January 2019 IVF

Is it too early to start the January discussion?

I'm likely do another cycle in January. I'm 38 and have very low AMH (.03). I did my first cycle in October/November which resulted in one follicle which unfortunately turned out to be empty at egg retrieval. My protocol will be changing slightly.  I understand the reality of my situation and that the odds are not in my favor, but I am not ready to give up yet.

Re: January 2019 IVF

  • @ah80 not too early for me! We are doing our first ivf cycle in January. I’m sorry your first one wasn’t successful and hope this one is! We’ve waited for several months to do IVF.
  • We are officially in for January. I should be meeting with my coordinator next week to get my calendar and medication order.  We ended up with a credit bigger than I thought it would be from our last cycle, so that was a nice surprise.

I've been doing acupuncture between about 1-3x/week since August. I have insurance that covers that but unfortunately my benefits are exhausted for the the rest of the year.  I'm just going to go 1x/week until January. I'm not sure if acupuncture really makes a difference but it can't hurt. I also started taking 600mg of CoQ10 a couple of weeks ago.

Some days I'm still in shock that this invasive and expensive treatment is what we have to do for a chance to have a baby.

  • I just received my schedule for January yesterday and I am starting acupuncture today! I am just as shocked that this is what I have to do to get my own little miracle. I just imagined things differently. This will be our first cycle of IVF, I am 32 and my husband is 33. My husband's sperm is fine, my ovaries are producing where they should be, my issues is that my tubes are blocked/scarred so conceiving naturally is a 1% chance because of the blockage from endometriosis. My doctor is very hopeful that we will be successful as we will be bypassing the issue with IVF. I just started my birth control and will be starting to order my meds in December. I hope for great things for us all!

  • @knottie05fda1051d419f14 i’m 33 and we’re unexplained.. I kinda wish they could give me an explanation as to why we’re not getting pregnant. Did 3 IUI’s w clomid and that was my limit w that ugh. We have an ivf teach class in a few weeks. My hubby insists on coming even tho I plan on giving myself the shots (he’s very clumsy)!  No birth control before ivf for me but I’m not complaining about that!

  • Lurking a little since there is a possibility I may be in this group. Long-time infertility fighter with LOTS of history. Just transferred the remainder of what was banked from my 2015 round of IVF. FX it works, but trying to prepare mentally if I have to go through the whole process again (our insurance doesn't cover, so it's all cash and our clinic is 260-mi roundtrip for each appointment ... those two things are so much worse than the meds or the waiting).

I see we have one person who has been through IVF and three first-timers. Is that correct?

  • Ahhh, I'll blame the meds in my FET protocol on that miscalculation ;)

Does everyone have a date in January for the ER (egg retrieval)? Has anyone started their medication? I'm trying to remember what that process was like ... I only remember it being overwhelming.

  • @MamaK225 that’s not comforting to know lol. My ER will be late jan around the 27th probly. Not doing suppression first and I start stims in mid Jan.

  • If you've got a good clinic, it's a lot less overwhelming. Nurses who keep in contact with you, doctors who explain things, etc. If you've not already fallen down the rabbit hole of research, it can be overwhelming. And the stress of things being "just in time," so meds arriving *the day* you need them, etc ... I'm a planner and it's hard to deal with the "we'll test today and let you know" part of it, I like having a schedule laid out. Hopefully, I will avoid doing it again, but I feel if I must, it will be much less stressful this time around, since I've already done it once before and I trust everyone I'm working with now (instead of them being just strangers like they were 3 years ago).

  • I will be doing my second cycle in January. I'm feeling better this time since I know what to expect.  I should be getting my calendar soon, but believe that egg retrieval is sometime around the 3rd week in January.
  • Jumping in to join! First IVF round for us after 6 failed IUIs this past year. I should start shots on 1/17, hoping for a 1/28 retrieval and then we are doing a frozen transfer so we will freeze and transfer in end of March/beginning of April.

  • Jumping in here as my FET will be scheduled for January. My ER was November. Is anyone here scheduled for FET? Sometimes there are two separate threads
  • Joining you ladies, 2019 is OURS!!!

I tried a cycle in Nov/Dec but we never even got out of the gate. After I stopped the BCP and went in for my ultrasound on the day I was supposed to start the stims, my RE noticed that a cyst had developed on my right ovary and we were cancelled. Since then, I have been put back on the BCP in the hopes of shrinking the cyst (which has worked, it's gone from 33mm to less than 15mm), I will stop the BCP on Dec 7 and go back on Dec 10 so my RE can check me all out again. I'll get the game plan for January during that visit.

