@naybinky9 I second anxiety, but when you go in for an ultrasound talk to your OB about testing your thyroid. I know when my levels are very wrong, it feels like a huge lump in my throat. I also get "froggy" voice that goes temporarily hoarse. Hope it resolves!
@wearegroot, plain water has been making my stomach turn lately also. We usually drink seltzer here too, but with the bloat I already have going on, it's been unappealing as well. My doctor kept reminding me to stay hydrated, and I know I need to, but it's been a struggle!
Someone talk me off a ledge. I woke up today and my breasts aren't tender anymore. I'm almost 7 weeks, Pgal anxiety is killing me. It's totally normal right?

@booksandlace definitely normal! Symptoms come and go. They may be back in a couple days, it may never come back, but it’s not a sign anything’s wrong Try and stay positive (easier said than done, I realize)
So this is weird, I think anyway... Has anybody else lost weight so far that hasn't been throwing up? I randomly got on the scale this week to see if I had gained and it was a couple of pounds lower than I expected to see, then I hopped on again today and it was a couple of pounds lower than that. I didn't gain during the first trimester last time, but it seems odd to be losing weight when I haven't thrown up once, and I'm a little concerned that it might indicate that I need to up my nutrient intake. I'm not overweight at all but I'm not rail thin, so I'm still at a normal BMI with or without the few pounds, but since I'm still breastfeeding my son I guess I need to make sure I'm eating enough to sustain him, me, and the new baby because I have to assume weight loss is not great.
I'll agree regarding water to a certain degree - it has to be very cold, but when it's freezing it definitely does the trick for me. I've always preferred it cold but it seems exacerbated now. Unfortunately, SIL has been staying here for a week and a half and she thinks she is helping by filling the Brita every time she uses it, so I haven't had a single glass of cold water and I'm about to kill her over nothing because I am moody AF
@piccola1988 yes - I keep going down a couple and then I will pop back up a few days later. My appetite hasn't been great so I assume that's why for me (plus cutting out booze).
@wearegroot@mrstmoose@florallimeade thanks for all the advice and support!! I think I’ll probably break the news today... I’ve been consistently late these past few days since the mornings are really difficult for me so I feel like a convo is needed... hope all of your job situations work out well!!
@Piccola1988, I lost ten pounds in the first trimester when I was pregnant with my son; never actually threw up, just nauseated all the time and wasn't working out as heavily so lost some muscle mass too. My doctor wasn't concerned as long as baby was growing and I started putting weight on in second trimester. I actually read something that said it's normal not to gain weight in the first tri, and then gain about 10-15 pounds each in second and third (I believe).
I'm thinking I'll lose some weight this time around too at first. I'm struggling to eat enough calories throughout the day with my constant nausea. It sucks.
@kangstadt good to know, thanks! Definitely knew not gaining in the first trimester was normal (I didn't last time, then I gained probably close to a pound a week in 2 & 3), but couldn't imagine losing weight being a great sign. I guess I will just keep an eye on it, maybe talk to my doctor next week, and try to remember it's probably not something to fester and worry over!
@Piccola1988 I’m not losing weight as fast as you but still BF here too and def have been losing weight over the past month. I’m attributing it to making healthier choices and diverting nutrients to baby 2.
@naybinky9 this PROBABLY isn't it, but you should ask your doctor to check. A lot of times thyroids can grow / act up during pregnancy because of all the hormones. During my first pregnancy I ended up getting a large thyroid nodule, which I had to get biopsied and checked regularly (still do, every 2 years now). What you're describing sounds like it could be a thyroid nodule. When they get big enough they can interfere with swallowing.
The pregnancy dreams are crazy this week. I had one last night that was definitely triggered by watching the Sopranos before bed. Let's just say it involved a lot of people getting gunned down. It was so vivid and frightening I woke up in a panic and my heart was racing a mile a minute. Ugh. I definitely did not experience this my last two pregnancies.

