Re: Ask a STM week of Oct. 22

  • One of my friends recently told me it’s common where she lives for OB to do circ. I thought the same thing - not really my OB’s expertise! I talked to mine about it and luckily my pedi does them. We’re team green so might be a non-issue but I didn’t even think about that with baby #1 (who is a girl, so moot).

  • My OB does circs. She performed DS1’s in the hospital. I don’t think it’s uncommon.
  • @conchispita I am the oldest and my parents did the gift for me when my brother came (a little people airplane when I was 2.5) and for my brother and I when my sister was born (the wizard of Oz on vhs). I remember the vhs was wrapped and they had it in the bassinet with the baby when they rolled her up to us. Lol  It definitely helped me at least! I was like aw sweet, thanks baby!  :D I plan to do it for DD when LO comes but not sure what gift yet.
  • As far as the milk storage bags- I actually preferred the Medela kind because they stood up. Whenever I laid them down to defrost or used the lansinoh lay-down ones I risked the bags leaking every so often no matter how much I swore that damn Ziploc was sealed tight when I put it in the freezer! I also preferred pumping into bottles so I could pour the exact amount I wanted into the bags to store (OCD tendencies?) And I hated the idea of "wasting" space/bags by freezing bags that were not at least close to full.
  • @okayestmom12 that is such a cute idea! Totally stealing. DD will LOVE doing that! We visited her newborn cousin recently and she helped me pick a balloon/flowers for her aunt and pacifiers that she gave to the baby  <3
  • Build a bear just launched a baby line and now I really wanna take DS to make his baby brother a little welcome home teddy! lol

  • Favorite bottle warmer? I used munchkin brand first time, it was fine but difficult to clean. Curious if anyone was more partial to a certain type.
FTM'S -FYI, bottle warmers are a top priority in my book(even for EBF babies), but wipe warmers and microwave sanitizers were wasted space and $$.
  • I was gifted a munkin bottle warmer and thought it was ok. Sometimes I felt it made the milk too hot. I usually just used a mug with heated water in it. My bottles fit in perfectly and the mug helped the water completely cover the milk in the bottle so if heated pretty well and was never too hot.
  • FTM question re: bottle warming.
How warm does the milk need to be when you reheat it? Body temp (doesn't feel hot or cold when you dip pinkie into it)? Warmer than body temp?
  • I used and liked the Dr. Brown bottle warmer.  BTW, lots of people sell bottle warmers on FB marketplace, this is perfectly acceptable to buy used.
  • I loved the playtex drop in bottles.  Also, regarding warming the milk/formula, I just ran it under hot water or put in a mug too.  I went for room temp milk and as DS got older I tried to do it even less warm to get him used to drinking colder beverages.

Same here. We used the drop in bottles for all of our boys and either a mug or bowl of warm water.
  • @lzzfrancisco - Team "Mug of hot water" over here.

@hannahbananas11 - That'll depend on the baby.  My daughter (formula fed) liked lukewarm.  My son (breastfed) liked body temp/ a little warmer.  I have friends whose kids liked room temp.

This! I was literally looking at facebook marketplace when I decided to ask everyone for reviews! I will most likely be getting two. One for my house, and one to lend to grandparents/caregivers once I return to work. I never really considered the mug and microwave... does the milk still get warmed up evenly?
  • @lzzfrancisco - I liked the "mug method" because it was enough to take the chill off.  And then, if I needed it warmer, if you leave it in the water, it would warm up more.  A bottle warmer is certainly quicker but I didn't want any more baby gadgets and crap than I needed - ha! ;)

  • @okayestmom12- Also team mug of hot water.  Was gifted a bottle warmer and never opened the box and returned it.
  • @hannahbananas11 if you can try to get baby used to room temp milk. The less you have to warm it the better so when baby is screaming for his/her milk it will be at the temp they are used to faster.
  • Helpful advice as always! Thanks!
  • Never used a bottle warmer - at daycare, they used one, though. Once I was giving bottles, they were formula and I just used room temp-ish water. I didn't want to have a kid who would only drink warm/hot/cold, so I never kept it consistent.

  • @hannahbananas11 my daughter was used to body temp breast milk, so with a bottle we tried to match. Eventually she got to the point where she didn't care and it was usually room temp because she would get distracted and take a while to finish the bottle.
  • I would stay away from microwaves, re: hotspots.. Assume the bottle in mug is just sitting it in hot/warm water on the counter to warm?
  • @cass06_07 correct! I used a Pyrex measuring glass the handful of times I needed to.

  • @cass06_07- Yup, hot water in big mug, insert bottle... we basically just were taking the edge off if it was refrigerated bm. when my kid was doing formula, we used warm tap water.