We we will be doing an FET, probably sometime in March.
  • Hi everyone! I will be doing my first IVF cycle starting stims January 7th (hopefully!). We have been trying for two years. We tried clomid this summer with my gyno with no luck. I had my RE consult in November and found out at my preliminary ultrasound that I have an endometrioma on my right ovary and potentially have silent endometriosis. I'm going in this week to have an endometrioma drained. I started birth control last week and have my initial planning appointment next week. I just keep crossing my fingers that this cycle will be a go and that we will have some good news in the next couple months.
  • Hi All! I’m so happy to see you ladies started the Jan ivf thread. Thanks for sharing on here. I’ve been reading December’s over the last month looking forward to joining the group for Jan. I’m 35, been TTC for 18 months. Started clomid 7 months ago and had 6 IUI’s. Always produce at least 3 mature follicles, tubes are open, ovarian reserve is high but haven’t gotten pregnant. Hubby has high motility and count. One fertility specialist says I may have POCS and not ovulating every month. However don’t have any symptoms of pcos. The most recent fertility doc said I’m in the 25% of unexplained fertility but have great outlook for IVF due to reserve and great response to clomid. I start birth control Dec 22. Retrieval should be around Jan 22. I had my consult today for the injections. Feeling overwhelmed that I’m in this situation and not able to conceive. Trying to be hopeful. Any advice from others is welcomed. Thanks in advance!
  • Hi everyone! I’m going to be doing my FET in January. My ER was at the end of October. This month we are doing a mock cycle with ERA biopsy testing. I only have one frozen embryo, so my doctor recommended this to give us the best chance. Has anyone done a mock cycle?
  • Also glad to see so many of other ladies on here!

@ellis1983 we are in similar boats.. I’m 33 and unexplained. Trying for 13 months and did 3 IUIs (3 follicles on clomid per round too). My ovarian reserve is normal for age.. and the 2 things that have been thrown out there as potential causes are silent-ish endometriosis (bc I have pain when I ovulate) and/ or my hubby’s borderline morphology. I just got an ivf coloring book on Amazon bc I know I’ll be on pins and needles (pun intended) the entire ivf round!
  • @somewhereinnyc thanks for sharing. Love the coloring book idea! Fingers crossed that it all works out for you (and everyone on here). Knowing others are mentally, emotionally and physically going through this at the same time is comforting. Can’t wait to hear about your progress :)

  • Ohhh this sounds fun! (the coloring book not the needles)

  • Hi everyone! I’m lurking here with my fingers crossed for a FET in January. Was supposed to transfer today, but they cancelled due to my blood pressure being higher than usual and some OHSS. I’m not on the calendar yet for January, but hoping they squeeze me in because February seems so far away :(

    @pgdwivf hello again!
  • Hi Everyone, I am joining this thread as we are scheduled for retrieval January 31st. I am 32 and we have been trying to conceive for 3 years. I have endometriosis and have had 3 surgeries to get to this point! We are excited and anxious at the same time. My eggs and ovaries are perfect along with my Hubby’s sperm. We are hopeful it will just take 1 cycle to get a little miracle. We met with our dr yesterday and got our schedule. I started the birth control the last week in November. Stims start the 13th of Jan. Best of luck to us all!
  • Hello,
I will be doing a FET in January. Starting my birth control Monday for two weeks, 2 weeks Lupron injections, then 2 weeks oral meds then transfer around January 18-20.

I have had 4 failed IVF attempts this year and have been TTC for over 3 years. I’m 33 and husband is 35. This last ER in November is the farthest I have been so far. I was able to get 5 in the freezer. I have never had any blast at all in my previous attempts so I’m starting to feel hopeful.

  • I received my calendar Friday. My protocol was changed from my previous and unsuccessful last cycle. I will be on medications for a shorter amount of time, the dosages have been decreased, and I won't be on Estrogen this time.  Hoping this works and we have some embryos to freeze this time.
  • So we just had our ivf teach class yesterday and there are so many steps in med administration! I may go to the class again! Also just found out we’re male factor not unexplained (low morphology). My starting dose is 150 follistim and 150 menopur- that sounded kinda low to me but who knows..

Welcome and Good Luck to Everyone. My FET is tentatively scheduled for the end of January pending the PGD test results (ETA 12/22) on my two embabies who are waiting in the freezer (so I guess they are snowbabies now).

somewhereinnyc the doses for stims are different for everyone. Don't be concerned as the RE checks the ultrasound so frequently they will adjust as needed. Mine did, he added an extra day at the end with a lower dose. I was on 225 Gonal F 9 days and last (day 10) day at 175.

    @platasolWed49228 We got this ;) !!

    2019 is defiantly ours!!
    somewhereinnyc
  • @somewhereinnyc I was told I was on the highest protocol that I could be given my last cycle.  For this cycle, the medication is reduced.  It left me wondering how I could respond on less medication if I didn't respond to the highest doses.  This isn't an exact science.  I'm trusting the process and am hoping for the best.
    somewhereinnyc
  • @ah80 @pgdwivf thanks for the reassurance ladies! Definitely some variability in this stuff
  • On our first IVF cycle; hopefully starting the stims on 01/10. 32 years of age, 2 surgeries for endometriosis and 3 failed IUIs. So hopeful this time and holding my breath for a miracle in 2019. How many days after the stims is the retrieval scheduled?  My nurse, even though she is the best, doesn't communicate too well and my calendar does not have any dates besides the day to stop taking BC and the baseline ultrasound/stims date.
Keeping my fingers crossed for everyone on this thread. So grateful for this opportunity to share my thoughts with you.
  • @sbhawnani For my last cycle retrieval was scheduled 13 days after I started the stims, but it could have been anywhere between 12-14 days. My calendar for January looks the same.  Monitoring for both cycles starts on day 8 of the stims, which is where my calendar stops for now. That last few days before retrieval I going in every other day and they were adjusting my medication and calendar each time. The RN should be able to give you an estimate of when retrieval should be.
  • I just ordered my first two medications. I start Lupron and Omnitrope on 1/3. I think I trick myself into thinking I'm spending less by breaking it up. Also, I don't want to buy everything yet until I know for sure my cycle isn't getting canceled after I go in for baseline.