@naybinky9 I agree with it probably being anxiety. When I have anxiety/panic attacks it fells like a lump in my throat and I think I can’t breathe or swallow(I actually can it’s just the senstation.) Laying down and focusing on your breathing helps. For me colder air helps a lot, so going inside air conditioning or turning on a fan, or if your lucky and work has a giant walk in cooler that’s the best
I’ve also found listening to guided meditation helps relax me at night when it’s usually the worst I’ve had thyroid issues too, if you can actually feel a lump at the outside of your throat that’s definitely something to get checked out. Bring it up at your next appointment but if it’s affecting your daily routine I’d call your doctor right away to talk about it. Good Luck!
So I may have figured out part of the reason I’ve been having such a hard time sleeping. Apparently the crystal light packets my husband bought (that I’ve been downing like a mad woman because I don’t want plain water) have added caffeine. I don’t drink coffee or tea, and very rarely drink soda, so I was going from almost no caffeine a day to several caffeinated drinks a day.
And of course now I’m googling the effects of caffeine on early pregnancy, because I can’t leave well enough alone.
@wearegroot caffeine is fine during pregnancy. Your doctor will usually recommend fewer than 3 cups of coffee a day (crystal light probably has much less caffeine than coffee). But experiments in mice show that you would need to drink an insane amount of coffee (something like 100 cups in a day) to cause miscarriage. I highly recommend reading Expecting Better if you want an evidence-based take!
@wearegroot - I believe you can have up to 200mcg of caffeine per day. That's like 4 cans of soda. During my first pregnancy my daughter was diagnosed with a heart condition (electrical pathways, not the structure of her heart) and I was so worried that my one can of soda a day caused it. I was reassured that this was something that just happened and drinking caffeine daily would not have caused a heart condition. If that gives you any peace at all.
Thanks. I know everything is probably fine, but now I’m going to pay more attention to what I’m putting in my body. During my last pregnancy I had heart palpitations and rapid heartbeat that wouldn’t come down once. Apparently it was just a freak thing and thankfully didn’t happen again, but when I called the office I don’t think the nurse believed me when I said I don’t drink caffeine.
I am also turned off by water this pregnancy, which is something completely new to me. I've had to force myself to drink it- and I'm not drinking nearly as much as before I got pregnant. La Croix has helped, as the carbonation seems to settle my stomach; I know not everyone likes the taste, though.
@wearegroot that could definitely be the reason you are having a hard time sleeping but don't fret about the caffiene amount. I have my morning cup of coffee still daily and I also have a sparkling water with 48mg caffienne when I get home from work. Recommended amount is 200mg or less but I wouldn't think that those Crystal Light packets have that much in them
@wearegroot don’t you hate when nurses don’t believe you. I can’t tell you how many side eyes and “sures” I get when asked how much alcohol I drink a week, and I answer “Maybe one drink a month”. I have nothing against it I just suffer from migraines and even one glass of wine can trigger one. So I’d rather drink something else than suffer. Also I know a lot of people who can’t have caffine after 3pm without it affecting their sleep. So maybe try not to have any in the evening.
I thought I was better the past few days and then the nausea hit bad today. I only feel halfway better if I’m laying down. I’m basically just eating to survive because nothing makes it feel better. And I feel like a horrible mom for not wanting to play with the kiddos and basically having Disney Junior on all day. Is the Unisom everyone’s talking about over the counter or prescription. Taking new medicine triggers anxiety for me because I had a terrible allergic reaction during my first pregnancy. But if I need to take something for relief I will.
@BarefootContessa Yes, La Croix has been magic this pregnancy! The Lime is the only thing I can stomach most mornings, it's definitely saving me! I'm usually drinking 3 cans a day, a somewhat expensive habit, lol
Yesterday I was cleaning my fridge and every time I bent over to grab something, I gagged. Mind you, I’m no longer nauseous. I just gag! I gag after sneezing, coughing, laughing, eating, drinking, and smiling. It’s so bizarre.
Edited to add: this is super off topic, but sometimes I feel badly for not responding to y’all! I will seriously go through every single new post, go to reply to them and then lose energy/forget what I was going to say/etc. I’m just going to start aggressively clicking “love it” on everyone’s posts from now on. (The pre baby guilt is real and this is just one of the many things I’ve felt bad about today!!)
@jmesue1030 yes! The burping is so annoying, especially since I didn’t burp much before. I guess it could be worse though - I only burp when I start to get nauseous, and then the nausea goes away after I burp.
@jmesue1030@sdelg09 omg the burping. I had to mask burping a few times while I was lecturing today. SO AWKWARD. It didn’t occur to me that it was a pregnancy thing until right now though. Duh. It’s not like I would normally burp all the time!
@professormama@sdelg09 I wasn’t sure it was pregnancy related either but It’s definitely not normal so I’m assuming it is? It does make me feel better but it’s also gross and embarrassing haha
All day I've felt like there is a lump in my throat and I am fighting to breath normally. Help
Sounds like anxiety. Find a breathing app (I use my fit bit) it can help to focus only on breathing for a little while. The lump feeling might also be hormonal and a good cry might help. I suggest the opening to the movie UP. Always triggers a cry for me.
Oh man, we watched up yesterday. I cried like a baby throughout that opening scene
Exhaustion, sore boobs, headaches, nausea/vomiting, insomnia, the whole nine. Oh and pregnancy brain is legit. I had to tell work this week because it’s already obvious I’m pregnant. This is my 4th and this belly is already making its appearance. While it may be bloat, there’s a pooch there that wasn’t a month ago.
I have a new aversion to food in general. Lemonade it the only thing that remotely sounds in anyway desirable.
And i already had someone tell me it's probably a boy based on the fact that the only thing i want right now is sour. Also that's how i found out that DH told 2 of his coworkers.

For some reason that made me laugh probably more than is reasonable!
This might be off topic, but can anyone recommend a safe way to clean the litterbox of indoor/outdoor cats? I have a farm/pet sitting job next month and will need to clean a litterbox. I was thinking of wearing a face mask and gloves. I have cleaned up outdoor cat poop many times and so may have been exposed to toxoplasmosis before, not sure exactly how it works though.
