • @TheSouffleGirl congrats! That is really low, which I'm assuming the lower it is the better. Mine was 90-something so I was pretty happy about that because my body LOVES sugar! I'm glad it processes it well lol.
  • @rennie1108 1108: Yeah, my portal said 65-135 was normal?  I'm now kind of fascinated by all these variables and the way they differ by practice/lab.

  • Doing the test tomorrow with a lemon-lime flavored glucola-type thing, yay? Wish me luck, for some reason I'm terrified!

  • Did the three hour one today. Fingers crossed I pass. It tasted like a melted popsicle. Four blood draws and one is still a little stingy.

  • @sheepshepherdess Good luck! I remember being really freaked out before mine too! Don't let anything anyone says get you all psyched out, it only makes things worse! You've got this, girl! Knock that bad boy down and it the worst of it will be over before you know it :)
  • Got my Results and I passed. My doc threshold is 135 I got a 106. Woot.

  • Good news, the drink was delicious and tasted like flat sprite, but sweeter!

Bad news is I failed, badly,at 166 :( Three hour test here I come...
    Me: 29 DW: 44
  • That drink is terrible I got the orange and chugged it. I have bad veins so the worst part was the nurse digging around for a vein. My arm is still sore! How long till I can expect results!? Im nervous.
  • The different ranges are so weird how is that not universal?
  • edited January 2019
@stefanielyn1991 I have bad veins too. (I have no issues with needles though after having to give shots to myself now for both pregnancies)

I had my results in a day or 2, available online. I think some docs do a no news is good news thing and only call if you fail. I would think you could call them though and ask for the results or a call when they are in regardless of the outcome.

Also there is an interesting article posted earlier in the thread that talks about the test and ranges and some of the details on why it’s not totally universal.