Unfortunately, our credit from my last cycle ended up being least than we thought it would be after my insurance didn't pay for some of my testing. So that was disappointing. My clinic gave me a "cash pay" discount, so that helped take it down a few hundred. I don't think this is unique, but that just seems so shady to charge my insurance one price and when they don't pay, charge me half?  I'm waiting to see if there are any other "discounts" my clinic can give me. I hate asking and that's totally not how I usually do things, but I have actually saved some money by asking my clinic and pharmacy. Apparently some of this is arbitrary and negotiable. All of this is so unnecessarily and insanely expensive.  I wish I would have asked my first cycle.
  • ***TW: pregnancy and loss mentioned***

Hello, all! I am doing IVF due to MFI. My DH has surgery as a baby that essentially also left him with an unexpected vasectomy. I am scheduled to start stims 1/5 with a tentative retrieval the 16th. This is our second IVF cycle. Last one was May 2018 where we got 6 embryos. Out of those we had **TW** 2 successful pregnancies that both ended about 6 weeks along. *TW end* I’m emotionally drained from the first IVF attempt, but ready to try again. I look forward to the journey with you all!

Welcome and good luck to all!
I got the go ahead for my (second) retrieval to start with Jan AF (somewhere around the 7th). Was really struggling with going for another retrieval. RE changed the injection with hopes the more of the mature fertilized make it to 5 day blasts. Taking Gonal F (like last round) but Menopur has been added? Anyone familiar with Menopur?

sbhawnani  my retrieval was day 13. It is based on how well your follicles are growing, so it is case by case basis. My RE thought it might be day 11 but added another day with a lower stim dose after the day 10 ultrasound.

    11/29 18 eggs retrieved
    11/30 14 mature, 9 fertilized
    12/6 (2) 5day blasts tested PGD/PGS
12/21 (2) embryos were unhealthy both PGS positive, one PGD positive

I am starting Lupron and Omnitrope today. I was up like every hour last night.  I've been dreading starting all of this again.
  • good luck to you @ah80 and thank you, everyone, for your help. My baseline is scheduled for 1/10 and that is when I'll know more about the stims and further monitoring. It's probably my nerves but I haven't been able to sleep well ever since I started my BC for the procedure and have been a nervous wreck. The BC ends this Monday so really hope that I'll be able to sleep better for a couple days before the stims and then see what fun side effects those have. Life's been tough; pushing through just because the end result will be worth it.

My doctor has advised against the genetic screening of embryos. Do any of you ladies feel it is necessary?

@sbhawnani We are on a similar schedule. I stop BC on Sunday and have baseline on 1/10. BC make sure me feel bad and I've been having breakthough bleeding for about a week.  Last time, I didn't really have any sideeffects from the stims. But my body didn't really respond so maybe that's why. I completely lost my appetite and I literally had to force myself to eat. Regarding testing, we had planned to do it last time and we still need to decide if we are going to this time. Our RE recommended against it this time. We are unlikely to get many embryos, if any at all. The RE said it makes the most sense to test to transfer the best one if you have many to choose from.
  • @ah80 I will probably be asking you a million questions as we go through this together. I wish you all the luck with the procedure. I know it is overwhelming but remember we are all in this together with the same end goal.
  • @ah80 @sbhawnani just like you ladies, I end BC on Sunday. Ultrasound and mock embryo transfer on Monday. Sounds like I’ll start stims around 1/11. This is my first retrieval and nervous about this whole process. I’m also glad we are in this together. Sometimes I feel like the only one going through extremes to get pregnant. Looking forward to hearing everyone’s progress. Please post as you start stims. I’m super anxious over giving myself shots and side effects I may get. I know it’s worth it but don’t know what to expect.

    How's everyone doing so far?
  • @ellis1983 like I said earlier, we're in this together and hope this makes the experience less daunting. I am in the same boat as you. Super nervous about giving myself shots and worried sick about the side effects. Hopefully, we don't get any nasty side effects and everything is smooth sailing. I will start posting daily as soon as I start the stims.
@ah80 Done with my last BC last night and now holding my breath for AF to show up. How are you doing? Are you doing anything to be positive about this whole thing? I am currently on the struggle bus. It's nice to be able to come here and talk to you girls about anything and everything.

@sbhawnani My last BC was yesterday too too. I've been having breakthrough bleeding for over a week. Positive? Not really. I've been sleeping/laying down for like 12 hours a day. It's pathetic. I usually either run or go to the gym daily but I've stopped all of that for now. I have zero motivation to do much of anything, I am getting the dog out for a daily walk.
